5How do they make something so good, so tiny?!?!
By Mr. P. R. Allen
Let's start with the downsides:-

1. Battery life is about 6 hours, so make sure you bring a few spares on long hauls.

2. Doesn't float. Not a nig negative for me, but may be for you.

3. That's it. Yes, it has no maps, but it doesn't need them - this ain't aimed at those users. You may as well say it has no marine or flight addons.....same thing - it's aimed at hikers/runners/cyclists/hobbyists.

Upsides? Lots!

1. Size - It is TINY. It's smaller and lighter than my mobile phone.

2. Waterproof. Tested it, true, it is. Water got into the batter compartment, and it didn't affect operation. Weird.

3. Trackpoints - 10000. Yes, Ten thousand.

4. Although its a budget model, it doesn't scrimp on other basic features - 20 route or 125 legs, 10 saved tracks, 500 waypoints, its plenty for anyone.

5. WAAS. Not used in the UK yet, but next year.

6. PC Connectivity - allows me to use my Ozi Explorer to upload/download pretty much everything.

7. Ease of use.... I was up and running in literally no time.

8. Speed - acquired satellites pretty damned quickly.

9. Feel - Feels damned good in the hand - buttons/screen well placed, feel good. Some have mentioned an on button problem, I don't see it myself.

10. Trip Computer - nice for runners/cyclists. Lots of configuration available to the user too.

11. Colour - you ain't gonna lose this gadget in a hurry....

12. Price - At £120 including VAT (UK) it's pretty amazing value.

Summary - for a hiker etc, it does the job extremely well, especially if you use it with a PC. As far as I'm concerned, there are no decent competitors on the market - all others fall short in some way.

10/10. Easily.

4Just a Toy? No way!
By A Customer
Intrigued by Garmin's Geko 201 Personal Navigator®? It's smaller than an eTrex and dwarfed by many standard GPS units. But is the Geko a real GPS or just a toy?

First, the Geko 201 is a serious GPS receiver. It features WAAS differential correction; memory for 500 waypoints, twenty routes, a whopping 10,000 track points and ten saved tracks; and it connects to external power or to your PC for data transfer with an optional cable. It floats. The array of five buttons is easy to use. The screen is tiny, but it's not that hard to read. Menu choices allow configuration of the data screens to your liking. The back is rubberized, so you can lay it on your dashboard (where it works quite well) and not have it slide around. Using only two AAA batteries, the unit is light as well as small enough to fit in a shirt pocket (but the limited power supply may be an issue for some as explained below). The Geko also has four built-in arcade games, a novelty to emphasize that GPS can be fun.

The Geko doesn't show base maps but is adept at recording points and lines (keeping track of where you've been, locations you want to remember and where you'd like to go). If you want a GPS unit to use primarily for hiking or recording locations, the absence of base maps isn't that significant. Fact is that the base maps in many GPS units don't provide enough detail to be of much use at a close-in scale unless you can download more features from a CD. If you need map detail, a Geko easily connects to a PDA or laptop computer to display your location in navigation programs or even projected on aerial photos.

The Geko utilizes a built-in "patch" antenna (a square plate inside the unit, located under the lizard logo). I found the antenna remarkably sensitive when the unit is held correctly. It works best in a horizontal orientation, the top edge of the unit pointed to the horizon. That way the antenna can look up to the sky. Hang it around your neck on a lanyard, though, and the reception will drop. (Note: Unlike receivers with a patch antenna, GPS units like the Garmin 72 and 76 series using a quadrifilar helix antenna should be operated with the top edge pointed skyward.)

As an experiment, I took both a big Garmin GPSMAP 76S and the Geko 201 on a hike through a forest area. I wanted to see if the Geko could perform as well and hold a track in a wooded situation. After the hike I downloaded the data with a freeware mapping program (USAPhotoMaps) to overlay the GPS tracks on a TerraServer aerial photo. That's the best way to visualize where you've been. To my surprise the tracks and waypoints recorded by the two units were nearly identical. The Geko had no problem holding a signal in the test, even while I walked through a crowded pine plantation.

On the downside, Geko's rather feeble power supply - two AAA batteries - disappoints me. Garmin claims that two AAA alkaline batteries can last up to twelve hours (on battery saver mode). For economy, however, I use NiMH rechargeable batteries. I know that NiMH power cells don't last as long as alkaline, but the duration was far shorter than I expected - only 40 minutes set on standard mode in 32° F March weather. At 60° F (~16° C) the Geko ran just two hours on fresh NiMH batteries. It operated five and a half hours in battery saver mode with NiMH batteries on the warm dashboard of my car. It's also peculiar that the Geko manual extols lithium batteries for cold weather use and long life when nobody manufactures AAA lithium batteries. Only AA-cell batteries from Energizer are available in a lithium formulation. They can operate to -40°F and last four times longer than alkaline batteries, but sadly do not fit a Geko.

Although you may rely on a more complex GPS for serious tasks, having a miniature Geko tucked in your pocket or bag could be handy. If you toss the Geko to your kids in the back seat to play arcade games en route to your destination, however, the batteries could be dead by the time you arrive. You might prefer a recreational GPS unit using AA batteries for extended outdoor activities, but a Geko is a good buy for educational, casual or backup use.

5Excellent (and tiny) GPS
By eyecore
This little GPS, while not having any removeable memory nor a large bank of memory, does VERY well with what it does have. It easily stored a 6 hour hike in it's memory, with less than half the memory used. For street mapping, it has a connection for a computer -- And coupled with Delorme Street Atlas USA, is a high-end solution for in car navigation. (Requires the cables and a serial/USB converter, which are reasonably priced and excellently assembled at the pfranc project.) The eTrex cable/converter is the same for this Geko.

The battery life isn't really a negative -- ten to twelve hours of operation is just fine, and you can replace low batteries without losing information, so nothing is hurting there. Overall, the price for this unit makes this unit an excellent purchase. Only complaint is that the color is a bit ugly -- And the stretch holster offered by Garmin doesn't do anything for its appearance either.

5Nothing but pleased
By A Customer
I recieved my Geko 101 about two weeks ago, and so far I am very pleased. You can't expect extrordiany things from [an inexpensive] unit, but if you don't want to spend alot, you're not missing much. For the light camper, it's perfect. You can pay ... more to get the Geko 201 with WAAS, which makes it accurate to 10 feet. Or you can skip the WAAS and get this, which is acurate to 50 feet. However, in my experiances, usually this unit is accurate between 25 and 12 feet. An extra 15 ft. so what!

Geko 101:

Pros-1. Small! It's about the size of a cell phone

2. Lightweight. Because it's so small, it should be obvious that it's very light.

3. Accurate. Even though it doesn't have WASS capabilities it is just as accurate at times.

4. Waterproof. You never know when you might need it.

5. Features. It has just about everything you need or want (minus a detailed map) including when you'll arrive at your destination, speed, elevation, and all different units of measure.

6. Ease of use. The five button configuration makes it easy to use. Let's face it, if you find it difficult,[you shouldn't].

Cons-

1. It's not the greatest GPS ever made, but what do you expect for [the money]?

2. Batteries. This unit takes 2 AAA's. Although life is not a problem (12hrs.) unless you own something else that takes AAA batteries, sometimes they can be a pain.

3. PC compatibility. There's no way to link the Geko 101 to your PC. Oh well, even if you could, it would be $...more for the software.

4Ok for GeoCaching, good portability but poor battery life
By David Michmerhuizen
I have this exact unit and have been using for GeoCaching for about 6 months. The guts of the unit are pretty much the same as the more expensive ones - you'll know where you are just fine. Much of the user interface is the same as the more expensive models.

The main pro for this unit (other than price) is size - it's smaller than the next products up the line and easier to just stick in your pocket.

The main con is battery life. The amount of time you get out of 2 AAAs is not so hot. You'll eat up a pair of batteries every time you go out. I counter this by only turning the unit on to get my bearings. With a device that uses AA batteries I would be able to leave it on and use the tracklog/backtrack features. I think about it...

Some other factors to consider;

Display - once you go up above the basic etrex yellow unit the garmin units have higher-res displays, which are nice.

Connectivity - you can do ok without it, but this model is the only one that does not allow waypoint download (not sure about the 201.) Experienced geocachers favor the higher-end models with more memory. They load large numbers of cache waypoints into memory and are ready to go no matter where they are in their home area. If you're a more casual hiker/cacher, then the cheaper models do just as good a job - even this one.

Mapping - the gekkos and the etrex yellow will show you where your waypoints are in relation to each other, but don't show any other features. The more expensive models can do natural features and even uploaded topo maps.

You can GeoCache with almost any GPS. The Etrex yellow is the standard, but this has served me well. Happy Caching!

4Excelent for Geocaching
By FOX
First off, after reading reviews here about low battery life, I have used this unit now for three days of geocaching, doing 3 or 4 geocaches per day, PLUS all the time to learn the unit, program in coordinates from home, etc. I am STILL on the first set of batteries, and still have 2 out of 4 on the battery meter. But then again, I use alkaline batteries, not the rechargable gimicks that only have 1.2 volts per cell rather than 1.5 of a REAL battery, and never last long in any device.ALSO... there is a BATTERY SAVE feature in the menu that you can select, that I guess the others never bothered to find or read the manual about. This turns the receiver part on and off that is not noticeable to you at all, and I recommend leaving it on, unless you are trying to get accurate to one foot, which might be harder to do with the battery save feature on.I leave the battery save feature on until about 50 feet from the cache, then turn it off so I can zero in to the exact foot of the cache. That's right. I am able to go in and narrow to the exact foot of the cache. What you have to do, is when you get around 15 feet, start walking REAL SLOW! Because if you keep walking fast, you will pass it as the counter keeps going if you are walking fast.If you pass it, just keep walking about 15 feet, turn around and try comming back REAL SLOW, following the arrow step by step, and you should have no problem getting right to the exact coordinates. I sure don't have any problem doing so.Walk slow so you can see the distance go down one foot at a time, until you are at ZERO. Many caches I have found were exactly at the location the Geko 101 led me to. There were a few caches that were 10 feet off, but that was the fault of the people who hid the cache that didn't get the exact coordinates right with their GPS units. This unit led me to the left side of a real small bridge about a foot away from the edge, and when I went under the bridge, the cache was in that EXACT spot under where I was standing on the bridge when I got to zero on the Geko. The coordinates are only as good as the people and thier GPS units that hide the caches. If they have an old GPS that isn't as accurate, or don't measure the exact location accurately, and YOU use the best, most expensive and accurate GPS unit available, you are NOT going to get right to the cache, because the hider made a mistake in plotting the cache coordinates!I have been waiting for YEARS for GPS units to come down in price, and wanted one with street maps, but they just will not come down in price. And on Ebay, you only find used ones that actually end up selling for MORE than I can buy one on Amazon!Auctions are nothing more than contests where participants compete to see who can pay the MOST for something. Finally got this as a gift, tested it out with Geocaching, and it is more than perfect for the job. And you don't really need streets and maps in parks and woods, as they don't show trails anyway, only streets. You make your OWN trail maps automatically with this unit as you walk around.I even use it while driving to find the Geocache sites, and even without roadmaps, you can figure it out just by folloing the big arrow, and watching the miles go down. It even has the ability to tell you exactly how many minutes you have left, or what your arrival time will be. Even when you are walking on trails. It is nice and small and perfect for Geocaching as not too many people will notice it. It is the exact size of a tiny cell phone, so you can quickly hold it to your head as if you are talking, and people will just think it is a phone. Only the top half is yellow, the other side is dark.NICE rubberized parts on the unit. I can just set the thing down on the dash of the car, and it does not slide around. Sure, I can't see the display with it flat on the dash, but it stays put, until after I make the complex turn or whatever, and then can pick it up again. There are optional mounts you can get for the car, but I like the one for bike handlebars. So many times I find neat secret areas on bike trails and have a hard time finding them again. Now I can just plot the locations, title them with an alphanumeric name, and next time, this unit will lead me right to my favorite spots on or off the bike trails, even letting me know how much farther I have to go in miles or minutes. When you get down to .1 mile, it jumps to around 500 feet and counts down the rest of the way in feet.Since I am still using the first set of batteries, and it looks like I still have a lot of use left out of them, I didn't get to test and see if indeed all the waypoints and info I saved into it will stay when replacing the batteries as the manual says it will do.The manual says, so long as you change the batteries right away, you will not lose any information you have stored in it.If after this set of batteries dies out, and I replace them and this is NOT the case, I will add to this review an update saying so.I have since seen this unit in another store, and noticed that the green Geko logo was not on the unit as it is on mine. Why would some units not have the Geko on it and others do?Glad mine has the Geko on it.----------------------------------UPDATE:Half way through geocaching yesterday, the battery went down to the last bar of 4 bars on the meter. The manual states that it will TELL you when you have only 10 minutes of power left, but I didn't want to have to change batteries in the middle of a long cache, so even though the batteries would have lasted who knows how much longer, I decided to change the batteries sooner than I may have had to.I took out the old batteries in the car, and put in the new set. Turned on the unit, and was pleasantly surprised to find that indeed, all my waypoints and other information was still in the unit, nothing was lost! This was my biggest fear, as I had spent a long time entering in a lot of cache locations into it.------------------------------------Another update:I accidentally forgot to turn the battery save function back on after finding a cache, and the batteries were being sucked very quickly! As soon as I noticed the battery meter going down fast, I double checked, and sure enough, I didn't have battery save on.The default on this unit is NORMAL, not BATTERY SAVE, and if you don't use battery save, this thing will probably eat a set of batteries in only an hour. You should leave the unit in BATTERY SAVE mode at all times, unless you are within 50 feet of a cache and need to narrow down closer. In battery save mode, I have no problem spending an entire two days, morning to dusk, finding geocaches, without having to change batteries.I may make a C or D cell battery pack for this unit so I can go even longer, there is no reason they had to make this with tiny AAA instead of AA batteries, except for the uneducated consumers that demand tiny and small devices all the time.I would have been happy if the unit was twice the size, if it meant longer battery life. But in a democracy, you always have three wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for lunch. In other words, mob rule.

5Best rear projection tv for the money!
By Roy Chan
Pros: Solid video processing with CineMotion 3:2 pull-down; 46-inch, 16:9, HDTV-capable rear-projector; 480p and 1080i display capability; 3D-YC comb filter; two-tuner picture-in-picture mode; relatively inexpensive.Cons: No independent input memory; tabletop design is an awkward, in-between height; nonremovable protective screen.

Summary: I have had this tv for almost 6 weeks and so far, I have never regretted buying it! The only regret is not buying it sooner! In fact, so impressed am I with the picture and the sound that I have already recommended it to a friend who is in the mkt for a new tv. After some research of his own and his own personally conducted "eye-ball" test, he came the same conclusion and purchased the set 1 wk after my recommendation. I believe the HD microfocus lens and picture tubes really work to produce a superb picture -- such that it's hard to believe that it's rear-projection and not the standart CRT which are purported to be clearer, but that in this case it's not! Also, the $3000CAD that we paid included the tv stand which makes it a great value when compared to other rptvs of this size. I watch only cable tv on this set and I am still amazed at the picture. I also watch DVDs on progressive scan and am very happy with the PERFECT picture -- which goes to show what it's capable of, given a superior signal. Overall, this a great widescreen TV.

5Simply Beautiful!!
By JC
We've had this TV for a few months now, and the picture still blows us away. There are only a handfull of High Definition channels right now, but watching an HDTV broadcast, makes this set worth every penny. Watching sporting events in HD is like having a seat inside the stadium / arena(This set is a football lover's dream. ESPN HD is the coolest!). We looked at a bunch of different models, including some of the bigger screens, but this one is just the perfect size for us, and the Sony was the most highly recommended by salespeople(they always noted how busy repair guys were with some of the other models). A good store will have HD pumped in on all their TVs to help with deciding which unit has the best picture. The Sony was sharp, the sound was good, and the remote was easy to learn. Also, watching DVDs with the progressive scan is like going to the movies. With the different audio and video setups, multiple inputs(including a convenient front input), and universal remote(included), you'll be very pleased with this set, whether you're watching the latest movie on DVD, catching the playoffs, or watching your favorite show in HD. This one is a good choice.

5best TV I ever had
By Robert J. Bachman
The Sony company should win an award for this HDTV it s the best picture I have ever seen. DVD's are super and HDTV for sports and PBS is fanstatic. BUY IT !!

The only downside was the wait for the stand, and the lack of space for components below.

5Free Software Makes the Labels Work
By Paul Moskowitz
Our town's energy committee recently had a project for which we needed about 250 peel-off labels. Our plan was to distribute 250 CFL (compact fluorescent) light bulbs free at our town's community day (sort of like a street fair) in order to encourage people to use the bulbs to reduce electricity use. CFL light bulbs can save about 75 percent on electricity over incandescent bulbs. For the 250 bulbs, we calculated that for 8000 hours of use and an electric cost of $0.10/KWh the total savings vs. 100 watt incandescent bulbs for all the bulbs would be about $15,000. There would also be a saving of 94 tons of carbon dioxide emission.Avery Address Labels were a good choice for adding a label indicating the savings for using the bulbs and our committee's name. The question was how to get the information printed on the labels. At the Avery web site, I found free software, DesignPro, which makes it possible to produce label designs for different label sizes. I downloaded the software easily and got started on the designFor the labels, there were about a dozen pre-made templates for the different size labels. I chose the template that matched my labels. Using DesignPro was a little like using PowerPoint. I was able to cut and paste a graphics image, add the appropriate text, and choose a font for the text. A test run on my printer produced a beautiful matrix of labels. The only problem was to find out which side of the label stock had to be up. I can never remember. After an up/down test, I had my sheets of labels printed in no time. Our community day give-away was a big success. Our free light bulbs lasted about four hours. We were able to peel the labels from the printed sheets easily. There was enough time to peel and apply the labels as we gave away the CFLs. One surprise is that we had to have a sales pitch even for give-aways. The other surprise was that many people had never seen CFLs before. I am now a big fan of Avery labels, but I recommend getting the free software to make them work.

4Great Sub
By A Customer
I bought this sub in order to add more bass to my home theater mini system, Panasonic Ak600, which I also recomend. I also bought Monster Cable 12 foot sub cable and used the line in and out from of the Sub and my system, thereby avoiding the speaker wire. The sound is crisp and clean. I tailored the high cut and volume settings to my liking, and I love the standby mode. I use it for TV, CDs and DVDs. I use an optical cable with my dvd player so i truly get the .1 in 5.1 It is definitely powerful and gives great bass on music and movies. I would definitely recomend this sub for the price.
