5Nothing like the Original Steiff teddy bears!
By Linda Woods
I grew up in Germany and had Steiff animals when I was little. There is nothing like the quality of the bears or other animals. I learned to appreciate the quality of the animals and how different they were from regular stuffed animals from the time I was a little girl. As an adult, I wanted another one to replace the ones that got lost throughout the years when I had moved so many times. I know you will love this teddy bear as much as I do!

5Steiff teddy bear
By KRLWL
This bear is wonderful. It is very well made, sturdy, and I anticipate that it will stand up to many years of active play. The bear has great replay value, has stimulated many imaginative games, has been integrated into "plays" and puppet shows. Though it is expensive, I think that it is worth it because of it's quality and durability. I wouldn't be surprised if it lasts to be passed on to my children's children. The seller was wonderful. He did extensive research to determine whether the growler was the same as the squeaker. He was very kind about doing it. I will preferentially choose to buy from this seller again

5Grundig shortwave
By mahogany09
This radio is of excellent quality and the receive on AM, FM and shortwave is very good. Being a ham radio operator I really appreciate the rotary tuning knob that has a fine tuning adjustment knob built in. I just can't see myself buying an expensive shortwave radio with no tuning knob. Half the fun of radio is being able to play with a VFO! I also own the GE superadio that other reviewers have commented on. The Grundig does not feel and look cheap like the GE superadio but the GE superadio will outperform the Grundig in a side by side comparison. The superadio has two speakers that are designed for better fidelity and louder audio than the smaller Grundigs single speaker can achieve. When listening to weak stations in heavy static on the AM band the superadio did a better job of pulling out the audio. The shortwave reception is the best part of the radio however and this radio is a real jewel for shortwave use! The selectivity is great, no overlapping of stations that is found on cheaper shortwave radios like the Sangean SG 622. The radios sensitivity is excellent also, I could not ask for better performane from a shortwave radio. I know I made the correct decision passing up some of the more expensive Sony and Grundig shortwave radios that look so tempting to buy but lack a knob to tune with.

5Best All-Around Premium Radio for the Money
By M. JEFFREY MCMAHON
As a radio freak with no tolerance for even the slightest glitches in reception, I own three premium radios: a portable Sony ICF-SW35, a Tivoli PAL, and, most recently, the Grundig S350. If I had to choose one, I'd go in a heart beat with the big military style retro Grundig. First, its reception beats the Tivoli PAL (second place) and the Sony (third place). It's tied with the Tivoli for ease of use. But it beats the Tivoli in sound and is thirty to fifty dollars cheaper. I would have saved twenty dollars had I bought the Grundig on Amazon with free shipping and no tax. But I got impatient and bought it at a so-called discount outlet. I learned my lesson. Back to the Grundig. Its owner's manual is the best and easy to understand. The radio produces clear, big sound. I get KGO 810 radio from San Francisco in my Los Angeles home with the Grundig. I get weak stations loud and clear. Try getting the jazz station or an NPR station at the left of the dial any clearer. You won't. The telescopic antenna is huge and says it means serious business. In short, the Grundig radio indulges those who, like me, must have confidence in their reception. Finally, let me tell you I compared the Grundig S350 to smaller, more portable Grundig models and I'm sorry but those models were cheap and tinny compared to the big Grundig S350. In fact, one Grundig model , a tiny piece of tin with inferior sound and reception, cost almost twice as much. No way. For every day use, stick with the Grundig S350.

5Great radio!
By Ingalls
I love this radio. I fell in love with it because of the unique retro-military analog design - all of those analog dials! The sound is big and full. Am reception is strong - I could detect no difference between this and the GE Superadio. Shortwave: I only bother with BBC and Voice of America (VOA), and Radio Canada and they all come in great. If you are a shortwave fanatic who tries to get third world countries in, I have no idea how it will do as I have no interest in that. FM is very good. It has a sleep timer, alarm, clock, BIG numeric LCD display and bright back light.. The handle is comfortable. I also have a Yacht Boy from Grundig but that is only because this is too big to slip into my briefcase. If I could, I would take this with me everywhere! My favorite radio!

5Can't do better
By A Customer
Scanner Quality ***Copier Quality *****Printer Quality *****Cost per page *****Speed *****

Basically if you need a good scanner you probably still want to buy one. Although, if you spend less than $100 on a non CCD scanner you probably won't get anything better.

I took a stack of documents to local stores and tried probably 10 different laser copier/printer/scanner machines made by HP, Canon, Sharp, Xerox, Samsung, etc. HP's and Canon's were a little better in photo print quality, but Canon only has 2MB of non-expandable printer memory (even though up to 8MB can be used for copying). HP copied at a rate of about 2-3 pages per minute (no joke!) unless you wanted to rip off 20 copies of a single page.

Brother had the most solid machine and it actually even copies different sheets pretty close to the rate claimed. HP's had broken paper trays at most stores and Canon's seamed to always have paper jams. Samsung's were similar to Brother but they looked old and the toners were all used up at all but one of the places I went to.

I don't have anything bad to say about my Brother other than the scanner isn't great for making scans of photos. The scanner is lightning fast though for OCR type grayscale scanning.

5Fast, quiet, and efficient
By A Customer
This unit replaced my HP 5P laser printer and an older, much larger Sharp copier which had seen it's better days. Both of these laser functions greatly surpass my older pieces of equipment.

The scanner also works great although it did take a little practice to figure it out since I had never used one before.

I opted not to get the model with the fax since that feature doesn't seem necessary...one can scan in a document or photo and e-mail it.

After agonizing over different models and visiting the various office stores in town I'm glad I settled on this machine. It seems like a much better unit than most of the multi-function machines that include a fax and thus skimp on the copy, print, and scan functions.

5This machine is perfect for small offices
By Albert
For our small office of 6 people, we have been looking for an office machine that is easy to operate, reliable, and cost-effective. The four contenders are HP 3330 MFP, Canon D680 imageClass, Brother MFC 9700, Brother MFC 8820D. They are all 4-in-1/5-in-1 machines(Fax, Laser printer, Scanner, Copier, Data/Fax modem) priced below US$800. Brother MFC 9700 is cheaper but comes with a 14.4k modem and only 8MB memory and a smaller flatbed; as the result it faxes and prints slower than MFC 8820D. The remaining three candidates all have excellent "pedigrees" and are well designed and built. However Brother MFC 8820D won at the end for the following outstanding reasons:

1. The 'D' in 8820D stands for duplex copying and printing: It works seamlessly and effortless. There is no need for removing the paper tray manually (really tedious). Duplex "fax receive" saves 30% to 50% of paper by having fax printed on both sides. Now one can have some break from the cost of receiving junk faxes.

2. 32MB memory: This is more than enough for holding a lot of copies and faxes. Very good for large unattended jobs. The best part about this is again about cost. No immediate need to spend more money for upgrading the memory as is required for Canon D680 (measly 2 MB).

3. PC fax software for computer data/fax needs.

4. Expandability for network interface.

5. Digital paper count to indicate the no. of copies made and faxes received: good for cost management and safe guard against potential abuse of the machine by employees for personal uses.

6. Excellent ADF (automatic document feeder): we have not had any paper jam so far.

7. Very easy to program and operate: simple to use for beginners and sophisticated features for users who demand more advanced functions.

8. Last but not the least is the cheaper cost for its toner on a per page basis.

There are only two minor drawbacks for us:

1. MFC 8820D's ADF/scanner does not scan a page from edge to edge. However this is true of all machines in this price range. Canon D680 omits the least at both margins. HP 3330 is the worst.

2. Large footprint. We had to relocate it to a different room in the office where there is enough space instead of putting it at a more convenient place where there is easier access. Nevertheless it's not too bad considering that it replaces 4 separate machines all at once. Besides it forces us to walk down the hallway and get some exercies!! ;--]

5The best duplex laser-scanner-fax under $600, by far
By Jack Falk
... and I've seen lots. After getting burned (very badly) by a Sharp AL-1641CS, the Brother 8820D was a wonderful experience.

  • The five-line dot matrix LCD screen is essential -- a device without it is going to be very, very hard to use.
  • The toner cartridge has a refill port on it (although Brother tells you not to use it)
  • The interesting "top heavy" design looks a bit strange, but comes in very handy when you realize that you can put the small footprint all the way at the edge of a table/desk.
  • The printer and ADF mechanisms appear to be quite heavy duty -- probably only one step below the HP 8100 (which IMHO, is the pinnacle of modern super-rugged office machinery)
  • Color fidelity on the scanner is very good; better than most multifunction devices.
  • The ADF is unbelievably fast when you scan at 100dpi grayscale -- I'm guessing here, but it must be in excess of 60 pages per minute. Paper literally flies through it. Color scans are much slower, but still quite reasonable.
  • BROTHER SUPPORTS MACS
  • BROTHER SUPPORTS LINUX
  • Unlike one of the other reviewers, I've found that the device scans to within 3mm of all margins -- I just did a test run and it was within 1mm of most of the margins. I'm sort of amazed that it can get this close. I think part of this is that it doesn't use the same part of the flatbed glass for ADF scanning that it uses for flatbed scanning -- there's a special separate strip of glass that curves downward to help the paper feed more evenly.
  • Very sharp, high quality output.
  • This printer has a real CPU in it with a generous amount of memory. Nothing is more frustrating than shelling out for a device only to realize that its ability to act as a printer was a complete afterthought, and that it chokes whenever you try to print anything too complex (cough, cough, Sharp, cough).
Negatives:
  • Paper curls a bit after printing, although every compact laser printer has this problem (due to high-temperature fusers). The paper generally flattens out after 5-10 minutes.
  • The mac scanner driver causes Image Capture to crash if you try to use the ADF. This is pretty annoying. Other than this, the drivers are excellent -- unobtrusive, simple, and reliable. The bundled software is a steaming pile, but that's true of nearly every hardware product.
  • It only holds half a ream of paper (250 sheets), so you're always left with these torn-open half-empty reams lying around. Unfortunately the second input tray (so you can put two half-reams in) is unjustifiably expensive.
  • No postscript support.
In short, if you need duplex printing, don't waste your time with any other multifunction -- this is the one you want. If you can live without duplex, the range of options you have is much larger, although I still don't know of a device that beats this one.
