4You may want to know more than what the manual tells you...
By A Customer
I really like the TV. I like the way the picture looks, considering that I spent $1500, and not $5000. I've had my TV a few days, so I can't tell you how it holds up over time (I'll be back). This review is a "tell you what you may want to know from day one" as much as it is a review. I hope I can help prevent you from damaging your projection TV by telling things not mentioned in the manual.

An earlier review (different website) gave the TV one star out of five because he said after eight months he had side bars permanently burned into his screen, and he felt the manual's "don't use 4:3 mode more than 15% of the time" wasn't enough information. Keeping this in mind, I never use 4:3 with gray side bars (I can live with the "Just" stretch.)

The manual says nothing about a break in period (it didn't say "this TV has new technology and doesn't need a "break-in" either). I've read several internet articles that recommend special treatment the first 100 hours--have the contrast turned down. This TV doesn't list "contrast" but I'm assuming "picture" is the same thing. One said 250 hours (most said one hundred). Everyone said turn down the contrast (or in our case, I think `picture'). One said to turn down other things (well, you need some brightness, or else no light gets to the screen and that can't be a good break-in either J. Several articles on projection TVs said "Wow, after the breakin the picture became really great!" My second day I thought it was looking better than the first. One site said "don't just turn on your TV for 100 hours and say `I'm done!'", that the turning the TV on and turning it off (so that the components warm up, then cool down, etc.) was a part of the conditioning.

As delivered, the TV setting was on "vivid" which has the highest picture. I turned that all the way down. I hooked a computer LCD monitor up to my DVD player through an S-video, and ran component cables (red, green, blue) from the DVD player into the TV so I could compare the pictures. The TV seemed to error on too much red (people skin color), so I changed color temperature to cool, and there was too much color, so I turned down the tint. This gave people a more natural looking skin color. This isn't a criticism of this particular model--one website named three TV brands and said they all give you a TV with the contrast (or picture) turned high and probably too much red. For comic relief, one guy mentioned that the stores put the most expensive TV's in a category on "vivid" so they look better than the less expensive TVs.

One site said that the large the projection TV, the more likelihood of problems like burn in . I'm paranoid about the TV logos in the lower right corner if the logo is solid white (I sent ABC an email pleading with them to change to something half transparent so the colors underneath come through.) News channels with a running ticker at the bottom of the screen-never!

Right now while I'm breaking the TV, I'm not playing any cartoons. My understanding of the break in is to run the circuitry without a heavy load on the lamps (like driving your new car 50 miles an hour on the highway). To me, the cartoons are very very colorful, equivalent to playing a normal movie on vivid. Wouldn't that defeat the purpose of the break-in? I hope to find something about this on the internet.

Biggest complaint- I've already seen with two of my widescreen DVDs that they don't quite fill the screen from top to bottom (slight slivers of blackness at top and bottom) and none of the zoom modes will fix this. Those DVD's are now banned from the TV(I'll play them on my computer). One review site said the problem was that this TV only has four Zoom options, and other TVs have more. Maybe later I'll get a new DVD player that can send out a signal with various zooms and then I would just put the TV on standard aspect (no zooming) to accept it. Perhaps this is my biggest complaint against the TV, that the basic "zoom" can't make it zoom all the way in each direction. From reading the manual, I would have thought it would zoom completely.

TV gets 4 of 5 stars for excellent price to performance ratio. I wanted to give 5, but if all this stuff I found on the internet is true, then when I bought the TV, I could have read the manual, turned it on, and misused/abused it during the first few weeks of use. I don't know how much new lamps cost, or what I would pay for the labor. The guy with the problem of the burned in side bars said that one would cost $500 total (parts and labor).

5Gorgeous image
By E. Cove
Since I just got this, I can't comment on its reliability, but mine looks and works great. First off, the PT-53WX53 seems to be pretty lightweight - relatively speaking - compared to other 53" HDTV's. The image was pretty good right out of the box. It has some brightness presets, and mine was set to "Vivid" which is probably too bright for most situations. I changed that, and also brought down the color saturation. Once I did all this, the image looked very good. All I have right now is analog cable, which looks grainy on many channels. But DVD's are crystal-clear: sharp, gorgeous color and contrast. I did a little homework, and a couple of other RPTV brands (Hitachi and Mitsubishi) consistently came up as having superior images, but I think the differences are negligible - only hardcore videophiles could have a problem with the PT-53WX53's image. I highly recommend this television.

Added: I've since upgraded to digital cable with HD. The regular digital cable images are fine. But HD on this set is fantastic! Crystal-clear, great definition and color. I'm very satisfied with this set.

5Big Clear Picture--Small(ish) Price
By A Customer
I've had my Panasonic PT-53WX53 for about two weeks. The unit's picture quality is excellent, and the sound is decent even using only the built-in speakers. For optimum picture quality, you'll likely need some set-up. Fortunately, the cable guy who installed my HD box loves his work, and spent about 30-45 minutes tinkering with various controls. When he was done, I was left with a sparkling, amazingly clear picture. The one drawback: once you've seen HD, you can't go back.

This unit is an excellent value. Why spend several times more for a plasma, unless you *really* need that extra 21 inches of space (this unit is about 25 inches deep, versus 4 or so for a plasma).

5Lego's 2003 Cargo Train
By R. Ferguson
Lego delisted this set years ago. This set is from the discontinued 9 volt series which used electrified track. As of 2010, Lego has switched to Power Function trains which employ infrared remote control and battery-powered motors. The newer trains use the same gauge track as the earlier 9 volt series, but the new track lacks the metal conductor. Furthermore, the old 9 volt motors and track have become very rare and are increasingly of interest primarily to collectors. This set is modeled in the style of a small European cargo train. The set has fantastic playability. It includes an engine (similar to a Deutsche Bahn class 290) , a flat car (with three pallets), a box car, a hopper, forklift, and three mini-figures. The set includes one sets of points (switches), sixteen pieces of curved track and two pieces of straight track. Even though this set has been superseded by a newer cargo trains, it is still a fine set.

5great wok
By J. York
My wife and I love this Mauviel wok. Of all of our Mauviel cookware, this one gets used most frequently as the wok is such a flexible cooking device. The copper construction allows for very even heating which makes cooking a joy. The bronze handles are fairly lightweight (compared to the cast iron handles on our other Mauviel) which makes this wok maneuverable. The small flat bottom is perfect for holding the wok upright when our hands need a rest. And the second "helper handle" opposite the main handle is perfect for any extra positioning you need to do.So far we are very pleased with all of our Mauviel purchases and expect a lifetime of use from them.

5simply the best
By Dr. Know
The most beautiful jam pan you can get.It is hammered,so you will not seeany single scratch or dent on it which is a usual problem with coppercookware.I have bought mine one year ago and am very happy with it.The color of the jam made in copper pan is much nicer than the SS and the pan is made from 1.2 mm-gauge copper and is much thicker than leight weight jam pansfrom matfer or m passion mauviel. You can also use this beauty as beverage / ice bucklet in the parties or as magazine rack .I suggest to use only silicone spatula/spoonula and use silicone/wooden ladle to avoid scratches since the bottom is not hammered.I would also suggest to buy a smaller size to have a better heat controland also be very careful with the brass handles.they get very hot.Washit after the use,dry it with paper towel and put it on the still hot stoveto get ride of last drops of water in rivets and rolled rims.

5useful copper skillet
By A Customer
From Mrs. CyberDad:This item was a gift during the winter holiday season, so this review covers several months of use, on a gas stove in a home kitchen.First, this is a heavy skillet, so don't expect to do any light-hearted tossing of ingredients. Heat control, as expected in copper, is excellent. If you are browning onions, for example, you can shut down the heat precisely when you want them to stop browning. There is no "retained heat" to continue the cooking process.Second, this is not a skillet for the dishwasher. However, it cools so quickly after cooking that it can be hand-washed almost immediately. (The handle retains heat longer than the pan--and you will need to use a potholder.) A quick swish with a sponge and soapy water, rinsing and towel-drying, and the pan is ready to use again. Because of the quick cool-down time, there is very little trouble with burned-on food.Third, I haven't bothered to polish this pan, and I've enjoyed the brown coloration as it ages. I expect I'll polish it if/when something needs to be scrubbed off, just as I do with my other cookware. This is a nice addition to a family kitchen, in the size I happen to use most often.

5Awesome Splurge
By RMG
Dropped the $200 on this pan and I am not disappointed at all. You really have to be into cooking to appreciate what it is (you know who you are) but once you get it and use it you are so happy you bought it.I use this pan for lot's of things and the one thing in commmon is that everything turns out just great. Crank up the heat, instant respone. Turn down the heat, instant response. It's an amazing metal copper, and really the best for cooking. I wish I had the guts to buy all the pans I need from Mauviel but for now this is my one little indulgence. All of my All Clad is still secure in that it won't be replaced by this stuff anytime soon. But who knows, one day maybe.....

5Excellent!!!
By Jennifer Vandivort
I purchased this to be used exclusively as an omlet pan. It is a bit heavy, but perfectly balanced. The copper conducts heat evenly up through the sides of the pan. Not only is it perfectly functional it is beautiful hanging on my pot rack. I chose this brand because I refuse to cook on tin or aluminum and this is stainless steel lined. PERFECT!!!! I am looking to add more Mauviel products to collection.

5My current favorite binoculars
By A photographer
I've had these binoculars for over one year. I use them mainly for birding. My previous binoculars were my almost 25 year old Leitz Trinovid 10x40's. The Trinovids were excellent binoculars in their day but they are definitely getting long in the tooth. I'll keep them because, let's face it, I'll never be able to afford the current Leica binoculars.I tried several brands before settling on the Swift Audubon roof prisms. What I found was that some binoculars excel in some areas but fall short in others. Of those I tried, the Audubons were the most comfortable to use with good depth of field, brightness and sharpness. Oddly, the Audubons do not really seem to excel in any area--they simply provide a combination of attributes that make them pleasant to use.I give these binoculars my highest recommendation. Unfortunately, the only way to tell if a binocular fits your vision and handling characteristics is to try them. That's impossible when ordering online so be sure to order from a place like Amazon--a place that will take them back if they don't work for you.

5Fine optics at an affordable price
By Dr. DH Bennett
The Swift 8.5 x 44 HHS Audobons are fine birding binoculars at an affordable price. They offer a clear, sharp image without going to the price extremes of the three big brands. They are easy to use, although the focus wheel could be larger for easier use. The rubber armoring gives them a solid feel in the hand without being excessively heavy. The 8.5 magnification is just right for birding. It is not so big that it becomes hard to hold the image steady as is the case with 10s for me. The 44 front optic allows a great field of vision and plenty of light for dawn and dusk birding. They are also nitrogen purged. I am delighted with them. They were reviewed by Better View Desired, which is where I learned about them.

5Swift Audubon HHS exceedingly clear image
By Vicki D. Dern
I did some research and ordered three top-rated binoculars, 8 x 42, in the $300 range. Spent an hour or so outdoors with all three pairs. The Swift Audubon HHS had much crisper and brighter image than either the Nikon Monarch or the Eagle Optics Ranger 8 x 42. As with all things, there are some trade-offs. The Nikon and Eagle models were a few ounces lighter, enough to make a difference in comfort. Both models also have a much closer focus. The Audubon only focusses down to about 9 ft. I really wanted to like the Nikon better because of the weight and the close focus, but in the end the image was so superior in the Audubon HHS that was the choice I made. They're actually 8.5 x 44 and that small increase in magnification does make a difference. I'd been using 10 x 50's and loved the larger image but found them difficult for tracking birds because of the constant need for fine-tuning the focus.
