1Good Binoculars but Not for Navigation
By M. Owens
The name "mariner" in the product title would suggest that these binoculars are suitable for marine navigation, especially since they have an integrated digital compass. However, I knew I was in for trouble when I opened the box and read the instruction manual, which listed the accuracy of the compass at plus/minus 5 deg. An error of 5 deg. in marine coastal navigation could place you miles off course, and after comparing the binoculars to a hand-bearing compass and a GPS, I found that the error was actually closer to 7 deg. So, if you want a pretty good pair of binoculars with a novelty compass for fun, then these would be fine for you. If you plan to use them for navigation purposes, they are unusable.

5Hey, they are Fujinon!
By D. Woods
These binoculars don't appear to be built quite as heavy-duty as some of Fujinon's other (more costly) models, so I think they would need to be handled with some degree of care. And, I'm not real partial to the individual eye focus controls, but this type of focus setup is very common on most Fujinon models (I'm sure I'll survive that little inconvenience). But, they still have the great, high quality, optics that Fujinon is so well known for. The compass is nice for anyone who wants to have one handy (or for those people who need one), and it seems to be quite accurate (at least my compass is). I haven't found any real need (for me personally) for the reticle (just yet), but I can see where it might be very handy for other applications. The large exit pupil size (7.1mm) makes these binoculars great for use in darker conditions, and they give some stunning views of the night sky (lots of stars!). It also has a tripod mount, so with an adapter & a tripod, a person is ready for longer periods of comfortable viewing, as well as having a steady view. I'm very happy with my set!

5Great Fujinon Optics
By Joseph Nicolay
Review of the Fujinon Mariner series 7x50 WP-XL (without compass) and WPC-XL (with compass)Both binocular models are the same unit. These were the least expensive Fujinon binoculars on the market before the Offroad Series, but are far from entry level for performance. I've owned these for about a year prior to this review, and have used these at Broadway shows, in the mountains North Idaho and Alaska, at sea (on a cruise), birding, stargazing, and in the rain. The binoculars perform extraordinarily well, and are in my opinion one of the better 7x50 binoculars you can buy under $200.Here are some facts and observations that are typically not included about the binoculars on seller's sites. The body color is closer to grey than the blue displayed in pictures, and is a hard composite. The only rubber parts are those that are colored black. The binoculars' prism was affected in one of the tubes per a boating supply retailer after performing a drop test. To that I say it must have been some drop, because the binoculars are sturdy. The composite body makes the unit light which means longer viewing in an unsupported position, and they float in water. The prisms are supported in a metal bracket internally, and you can safely assume that they are bak-4 at the given price and brand. The optics can become ever so slightly distorted at the extreme edges -as do all binoculars without an additional field-flattening lens -usually found in the high end models. Looking at an object with intense direct sunlight coming from the same direction sometimes causes a hazing effect with the sun just out of field of view. The optics are fully-coated. Fujinon verified this after I read from four major retailers that the optics are multi-coated, and five others that they are fully-coated. The coating looks to be a slight purplish color which means that Fujinon opted to increase the brightness of the green/yellow wavelength for ocean goers. In multi-coated lenses there are usually a few more coatings that reduce the reflection of the other major visible wavelengths -each additional coating decreasing the reflection of its compliment. Plain uncoated glass reflects about 4% of the light at every surface, and even the yellow/green compliment will have some positive effect on reducing reflection in the other wavelengths. In theory, and assuming that like most binoculars this one uses six lenses with one coating on each side, light transmission will be under 86% (a single coating reduces light loss down to 1.3% per surface, so (.987)^12=.8546).The focus is individual, so instead of adjusting for every distance, I adjust to 30 meters for bird watching which gives a nice crisp image from 30 meters and on. The eye relief is good enough to where I can keep my glasses on without folding the cups over. For viewing objects closer than the focused distance, you can slightly move the binoculars away from the eyes. The bottom line is that these are great binoculars that present a bright, crisp image, don't fog up, are waterproof, and float. For the complete fully multi-coated binoculars with a field-flattening lens, expect to pay over $600 for a reputable brand.

7x50 FMTR Binocular Product Description:

Product Description

In the new Fujinon "SX" series binoculars, every lens and prism surface is coated with a special new EBC process. The result is an overall brightness factor of 95% across the full visible spectrum - images up to some 15% brighter than any other high quality binoculars! Testing proved it. So will your own eyes. The benefit is outstanding vision in low light and at night - an especially important consideration in marine applications. Except for electronically amplified optical systems, such as those used in night vision scopes, Fujinon SX binoculars deliver the brightest image possible. The F-SX Type is a high-grade series of flat image plane-type binocular that encapsulates Fujinon technology. Making the image plane flat enables observation of the marginal area of a visual field, reproduces sharper, more true to life colors, and minimize distortions and astigmatism. Featuring construction that complies with the most stringent US military specifications, the housing is made of light alloy for maximum durability and minimal weight. To improve water and fog resistance, the housing is dry nitrogen filled and sealed at the factory. Rubber armoring provides extra impact resistant protection and are easier to grip when wet. Available with or without compass.

5Excellent optics at a (relatively) affordable price
By Jon F
I've owned this Pentax PF80ED for four years now and I've found it to be a relative bargain in the world of high end spotting scopes. It's a matter of personal preference, but I have always preferred fixed power eyepieces over zooms. Fixed eyepieces are almost always better optically than zooms (though zooms are continually improving), though of course you are stuck with only one magnification unless you choose to swap lenses in the field.I was using the fixed XW14 eyepiece for several years which offers 37x with the angled version of this scope. Eventually I decided I'd like the option of a brighter image and wider field and I recently started using the XW20 eyepiece which offers 26x. I've found that for most birding applications, 26x is more than adequate. It is an excellent eyepiece- wide, very sharp and bright- and will show you all the detail you need 90% of the time. Atmospheric distortion and vibration are also minimized at this magnification.Certainly there are times you might want more magnification and the XW14 eyepiece will fit the bill (and of course you can always opt for the zoom eyepiece). Eye relief of these XW eyepieces is very good- about 20mm, which is more than adequate for those who wear eyeglasses as I do.I also like the position of the offset focus wheel (as opposed to a centrally positioned or ring type mechanism) on this scope which is easy to reach- even though I am a lefty- and very smooth in operation. The scope and eyepieces are well made. Weight is the only negative. The scope, eyepiece and a tripod are on the heavy side, but equal to or not much more than other comparable high end scopes. A very decent nylon case is included which can be left on while the scope is in use. This is a very nice spotting scope with a wide array of eyepiece options. Optical quality is excellent and at a very reasonable price (comparatively anyway). There are now several spotting scopes available that can outperform this Pentax (mostly at the high end of the magnification range), then again they cost 2-3 times as much. I wouldn't hesitate to make this purchase again. The PF-80ED offers excellent optical qualities, easy handling and a very decent price.

5Brilliant Quality ED spotting scope
By Amanda Bartels
I bought this Pentax after extensive research online, to find a scope which would show me 6mm holes in a 500 yard target. There are very few out there which do this, and I could not afford several $thousands for the Swarovski/Leica models. So the Pentax was the only option for me, affordable and MIGHT do the job. I took a punt.Well, happy to say it does the job brilliantly. At 500 yards the image is crystal clear, no chroma, bright and sharp. I can see not only 6mm bullet holes, but the tiny blowback marks around each hole plus scratches on the plate. It's simply magnificent. At the target range, I had it sitting on a small Velbon tripod next to my rifle. The Pentax has the ability to roll the body through left to right on the tripod, so it was easy to position with a sideways tilt to enable me to look through the nicely-angled eyepiece at the target, then transfer my eye to the riflescope and shoot, and then back to the Pentax to see how I did, all without changing the position of my body. The same can be done when lying prone in the field. It's really easy when self-spotting, but also helpful if you are spotting for a mate and you need to zoom out quickly to locate the target, and then zoom in to watch the projectile. Under good conditions you will see the shockwave of the bullet as it travels. However, I do need to add a rider. To get this kind of quality at that distance, you need an equal quality eyepiece to go with it. The 20-60x zoom that came with the package is out of this world and in my mind superior to that offered by either the Leica or Swarovski eyepieces. Put together, the image is breathtaking.I'd also add that this is under near-perfect optical conditions. No wind, no mirage, and a stable and solid tripod. When mirage starts to boil up, then the image becomes blurred and much less useful. However, no scope will give you a clear image under those conditions, so I don't repine.Apart from the optical quality it's also an excellent field scope in that the lens is filled with anti-fogging gas and it's very sturdy construction, as you would expect. It's light enough to cart around on top of a moderately heavy tripod for a kilometre or two over hilly terrain. And I'm smallish and not very strong, so a big person wouldn't have any trouble. All in all, a brilliant buy and one I would recommend to anyone who wants a high-end scope of apochromatic quality and performance but without the scary price tag.Note: I didn't buy this for birdwatching, but for target shooting and long-distance small vermin spotting. I can't evaluate it as a birding scope, but if you can see a baby rabbit at 700 yards clearly enough to show its fur markings, I'm guessing you can identify at least some birds with it.

5Outstanding value!
By Craig Broeking
I was upgrading from my Alpen 80mm scope and did a considerable amount of research since it seems rather difficult to compare/touch/view spotting scopes (not many people carry a diverse/quality selection). The review on Better View Desired allowed me to take the leap and make this purchase without ever seeing this piece of equipment (PF-80ED-A). Their point that why don't manufacturers/designers make a scope around a quality eyepiece as opposed to the objective lense. I have read numerous articles on the quality of the Pentax eyepieces (I now own the SMC zoom,XW7,XW10 and XW14 eyepieces)and those reviews convinced me this was the right decision. I now own my "scope for life" and can't imagine EVER wanting/needing to purchase another spotting scope AND I have looked through a fair number of other brands that cost considerably more and are from most of the big European names. On a recent birding group outing (estimated 25-30 attendees), I had my scope set up and one of the more knowledgable/experienced birders looked through my Pentax and said "this is the best view/scope out here". I mount it on an Induro tripod with a Manfrotto head. I am a very particular person when it comes to products of any sort and I stand by my claim that this scope is fantastic even when you don't compare it price-wise to many of the more expensive European counterparts. My binoculars of choice are the old but reliable Nikon Superior E 8X32. Happy birding!

5A Bird's Eye in View!
By H. Moro
I purchased this scope for watching hawks. When I purchased this scope two years ago, I wasn't quite ready to pony up for a Zeiss or Tele Vue scope; I was just hoping I could find something I'd be happy with until I could afford what I wanted. But my compromise ended up being anything but! With a Pentax XW eyepiece, the Pentax PF-80ED competes more than favorably with many top grade scopes at less than half the price. I'm continually amazed by its bright, sharp image. I've put thousands of field hours on this scope since I first reviewed it, and I remain very satisfied with this scope's performance even after looking through the latest offerings from the big names. I recommend that you buy the scope body *without* the SMC zoom eyepiece, which has poor eye relief and is optically mediocre compared to Pentax's superb XW line. Pentax's "worry-free" warranty is first-rate, and covers both the body and the eyepiece, no matter what you manage to do to them. And Pentax may be the only manufacturer to use universal 1.25" eyepiece mounts in their bird scopes, which means that your fancy astronomy eyepieces will fit this scope. Other manufacturers should take a cue from Pentax's example!

5Not ashamed of this scope
By Gary
This is an absolutely excellent quality scope. Image is sharp to the edge. Focus very good for just one focus knob. Quality build and is certainly a "Best Buy". I have never noticed any fringing, even in difficult situations. You don't have to spend 2500+ dollars to get a great image. Pentax is good. I can lay on the porch with the Big Dogs now.

4Pentax Field Scope
By AfterBurner
Being very familiar with Pentax Telescopes and eyepieces I decided to give the Field scope a try. My intended use was competition rifle shooting and i needed this scope for viewing targets at 1000 yards. The scopes quality of construction is excellent it is covered in the typical rubberized material. The focuses is very precise and operates smoothly. When testing a focuser you want to see and image snap into focus then snap out. This field scope does exactly that. The internal baffling works well and the images are bright and crisp. The detail in objects this scope provides makes it superior to many others.I am confident when I recommend this as a Birding or Shooting scope. Where it doesn't do well is Planetary viewing there will be color fringing errors on the planet edges.

5A MUST have accessory for your Nikon Scanner
By Christopher Glodde
I returned from Iraq and instead of buying a new Nikon D-100 I purchased a new Nikon Coolscan 5000 and soon afterwards, I purchased the Strip Film Holder FH-3. I have found out that the Nikon Negative adapter (SA-21) may not be able to scan a negative on the edge of a film strip; using the FH-3 I was able to do so. I have found it to be a must have accessory to have around when doing negative scanning.

5Film Strip Holder
By Bruce Taszarek
This is one of those tools that you either don't need or can't do without. If you want to scan 35mm positive or negative images in your Coolscan 5000 (or similar device), and you only have a single frame or two frames, you need this tool. There's simply no other way to do it. For its stated purpose, it works great. I also found I could use it to scan some smaller (Minox-sized) negative and positive images, and it worked fine.

4FH-3 film strip holder - indispensable component
By Dr. T. Lantos
I have recently bought a Coolscan 5000ED film scanner from Nikon. The FH-3 film strip holder in question comes separately as an optional add-on for $25. It accommodates film strips up to 6 frames long, and holds them in the focal plane of the scanner. It is an indispensable component to the scanner, should you process film strips less than 6 frames long. Well, it's a shame really, Nikon decided not to bundle with the scanner that sold for $1049 or more. To harness the full potential of Coolscan 5000ED or V, you really need one of the FH-3 holder. It is a big help if you process short pieces of film, 2-3 frames long, or even a single naked frame. Actually, I bought two: while the first holder is in the scanner, I can load the second one with films.

This product works great. I have had it for a couple of years now and have used it for various snorkeling trips. It works great -- keeps my camera completely dry. It is a little challenging to work the camera buttons dials but nothing too concerning.

5Amazing light!
By This Guy
I have used this box for a few months now for many shoots in studio and on location and I can honestly say that it produces the best light i've ever worked with! I own other Rotalux boxes and I'm very happy with them. The best part about them all is the ease of the installation and how quickly they fold up to be put away. I highly recommend it and any other Rotalux!!!

4easy to suggest
By Stephen Pellerine
I am a great fan of elenchorme, and for the buck, it is hard to go wrong here. This particular modifier is so easy to use - even I think for someone new to lighting. This, if you are considering getting into studio light - is a great item. The construction of the units are not rock solid, that should be know, but they are considerably sturdy - and the the price it would be hard to match. It is the 53 that is included here that makes this an amazing deal - go for it.
