An awesome pot

I have used this pot almost every time I cook since I received it as a gift. The nonstick coating makes it perfect for sauteeing mirepoix to start soups or stews, and the shape of the pot makes it perfect for finishing them! Well made pan, glass lid makes it easy to see what I'm doing. After 4 years of fairly heavy use, the nonstick has started to scratch a bit, but just a little.

Finally, a non-stick pan that you'll keep for life.

I have consistently been disappointed by non-stick cookware. I wanted to buy a non-stick pan for day-to-day use that would stand up for years to come. It's been only a few weeks but I have a good feeling about the berndes.This Saute Pan is large enough to handle the biggest tasks, but adequate for smaller tasks as well (I regularly cook for only two). It distributes heat evenly and it appears to hold heat well. I was expecting the pan to be heavy, but it is very light and the extra handle allows for ease of movement when you have a great deal of food in the pan.And did I mention non-stick. It's as good or better than any non-stick pan I've ever used. And you get a feeling that it is non stick through and through. Plus the exterior is made of the same non-stick material so clean up is a piece of cake.It's more expensive than most non stick, teflon coated pans but it's solid. It may be cheaper than Calphalon, but I'm not impressed by Calphalon. It's not so non-stick and not as even a heater as everyone says. Maybe I've seen the wrong Calphalon, but you're probably wasting your money on it.Give Berndes Signocast a shot. The bigger the better. I only have one, but that's all you really need. This pan shares it's cooking duties with my Sitram Magnum Pro line, a Sitram Cybernox pan and a set of Le Creuset. I don't know if I'd buy an entire set of Berndes (I'm pretty old-school in most of my cookware choices) but give one a try - you won't be disappointed.UPDATE:After a year and a half it's still going strong. Even the sides (which scrape up against other pots, pans, & utensils) still appear perfect, in terms of the non-stick coating. I will never again buy a non-stick pan that isn't made by Berndes.

very nice

I love this pan. It is expensive but the best pan for me. It is quite large and the non-stick surface is so smooth, both inside and out, and no sign of wear after about a year of use so far. Very nicely made. A good investment.

I can't pan this pan

The Berndes Signocast products are excellent. They are strong and sturdy, but not as heavy as Le Creuset, they are very very easy to clean--a swipe or two in the dishwater and they are clean (use steel wool pads occasionally on their bottom aluminum cooking surface), their bottoms are flat unlike some stuff that warps leaving you wondering what is touching the electric element, and stuff in them cooks amazingly well. I'm gradually replacing everything else I've bought with these. These are a bit expensive, but they hold up, and good tools are important to the home chef and are well worth the money just as I feel good hand tools are well worth the money to someone wanting to do household repairs, etc. I have owned some pots and some skillets that needed lots of effort to scrub and clean--these Berndes items are truly soak-for-10-seconds and wipe clean, no matter how mean you've been to them. Because of their heft, it does take a bit longer for these to heat through, but maybe on the order of 30 seconds more--not a big deal, but still something to remember. No matter if you're doing soup, gumbo, bacon, pancakes, veggies, steaks, ham slices, potato pancakes, crab cakes, Chinese, goulash, etc., the cleanup afterwards is amazingly easy. Did you hear that, not only do they cook well but they clean well.I have no financial interest in Berndes or in any of their distributors in any way. But I really like their stuff.

BEST NON-STICK SKILLETS IN THE WORLD

I own two BERNDES skillets and am saving for a third larger one. The 8-inch skillet makes the BEST omelettes.If you are shopping for a non-stick skillet buy Berndes. I'm not kidding. I've tried several (recommended by Cooks Illustrated) and those skillets died a quick death. Berndes non-stick seem indestructable, the weight is balanced and they clean so easily that I'm shocked every time.I use All-Clad saucepans, and Berndes skillets. I'm a happy cook.

The best nonstick I have ever used!

After years of teflon and nonstick pans that aren't really "nonstick," I found Berndes....I had previously purchased and returned, not one, but two Calphalon sets of nonstick pots and pans because after a few uses, the bottoms appeared to be losing the coating and were discoloring. And they were not really "nonstick." I purchased the Berndes after Mary McDougall, cookbook author and queen of low fat cooking, told me about this fabulous saute pan that is truly nonstick. She told me that I would love it and she was right. I truly love it and it just wipes clean or sometimes needs just a little soak in warm water and then it wipes clean. I have yet to scrub or use dish detergent on it at all. I didn't even need to pre-oil it. I truly can cook without fats not and I am delighted.

great grill pan

I saw this pan being used at a cooking demonstration by a chef who was not pushing any product. I immediately noticed how easy it was to clean after it's use. That was the major reason I became interested.It cooks evenly and cleans so much easier than my other grill pans. It's light weight and a must for any kitchen.

My expectation was high & it didn't fail me

In the beginning I was only looking for a George Foreman kind of small grill machine so we can still enjoy grill steaks & burgers in winter. But I just couldn't find a machine with the right size & function in my price range. I especially dislike that fact that with most of those machines you can't really control the temperature well. Then I saw someone's blog mentioned Berndes grill pan & I was immediately attracted by its features. Comparing to the grill machine this is more like real cooking so naturally for me, a homemaker who enjoys cooking, this fits my needs much better so I'm willing to spend more. Before I finally made my purchase I've read so many reviews about Berndes. People brag about how good its non-stick surface work. I was a little skeptical, but I'm a believer now that I've used it for a week. I've used it for grilled chickens, steaks, fishes, lamb chops & they're all good, plus I could rid off lots of fat. The pan is very easy to clean too. Yesterday I whipped a few eggs, wanted to make scramble egg but decided to test my Berndes Grill pan on how non-stick it can be. Without applying any oil I pour my whipped eggs on the pan & turn to medium heat. A few minutes later I pulled up an egg sheet(with light grill marks) and my Berndes pan is as clean as it hasn't been used. Neat~Amazon has the best price for this 12" pan. Thanks to Amazon!

Berndes is wonderful

Berndes makes the best non-stick skillets you'll ever use. Before ordering this one, make sure you really want the 13-inch model. It is HUGE. Really huge. Go to a store and make sure that this is really the size you want. Other than the enormous size, this thing is perfect. Perhaps the large size is what you're looking for, but not for me.

Just what I needed

I am so happy with my choice. The last non-stick pan I had was warped, thin, and scarred. Everything stuck to it and it probably seeped toxic chemicals. So it took a while to decide to order this one, and even longer because I was afraid it would be too big, as some of the reviews implied. In the end, I decided to trust Susan V. of the Fat-Free Vegan Kitchen, who loves everything about this pan, including its 13-inch diameter. Most skillets I've owned have been slightly annoying because they're never quite big enough for whatever I want to cook in them. This one has enough room to cook two separate items (e.g. heat two veggie burgers and toast the buns--two tops and two bottoms--at the same time) and big enough to hold a large recipe of anything. The size would be even better if the sides of the skillet were a half to one inch higher, but I'm learning to be more careful in how I move the food around while cooking. The most surprising feature of this pan is its engineering--I don't know what else to call it. For its size, it is light weight, but the walls are thick and smooth. I didn't realize before that most of my cookware has "hot spots" where the food tends to burn first. This pan has no hot spots, and even when I turn the (gas) heat up to full throttle, the food cooks evenly. It produces nicely crisped food (made sauteed tempeh last night) on high heat without burning. My main reason for wanting a non-stick pan was for no-fat cooking, and this one is magic--all those foods that stick in other pans, even when I use oil, come out perfectly in this one, even when the pan is completely dry. And cleaning is a snap. Mostly I can give the pan a quick rinse and all food traces are gone, but if there's any residue from cooking, it comes off with a soft sponge (not a scrubby), soap and water. I have just ordered Berndes 13-Inch Glass Lid because my only means of covering a pan of this size is a large cookie sheet, and it's not ideal. So save yourself time and order the skillet and glass top at the same time.

Great pan!

I have a number of Berndes products and have been impressed with all of them. This SignoCast skillet is wonderful. The non-stick coating really works- for everything. I've used it for meat, eggs, gravy and sauces and nothing sticks. It heats evenly and sits flat on the burner. This pan is LARGE but that's another reason I like it. If you don't want something this big, there are smaller sizes that might work better for you. A great product!

Awesome Buy

At home we were buying a $10.00 bag every five days. We've had this fifty pound for four months and it's still not gone. The bunnies were wasting most of the stuff from the store because it wasn't the "second cut" sold online here, described at the time of purchase. Animals have a preference which cut they want. All that the stores were selling was first cut and our pets wouldn't eat anything we could buy locally. This was our solution to interruped sleep at night because the bunnies are finally satisfied.

Improving on perfection

I'd always been very happy with my 17" Apple LCD monitor, which I'd run in a dual LCD setup with my Samsung 17" flat panel. However, as is so often the case, it died within a couple of months of the warranty running out.

Repair wasn't really an option - when the panel itself dies, the out-of-warranty repair cost is in the same league as the cost of a new one. So I had two choices - I could buy another 17", and retain my two monitor setup, or go for a larger LCD monitor and recover some desk space.

Since Apple's 17" display is getting a little elderly, I decided to go for the latter option. The Samsung replaced the CRT display on the household PC and Apple's 20" Cinema display was duly ordered.

It wasn't going to give me quite as much screen space - each of the 17" monitors had been 1280x1024 - but I'd found the differing brightnesses of the two displays distracting, and two 1280x1024 monitors are *not* the same as a 2560x1024 monitor. I figured that in practical terms, the 1680x1050 of the 20" display would give me as much usable space, plus it'd be better for watching movies on.

The monitor is, in appearance, very similar to my old 17" display. It's got the same clear plastic legs, the same touch sensitive "buttons" and power/sleep, and it's got a built-in USB hub just like the 17" had. It also requires an ADC connection, which'll annoy those who only have DVI output, but which is great if you have ADC output, since you end up with the video signal, power and the USB connection all going through a single cable, eliminating clutter.

As for the display quality itself - I can't really compare it directly with my 17" on account of that being rather dead, but other than the considerably increased size, the 20" appears to be a lot brighter - too bright if you leave the brightness up full - and to have a higher contrast. The overall result of this is that things look a lot crisper.

I've also noticed that the display sleeps/wakes more quickly than the 17" did. The 17" had a clear "warmup" period when you awoke the system, where the display would be rather dim for the first 20 seconds or so before jumping to full brightness. The 20" has a similar 2-step sequence, but it takes just a couple of seconds to go from sleep to full brightness.

Any downside? Well, there's still quite a price jump from the 17" display, you'll need a decent graphics adapter (since the display resolution is too much for the DVI output from some older cards), and it's strictly OS X 10.2 or later only.

If your Mac meets those specs though, and you want more space than the 17" display but don't feel quite rich enough for one of the really huge Apple displays, the 20" Cinema Display is an excellent compromise.

Couldn't be happier

I do a lot of graphic and video work with my Mac, using some Photoshop, Illustrator and Maya, but mainly Final Cut Pro (Apple's video editing package). After using Lacie's electron19blue III (19" CRT) monitor for some months, Apple introduced this 20" LCD, and lowered the price of their 23" LCD... I decided to buy this 20" and continue using the CRT, in a dual-monitor arrangement. I'm so glad I did. I was worried about the font-smoothing (anti-aliasing) Macs use, and thought it would defeat the LCD sharpness advantage. I shouldn't have worried. The smoothing does add a TOUCH of blurriness to text, but it's still clearer than the CRT. Images & icons & such are not smoothed, and are startlingly sharp. I didn't realize how blurry the CRT would look in comparison!

The monitor is a work of art, and looks great next to my G4 tower. There's absolutely no flicker whatsoever. The colors look as true as my calibrated Lacie, right out of the box. I only have a small gripe: it's just TOO bright. A pure white page is BRIGHT. You can lower the brightness using the software control, but even when brought down to a reasonable level, there is still a TOUCH of light bleed-through with pure black. It's really only noticable in a dark room - the black of the Lacie is blacker than the black of the Apple. Again, this is small, since any amount of ambient light is enough to miss it. Still, it's something to be aware of.

The single-cable setup is pure genius - anything to get rid of cable-clutter is welcome. If you have an ADC video connector (I believe any recent Power Macs do) you'll love it. There are two USB 1.1 ports on the back of the monitor, where I plug in my keyboard & memory stick reader.

I highly recommend this monitor - I find myself only using this monitor & just using the Lacie for odds & ends (iTunes and program palettes) since the LCD is just plain easier to read & much sharper.

Perfect combo: Apple 20" Display and Amazon Customer Service

I had the 15" Display. (Nice but small) The 17" Display (Nice) And now the 20" Display. (Nice and awesome). In my opinion as far as resolution, aethetics, flicker free operation and quality all three have been pretty much indistinguishable. Apple puts out a quality product here. Better I believe than anyone else. And they should. You pay more. It's not easy justifying the cost...until you watch a DVD and you feel like you're in the movie. Wow. In a word. Awesome. True plug and play. It makes watching a DVD on television archaic. I didn't get the 23" cause I really couldn't afford to or in any way justify that but it's really, really something to behold. Albeit if you sit too close it's too much of a good thing. For my needs the 20" is the answer. Great screen real estate, stunning, perfect graphics and it even looks good turned off. Now how many displays can boast that? And of special note: The only thing better the 20" was buying it at Amazon. Amazon was so incredible. I had a problem they took care of me like nobody's business. So thanks Amazon. You guys rock!
