5HP DESKJET 3820 Cart Horse
By shut...that...gate
I got this new 8 years ago. It served me as a student teacher and then a teacher. It only encountered problems when I tried to use recycled cartridges and then ultimately I had given up on anything half decent coming out of it when I bought a new pc that was not on Windows 2000. The new driver for Windows 7 was rubbish. Then, lo and behold, when I was looking for a Laser (having gone through other 2 pathetic printers in the meantime), I had one last look at the 3820 and found a better driver (970Cse - the Cse is the important bit there). I have just bought a genuine HP 78 colour cartridge and hey presto! The beast lives on! This thing has outlived and survived computers, scanners, printers, house moves, renovation dust and parts of ceiling being dropped on it. Do they still make them like this?

4An excellent printer at 54.99 or less only!
By stewart L
The hp 3820 is an excellent printer.I have used the printer for over a year. The weak point is the cost of ink...My printer is trouble free and a joy to use.Watch out though,i saw one seller marking this unit up to almost 1000 bucks!!!!!!!!!!Dont be scammed!!! Dont pay more than 54 dollars for new and less for a refurb, which i dont recommend....Check the sales and buy new!!Please make sure the retailer has a refund/return policy of at least 30 days should you have a problems.Thank you 09/19/07

1$81 worth of junk and non-service
By Stephen R Purdy
I bought one Canon S35 Toner Cartridge [for Canon D300 series, D320, and L170] for $75 plus $5.99 s/h from this vendor [asbookstore] via Amazon, and what I received was completely worthless. After installing the toner cartridge, I was shocked to see that every page that I printed had 3/32"-high black horizontal bars (spaced just under 1.5" apart) running across every page that came out of my Canon. I know it's not the printer because it has performed flawlessly for years ...until "asbookstore"'s lame product entered the scene. I used Amazon's feedback feature to contact this vendor for remediation (read "refund") and waited nine calendar days (until today) for them to at least have the decency to respond. Naturally, they completely ignored my complaint, and why not! --- they already had my money and sent me that piece-of-junk cartridge to throw away for them. Now my printer is down until I go out and repurchase a cartridge to get back up and running again. What a joke! The only reason I rated this outfit 1 Star is because I wasn't sure whether Amazon's "Create Your Review" feature would permit me to register a Zero Star rating instead. This is the first time I've been scammed through the Amazon portal, so I'm not blaming them --- sooner or later you're bound to run into a ripoff like this, even through a highly reputable establishment like Amazon. BE WARNED, and save yourself some $$ and the hassle of having to write your own version of this rating.

4FX-8, not S-35
By Howard Lang
I was surprised when it arrived to see it was an FX-8, rather than S-35 cartridge. Apparently they are the same. Also, the packing list stated it had an expiration date of 2008. Neither of these facts were mentioned on the product page.

The cartrige installed easily and worked right away. However the printing is very light and can not be adjusted. This is OK for printed material, but maps and other graphic material are illegible.

5A Great Value
By Scott Walton
I selected this copier/printer based on price, features and the Canon name. I felt like I got "Oh such a deal" at the time I bought mine in Sept.08. It was painless to set up: install the software; plug in the USB cable (not provided) when prompted and click and Voila! I set it up as a shared printer and it is now the main printer in our 4 PC home network.- Its quick- Makes clear, clean copies- Not as quiet as some when printing but definitely not loud- Top sheet feeder works well, even for multiple sheets- Toner cartridge was a breeze to install- Enters and exits its "sleep" mode flawlessly, even from another PC on the network- Comes with a FULL TONER CARTRIDGE, not a starter. For those who do not know about this: many new printers, especially when being sold at LOW prices, are sold with a toner cartridge that's only good for a few hundred copies at most. Just enough to get you started on day one and to give you time to go buy a "real" toner cartridge. This is often how the mfg's will move more units, by selling them at super-low prices knowing they will make their profits on you returning for toner. With the rebate I couldn't pass this up, although if I were paying full retail I would have chosen one that also scans to the PC. This one DOES NOT. It is only a printer and copier. I would also consider one that has a Print server and NIC built-in IF I could also connect directly for scanning.I would recommend this printer.

4Good printer and copier, with a few flaws
By Jimmy Parsons
When I first got this machine, I was ready to give it 5 stars. It set up easily and made fast, great quality copies. I noticed a couple of glitches but thought them minor. But after a few days I have discovered shortcomings of the unit, hence the 4-stars. I was considering 3 but figure that's too low since it does basic things well. It is a multi-purpose machine, but not all-purpose.Pros:* Excellent quality printing and copies* Scan-once-print-many I think describes how the machine copies - scans a document once and prints as many copies as you order. Good feature!* Fast (compared to my old HP LJ5P)* Simple toner cart loading* Allows straight-through printing for heavy stock you don't want to curl* Fairly easy manual paper feed, but with a shut-down quirk (see below)* Standby mode nice to save energy* Good price after rebateCons:* It's not a computer-linked scanner as I thought. Looks like one, isn't.* Paper handling is less than stellar. Paper cartridge falls out if not handled exactly correctly, but paper doesn't come out with it, spilling all over the floor (reminds me of the card game 52 Pickup). The cartridge actually is only half a cartridge -- open at the end inside the printer, not anchored well, feels flimsy. Paper tray on my old HP 5P is years better than this one.* Machine locks up if you feed an odd-size sheet through the manual paper feed. No way to reset it except unplug. So it prints only one odd-size sheet at a time. Print one, unplug, print another, unplug.... I'm used to a button that clears errors and resets. None on this printer. You can pre-set paper size to avoid the lockup, but sometimes I have one smaller sheet to print for which the unit does not have a setting.* Kind of big, both footprint and height, but that may not be a problem for you.The large block of "Cons" makes this look more negative than I feel it should, but those are the negatives I find. If you don't need a machine than scans to the computer, and if you can handle the quirky paper-feed requirements, it's great. At the price, if it were used just as a copier for a small office it would be well worth the price.

1Very outdated
By Mark Twain
I got this having read the other reviews and being relatively new to the land of buying printer/copiers. I'm not sure why this copier was so well reviewed.I am disappointed with this purchase because. . .-16pp/m is snail's pace by 2009 standards (wish I'd done that research first).-The surface glass is tiny and isn't good for anything larger than regular paper size. i.e.) try to photocopy any except small books and you can barely do two pages at a time-it won't work with Mac at all ever (called Canon)-return policy for some of these shippers is nonexistent (check first)

5High Quality Guaranteed
By A. Hargreaves
I picked up this printer to print 11x17 and the occasional 13x19 photo. I've owned a Canon back in 1997, but have been using Epson printers since. Now I'm switching back to Canon for good. This printer is flat out amazing. The print quality is fantastic, as is the design and quality feel of the actual product.

The materials and colors are nice, and not cheap and loud like Epson printers. My other Epson is a photo 820 which was only [$$] but a fortune for ink, and Epson never did finish the drivers for Mac OSX. It was advertised that it could do borderless printing, but it would only do it in OS9 which nobody uses anymore. The Canon prints borderless 13x19 prints in OSX and they're brilliant. Epson's are nice printers, and I think they had the edge for a few years but Canon has clearly caught up. I'm surprised how fast and quiet this printer is, but I guess that's what you get for [$$]. It's worth it though.

I am a graphic designer with a meticulous eye for detail -- trust me, this is a good product.

5This printer is like having a photo processing lab
By The Badboy
I needed a good printer for my business to print brochures and photo postcards. I received it today and printed a couple of family pictures I took with my Canon Powershot S20 3.3 Megapixel digital camera on a piece of the Canon Photo Paper Pro 4"x6" (5 sheets are included with the printer) to test the quality. I can truly say that the picture quality using this combo was better than labwork. The colors were more vibrant without the slightest hint of pixels anywhere. My jaw dropped to the floor when I saw this beautiful photo print in less than 30 seconds. This printer, I am convinced, is the best you can buy. It does borderless printing in all sizes... Even 13x19! Prints on other papers provided good results but not as stunning as the combo used above. I printed a borderless photo on a piece of regular 8 1/2x11 paper and it looked great!

This printer is truly a marvel and the speed is unmatched with the quality of the prints that rival and surpass professional photo labs. The Canon paper costs a few cents more but is well worth it. Make sure you get Canon Photo Paper Pro and not just the Photo Paper Plus. Ink use is minimal. I printed 5 4x6" photos, 3 5x7" photos and 3 8 1/2x11" photos and the ink level did not go down. I bought mock-up ink carts off of Ebay that cost $10.95 for all 6 carts! Truly, you cannot go wrong with this printer.

5Fantastic quality and speed - Photos and CAD
By A Customer
This is a perfect printer for a small architectural firm. The photo quality is remarkable - better than any lab has produced for us - and the speed is jaw dropping compared to Epson.

Haven't done large format photos yet - but have regularly printed 11 x 17 B/W CAD drawings - which are incredibly crisp even on plain paper. Tiny type is readable on reduced checkplots. I should have put a stopwatch to it, but it seems that a reduced D size print with complex title bar/graphics comes out in 15 seconds or so. Just received some 13 x 19 paper so that we can print D size (24 x 36) plots at exactly half size - giving accurate 1/8" scale drawings for example for what would be 1/4" scale on the plotter.

Separate ink tanks, quality and speed are what drew us to this printer. Will have to see how the ink lasts to see how economical it is in use.

  • Grips horizontally, vertically, and upside down for versatility
  • Upright base post has overall length of 7-7/16" length, with an adjustable 6" long rod

Product Description

Starrett 657AA Magnetic Base indicator holder is an all-inclusive kit for use with all Starrett test, back-plunger, dial, AGD, and miniature-dial indicators, as well as similar indicators from other manufacturers. The set includes a Starrett 657P magnetic base, a 657G upright base post, a 657S snug, a 657X rod, a 657Y indicator attachment, and a PT18724 snug.

The 657P magnetic base is 1-15/16” x 1-5/8” x 1-7/8” (50 x 40 x 48 mm) and has a push-button on/off switch for one-handed operation. The base has three precision-ground, magnetic contact points to grip horizontally, vertically, and upside-down. The V-step holds the base to arbors, shafts, and other cylindrical items. The base has an additional 1/4-20 tapped hole on one side for mounting the post. The magnetic base has a non-skid, black wrinkle finish on all non-working surfaces. The base post is 3/8” (9.5 mm) in diameter and 7-7/16” (190 mm) long. The Starrett 57S and 58S snugs may also be used with this post (sold separately). The 657S snug has two 1/4” (6.3-mm) diameter holes and adapts the 196, 650, and 651 series dial indicators and the 657Y indicator attachment to the 657X rod. The 657X rod is 1/4” (6.3 mm) in diameter and 6” (150 mm) long. It accommodates the Starrett 708, 709, 811, and 711F series dial test indicators. The 657Y indicator attachment has a 1/4” (6.3-mm) outer diameter hole on one end, while the other end is threaded to fit the backs of all AGD indicators (Starrett series 81, 25, 655, and 656) and series 80 miniature indicators. The PT18724 snug has a 3/8” (9.5 mm) diameter post hole and a 1/4” (6.3-mm) diameter gripping hole to accommodate the 657X rod.

Magnetic bases are magnetic fixtures commonly used in metalworking to hold dial indicators, and are also used in other fields, such as optics. Magnetic bases can assist the user with setting up a workpiece in a milling machine, surface grinder, or other machine tool. The vertical post and rod in a magnetic base connect using swiveling connectors, or snugs. This allows free motion of the arm so that the dial indicator can be moved into position on the workpiece. Many magnetic bases have a V-step, which is a V-shaped notch in the base for holding the base to arbors, shafts, and other cylindrical items. The magnetic base has a circular hole through the center. A round permanent magnet is inserted into this hole, and a handle or button is attached to allow the user to rotate the magnet. Rotating the magnet turns the base on and off as this causes the position of the magnetic field to rotate as well. In the on position, the iron is acting as an extension of the magnet, while in the off position, the magnet is acting as a keeper, preventing the magnetic field from extending through the base.

The L. S. Starrett Company was founded in 1880, originally manufacturing bench vises, squares, and other tools. They acquired other companies throughout the years, expanding their services into making precision measurement instruments and tools, such as calipers, micrometers, saw blades, and gauges. Starrett is headquartered in Athol, Massachusetts and has manufacturing facilities in Brazil, the United Kingdom, China, and other locations.

5This is what quality looks like.
By David Burrell
I've used several of these types of bases before and none of them have the quality that this Starrett base has. There is more quality in the knurling on the screw than in the entire unit of the others I have used. This unit is solid. There is not one piece of plastic on it. The rods are smooth and the connectors hold tight. The base can be mounted it many positions, even perpendicular to the spindle by using the angled ledge on the top front. Highly recommended.

5NOT an MP3 player - but in many ways, better.
By Blodwyn
Hey everybody - this is not an MP3 Player! It is a MiniDisc Player. Yes, you can "transfer" MP3s to it using the software, but really it is meant to record directly from CD to ATRAC - which is Sony's proprietary (and superior) compression algorithm. When you transfer an MP3 - the software first converts it to ATRAC, then copies it to the MiniDisc player. So doing the math - the music is compressed twice. If all you want to do is listen to MP3s - GET AN MP3 PLAYER!!! Using an MD player to listen to MP3s is kind of like buying a bunch of DVDs, then recording them to VHS tape and watching them on a VCR.

As far as the software is concerned - if you don't care about transferring MP3s - you don't have to use the SonicStage software everybody whines about! You can use the supplied SimpleBurner - which records CDs in your PCs CD-ROM drive to your MD at either LP2 (160 minutes on an 80 minute blank MD) or LP4 (320 minutes). The quality of LP2 is very near CD quality. You can also hook the unit directly to a CD player (remember those) using analogue or digital connections. When you do it that way - you can record at SP (highest quality - 80 minutes on an 80 minute blank MD) or LP2/LP4.

Why would you want an MD player vs. an MP3 player? If you don't have a bunch of MP3s, and all you want to do is make your existing CD collection portable - MD offers a cheaper, more versatile, and sonically superior alternative to MP3. Blank MDs are cheap (less than $2) - re-recordable, durable, and easy-to-handle. Individual tracks can be split into multiple tracks, re-ordered, re-titled, and deleted directly on the MD unit, or using the supplied software. This is very useful for students, musicians, etc. Can't do any of that w/ an MP3. Again - if you have thousands of MP3s - then get an MP3 player. But if you don't - you should check this out.

5Great little recorder
By A Customer
I had been researching mp3 flash and hard drive players, when I found out about the Sony NetMD minidisc players. This player has everything I wanted in a mp3 player: small size, expandable memory, am/fm tuner. One of the big selling points for me was the inexpensive minidiscs: they cost only [...] dollars apiece and provide up to 5 hours of music (in the LP4 mode). The player comes with software that allows you to rip music directly from a CD or copy from a hard drive. So far, I have been using it only to rip my CDs. I have read if you have mp3 or wma music on the hard drive it will take longer to load because the Sony converts files to ATRAC3.

NOTE: This player uses Sony's proprietary compression scheme for music files (ATRAC3). This player will not directly play mp3 or wma file format. Also, software has a check-in, check-out feature for music; you are allowed to copy or check-out a song only 3 times. If you want to copy more times, you have to check-in the song. This is some kind of copyright protection scheme to keep you from making unlimited copies of music.

1Misleading info in Amazon listing????!
By J. Mensch
This "review" is really a caution: the Amazon page on this item lists a microphone in the 'Accessories' category, yet a review states that no direct voice recording is possible, and the Technical info does not specify any input for a microphone.Amazon browsers beware!I believe older MD recorders did have line/mic inputs, but the newer "Net-MD" types may lack them.I gave this 1 stars because I had to choose something and wanted to get the browser's attention--I don't have one of these devices (trying to find one that will record live music via a microphone).
