Terrific safe heater with no fumes

Electric Garage HeaterStep 1: I wanted to work comfortably in a 22 x 22 (9 foot ceiling) garage in the winter. Figuring I'd need lots of heat, I bought a portable 40,000 btu propane heater. It exhausts lots of carbon monoxide, so you have to partially open a door or window to the outside to let [cold] fresh air in -- which seriously lowers heater efficiency. The heater warmed the garage, but the approach wasn't satisfactory -- i.e., the fumes were so bad, I stopped using it. It was also very loud, like the hissing of escaping air from a large air boat; plus, when the propane tank ran out, the heater stopped; each time you needed heat, you had to drag it out, connect it to the tank, leave plenty of floor space around this self-contained-blowtorch; put it all away when you were done; and of course find a place to store it. Also, there was no thermostat. All in all, a royal pain in the keister.Step 2: I bought one of these electric heaters. It has only half the btu's of the propane unit, but there is no need to open a window or door for ventilation. It also has a thermostat, so you can set it (to a number, not a temperature), and come back 30 minutes later and be in relative comfort. On days in the low 30s, it will keep the garage in the 60s, which is fine for working.. (My attached garage ceiling and 2 walls are insulated.) My heater is mounted high up on a wall, but it can also be mounted to hang from the ceiling, as long as the clearances laid out in the instructions, are followed. In any case, once mounted, it is out of the way, and always ready. There's nothing to haul out or set up when you need heat -- just turn it on. When done, just turn it off. This heater needs a dedicated 30-amp 220-volt circuit. You wouldn't want to use this every day, due to electricity costs, but for occasional use, it is perfect.My advice is to skip step 1.Note: This heater is also sold under the Dayton name, as the G73 Electric Garage Heater.

Good heater, quirky thermostat

I received this heater as a Christmas present and promptly installed it in my 4 car garage. I live in Chicago, and during this time of year (early January) the outside temperature is ~5-10 degrees when I leave for work. My garage is insulated, located under the first floor of the house, and has an insulated and sealed door. Without heat, the garage will stay around 40 degrees in this weather.I connected the heater to a programmable switch that turns the heater on so the garage is warm when my wife and I wake up and leave for work, turns it off while we're out of the house, then turns it back on before we arrive home. It has been my experience that this heater is capable of raising the temperature in my garage (700 square feet, 8' ceilings) ~12-15 degrees per hour in this weather, which is perfectly acceptable. I'll admit I expected a bit better performance after reading other reviews, but this is still good.To install the heater, I did the following: Added a 30 amp circuit breaker, ran 10 AWG wire to the switch (Intermatic Hot Water, Dpst Electronic Timer, 7 Day), then ran 10 AWG wire from the switch to a NEMA 10-30R receptacle (Leviton 800-05207-00K Dryer Receptacle 30 Amp 125/250V Flush Mount Black). Output at the receptacle measures 256 volts. Finally, I attached a 10/3 dryer cord (Coleman Cable 09125 5-Feet Dryer Cord, Grey) to the heater to connect it to the receptacle. This allows me to repurpose the line for other tools.The one complaint I have is that the thermostat is not performing consistently throughout the day. I am not sure why. Without touching the dial, the heater will shut down ~6-7 degrees cooler in the morning than it will in the evening. When I left for work this morning, the garage temperature was 53 degrees, but I am sure that when I arrive home, the temperature will be 59-60 degrees. It has been working this way since I first installed it.

Excellent heater!

I bought this heater for my 23x44 garage, but had my professional electrician run the wire and install. It brought the temp up from 45 to 80 in a matter of just a couple of hours! I keep it on the lowest setting, and it stays in the mid-60s (depending on outside temp). I'm in the suburbs of Chicago, and it kept the entire garage comfortable all winter.I don't have a single complaint.
