2Great idea - but lots of problems!
By Scorpio69
I bought the NextVision 6 primarily so that I could watch TV on my brand new 22" IBM C220p monitor (which is way OUTSTANDING, lemme tell ya!). I toyed with the idea of getting a video card, but balked at dealing with potential software and picture quality issues. The NextVision 6 is a stand-alone unit, so it looked like a great alternative to simply buying a small TV (it is right about in the same price range as a 13" Sony).

The setup is relatively simple, however, the end result is very unpleasant. There is a special cable provided, which is designed to interface with your graphics card output and feed into the unit's RGB input. You then connect your normal VGA cable out of the unit's RGB output and into your monitor, thus establishing a pass-through. However, the resulting output signal is highly degraded and of such poor quality by virtue of this cable/pass-through combination that your computer graphics suddenly look like doo-doo. Forget the TV part, because you've just hosed your computer graphics!

Now, in my case, my IBM C220p monitor has dual inputs. So, I said, "Forget it!" to this whole pass-through business and I simply connected the unit's output to my IBM C220p monitor's second input. Unfortunately, the aforementioned special cable provided is not useable for this purpose. Just as well, since it's a piece of junk. So, I had to drop another $30 on a decent VGA cable to make this connection. The resulting TV signal was very acceptable (with the TV signal source being standard cable via coax), however I dunno if I would call it `high definition'. You cannot sit too close to the screen without seeing some sort of `digital smear'. Since my monitor is a 22", I can kick back on the bed and watch TV but this may be more of a problem with a smaller monitor or if you had plans on watching the TV from directly in front of your computer.

Anyway, I run my monitor at 1600x1200 resolution. The NextVision 6 touts 1280x1024 resolution. I tried different combinations of monitor/ NextVision 6 resolutions and found that if I kept my monitor at 1600x1200 and ran the NextVision 6 at 1024x768 I got the best picture. Why? Who knows. But you do have to play around with both the monitor/ NextVision 6 resolutions and the NextVision 6 brightness/contrast settings to really find the optimal settings. Patience is required!

The remote control, from which most of the functions are accessed, is, as others have noted, a pain in the rear. Some of the buttons respond to a lighter touch than others. To scan up/down through the channels you had better be able to squeeze this punk with all your might to get it to actuate! I have to hold it between my thumb on the bottom and middle finger on the top/button to apply sufficient pressure. I may opt to get a digital cable box in order to use it as the tuner/remote, which will leave the NextVision 6 to function simply as the means to convert the cable signal to a computer-compatible signal. Another expense - ugh.

A lot of caveats here, folks. Certainly, if I did not have a dual-input monitor, the NextVision 6 would have been returned as totally unacceptable. However, since I was able to get it up and running to a truly acceptable level via the procedure outlined above, I am well-pleased with the TV signal. Of course, I cannot watch TV while working on my computer since I have the unit's input on a completely separate monitor input from my computer, but no biggie. I just A/B between them with the monitor selector switch on my IBM. In the final analysis, I was able to accomplish what I started out to achieve, which was to watch TV on my IBM C220p monitor. Yeah!

Oh, one more problem: When I am not using the unit I have to unplug the audio cable (which runs from my sound card's audio-out to the unit's audio-in) because it generates a hum in my speakers. No doubt the shielding on this cable is poor - I may replace it with a higher-quality cable. More $!

As far as hooking up an external DVD player, I haven't tried it. I use Power DVD 5 on my computer, which is outstanding, so no need to use the NextVision 6 for that. If I want to play console games (X-Box, Game Cube), I'll stick with my 35" Sony TV. Maybe I'll hook up a VCR, which should work fine.

All in all, unless you have a dual-input monitor, plenty of patience and want to spring for a second decent VGA cable, forget this unit. Otherwise, as I said, I have achieved a very decent TV viewing experience on my monitor.

4Reasonable product for certain applications
By Lenny
I bought this to add television to my home theatre and overcome the lack of inputs on my Epson S1 projector(component video is shared with computer). This unit is designed more for monitors but I am using it for my projector. Certain functions work very well but others could use improvement. One great feature is that it can upscale video to a higher resolution. This can dramatically improve picture quality. Television looked very nice on my projector, but I also own LCD Monitor TVs and I was able to compare the built in tuner to the N6. The picutre from the N6 did look a bit sharper but somewhat dimmer. Personally, I prefered the built in tuner - but this product is something to consider if you want TV off your desktop monitor.

VHS tapes that play through the projector (and LCD monitor) composite port play all jumbled through the N6. Not a big deal, I will run a cable to the projector. On the other hand, playstation(composite) games seem a bit more stable through the N6. Progressive scan video(which the PJ can handle natively) looks as good or maybe better when sent as an upscaled RGB signal. Non progressive video looks similar to the projector, and is above average.

Overall this product is above average for the pricepoint and what I am using it for. The TV looks much better than what I was getting out of my VCR, and I also have one cable to the projector for my computer, composite, svideo , component.

3Not a viable alternative for HDTV
By A Customer
I bought this overpriced monster assuming that it would be a cheap alternative to an HDTV, as I play a ton of console video games and wanted to take advantage of the higher resolutions that nextgen consoles all boast about. Well, I am sorry to report that the picture quality on this particular unit makes console gaming on my Viewsonic G90fb monitor look washed out, oversaturated, and generally muddy when compared to my (...) TV, which incidentally cost me significantly less than the N6! So IS the resolution better? I cant really tell as I am so distracted by the generally cruddy picture quality... and yes, I DID get hd adapters for my consoles. Perhaps it is because the experience of sitting close to a monitor vs sitting back further with a TV doesn't lend itself to console gaming, but I must say I was very disapointed when I hooked this little sucker up and got it running. It's novel playing consoles on a computer monitor, but I find myself actually wishing it were a television instead. Caveat Emptor, dear readers... If this product at all interests you I would instead get the N5 for less than half of the cost of the N6 and just settle for S-video.

5My Family Loves It!
By MartyHansen
My wife and I were seeking a LCD-screen computer for my son's room. I introduced her to the Sony W-Series desktop - which is a big hit in Japan - and she was immediately impressed. She liked the clean lines and the keyboard which folded up to be even less obtrusive. The clincher for her, though, was the PC which was built into the back of the screen - which eliminated both the bulky tower on the floor -- and the messy cable cables streaming out of it.

The Sony W-series looks great. It doesn't clutter up my son's room which, heaven knows, is already cluttered enough as it is. He enjoys doing his homework - and playing computer games - on it. The sound from the built in speakers is excellent. And the wide-screen display is wonderful for watching DVD movies.

The computer comes with four USB and two FireWire connections. Since the mouse connects via USB, these ports fill up quickly. (I plan to use a compact Linksys USB hub when I run out.) The FireWire ports are also of the smaller four-pin variety. Since most of my FireWire devices use the six-pin plugs, I needed to purchase a six-to-four pin conversion cable from Belkin (who, like Amazon, has everything).

The W-Series also has a Memory Stick slot, which I use to transfer large files from my Sony Vaio desktop (which also has a reader), and amongst my home and office laptops, where I've installed Sony Memory Stick PCMCIA card adapters into all of them. The W-series also has a pair of LAN ports, which I don't use, and a PCMCIA card slot which I'll probably employ to add 802.11 b or Bluetooth capability later. For those of you (like me) who don't know how to open up the back of your desktop to add these features, being able to do so via a PC card slot is definitely a plus.

Since the keyboard is attached to the bottom of the screen, the LCD sits a little lower on the desk than a free-standing unit, which my son doesn't notice. It's much like using a laptop (which was our other alternative) - but with a desktop's easier-to-use keyboard and mouse! The mouse, incidentally, is of the optical variety, so tracking is extremely smooth and accurate. And the screen tilts down slightly, which is nice when I want to watch DVD movies - while sitting in an easy chair in front of it!

The Sony W-Series computer is a big hit. I can tell because my son enjoys using it; and my daughter (who is a few years younger) wants one too!

If space efficiency - and aesthetics - are important considerations for you (as they were for us), the Sony W-Series might be just the ticket. My family loves it!

5Well equipped, but lacking expandability for the super-geek
By Gadgester
The PCV-W20 is one awesome integrated desktop. Sure it's pricey, but you get a lot of features plus Sony's award-winning styling. The widescreen 15.3" (measured diagonally) LCD is beautiful and has excellent contrast ratio. The CPU is actually 1.8Ghz, not 1.9 (which doesn't exist), but it's still fast. Sony apparently optimizes the system so it feels as speedy as a 2.4Ghz Dell Dimension 2350 or 4500.

Unlike most other one-piece PCs, this one has all the ports loaded: three USB 2.0 ports (but one already taken by the optical mouse), two 4-pin i.Link/IEEE 1394 ports, one line-in port for hooking up an audio input source (e.g., a portable CD player or MP3 player), two PC Card slots, and one Memory Stick slot. Modem and ethernet are built-in, so you can surf web either way you want. You also get a DVD-ROM/CD-RW combo drive, but no DVD burner.

The W-series is really designed for family users who don't need to tinker with the system, so the biggest downside for us geeks is that you can't expand the system easily. For example, you can't put in a bigger hard disk, although you can get an external USB 2 or IEEE 1394 hard disk, or use an IDE hard disk with an external enclosure kit (e.g., ADS Pyro). You also can't upgrade the graphics card, which means if you are into the latest 3D games, you are out of luck. And you can't put in an internal DVD burner; instead you'll need to get an expensive external one (usually at a one-hundrd dolr premium).

Specs aside, the W20 is a pleasure to use. The keyboard does suffer from Sony's annoying policy of doing away with the insert/home/delete/... keys, and the arrow keys are cramped with the main keyboard which makes them hard to use. But that's about the only gripe. As mentioned before the system is speedy, and Sony bundles the system with a generous offering of software titles. The user experience is very positive, so if you can afford it, this is a highly recommend system for your home.

5Bought used, and still fantastic!
By Dragonsgrrl
I just got this computer yesterday, and even though by today's standards, 1.8 GHZ is pretty slow, you can't tell! Of course, I'm not one of those that has to have the latest in computer technology. That being said, I am in love with this computer! I also own a standard desktop computer (also a VAIO) and I can see myself using this one more often. I love the screen, and the fact that the keyboard folds up into the screen to save space (and keep my cats off the keyboard!) It is so easy to hook up; it took me a total of 5 minutes, and I was online and ready to go! All in all, this computer is a fantastic buy, it's great to look at, and is perfect to have around as a second computer (for when your husband won't get off of his computer game). Granted, you can't do any major gaming on this, but that's not why I wanted it anyway.

5there are other things on the shelves worse than this doll
    By A Customer
I don't understand why so many people are saying that Midge is inappropriate for children. Since when is a pregnant woman inappropriate? Pregnancy and childbirth are a beautiful and natural part of life. Everybody gets here the same way so why are so many parents trying to shield their children from it? There are pregnant woman everywhere you go. It is natural for little girls to want to play Mommy and this doll is perfect for that!Midge also shows that a girl can grow up to "just" be a mommy if that's her goal. Just because little girls play with a pregnant doll does not mean they will become teenage mothers. It is a parent's job to teach their children about sex education and morals, not a toy's job. To all those people who find Midge "disgusting" - GET OVER IT!!

    5Perfect
    By Love2Laf
I love this doll. I have long been frustrated that Barbies have little to offer other than a beautiful figure and an unrealistic slant on womanhood. This doll is a real woman. My daughter watched my son's birth when she was 2. She loves this doll, and it takes the focus off of looking like Miss Universe, and puts it onto the beauty of motherhood.

    5Has the world gone mad?
    By Geta Grip
What is the controversy with this doll about? I just don't get it. Women have babies. What is the problem here? Again, naturally speaking (evolutionally speaking), women have babies...There is nothing dirty, mad, or yucky here. One woman wrote that her little girl thought a pregnant Barbie was "odd". Maybe the adults around her had something to do with that. Really, this controversy is quite scary. Enjoy the doll or simply leave it on the shelf if your child is not old, bright or reared enough to handle it.

    5Well made, extremely good value!
    By Bob H
This was surprisingly and refreshingly high quality for the price. It was easy to put together, looks great, and very solid and strong. I've purchased other cardboard versions of literature sorters, paid about the same price, and 1 year later the thing was sagging and falling apart. This one is way better. The frame and vertical pieces are made of thick decent-density particle board, strong enough that you could easily stack another unit on top, and the horizontal pieces are hard press-board that are not likely to warp. This is the best quality sorter I've seen that didn't cost $300-400 or more. I will definitely be buying another one of these for the office.

2Good product, but not good for classroom
    By Alexis Brown
I do like this product, however for my needs, it is not sufficient. I am a first grade teacher and the major downfall with these mailboxes is that the the slots in which the paper is to go into is in no way secure. They are propped up by four little metal pegs and are easily knocked off the pegs by my students when getting their papers. They then have a difficult time putting them back on the pegs. I also feel the black plastic strip where the labels are supposed to go is way to small. Not even the labels that come with the product fit well on the black plastic strip. My product was also a little nicked in places due to delivery. One wooden piece had the corner snapped off. I was able to call customer service (Discount Office Items) and they sent me a new piece with no problem. After spending at least $100 dollars on this product, I'm sad to say I will go back to using my cardboard Classroom Keepers mailboxes that were actually perfect for the job!

3Wish the shelves were a smidge wider
    By Mainiac
(Note: I'm not sure why they changed the picture. I got the "oak" version, which is faux woodgrain.)This is not wood; it's laminated particle board, but hopefully you've realized this. The shelves are composite. The back is cardboard. Overall, it's not bad.Pros:1. It's plenty solid.2. It "blends in" with the actual wood things in my office and I find it visually inoffensive.3. The shelves sit on little pegs, and it's easy to remove shelves if you want larger compartments.Cons:1. The shelves should be half an inch wider. This is a real bummer to discover, and the reason I'm writing the review. There are plenty of envelopes that hold 8.5x11 paper that are wider than 9 inches. (Labels to go in the computer printer are my immediate example. Ditto for our inter-departmental routing envelopes.) These don't even fit diagonally, unless I remove a shelf. Manilla folders also do not fit (the tabs stick out too far, causing the whole thing to bend).More Room for Improvement:1. If they put more holes in the sides, the shelves would be adjustable height.Bottom line:This is definitely "better than nothing" for me and has helped me with a clutter problem in my office. I'm glad I got it. But I'm also disappointed with the shelf widths.

These are great for the classroom, which is what they are being used for. I like that the shelves are repositionable, every so often the kids will pull one out when grabbing their papers in a hurry. Overall I really like them and they have survived the school year with no marks of wear. Over all, I'm very pleased!

    4great literature organizer
    By tasha6374
As a teacher, I use this literature organizer as a mail slot for student work. I love how it is shorter than most other literature organizers. It is very professional and was easy to assemble. It is extremely sturdy as far as the frame and the individual pieces that make each slot...It is not cardboard! The covers on the front edge of each slot do stay on and for the most part stay in the organizer. However, the one thing that I wish could be better is the fact that the papers don't easily slide out of the slots due to the covers on the front edge. We have about 10 papers each week that are sorted into individual slots. Occasionally, the bottom of each slot tilts or falls when papers are being taken out. I would still purchase the product as the pros outweigh the cons.

5Buy it for emergencies, use it everyday (Updated 2 years later)
    By clickz4
From reading the other reviews, I see most people love this radio, but some dog it. They're both right. Your level of satisfaction with this radio will have more to do with your buying motivations than the product.Grundig has a well established reputation for making fine products. If you are a shortwave enthusiast who is looking for a good shortwave radio, sadly I must admit that you need to keep looking. The tuner is iffy (by your standards) and it does not have the 'Grundig Feel' of their more expensive products. But notice Grudig calls it an 'Emergency Radio,' not a shortwave radio. If you want something for peace of mind -that you will never be caught without a radio because of dead batteries- then this is a great product. I live in a hurricane zone and every time there is a storm approaching, all my friends wait in long lines to buy batteries. I know I'm ready 24/7. As an added bonus I'll always have a flashlight with me. (which is more handy than I would have guessed)(Here is the kicker-) If you want an emergency radio AND you like to listen to the BBC or Radio Canada every once in a while, then this is definitely the product for you.I've had mine for a year and a half and I use it at least 3 times per week. The best way to describe the tuner is "credible." It can pick up all the big name stations, even indoors, but it is not stunning. The tonal quality is acceptable but I'm usually listening to the spoken word and not music. (I have an iPod for that ;-)I bought it because I wanted a cheap shortwave. The fact it had a crank and a flashlight was gravy at first, but it is more and more important as I use it.Some notes about the battery:You'll never turn the hand crank enough to fully charge the internal battery. I have a fancy NiCad charger so I charged the battery fully and it lasted 6 weeks of near daily use during Gulf War II. (I'd guess 120+ hours, I was amazed) Problem is, your arm would fall off before you got there. Even if you don't give it a full charge, I find the cranking to listening ratio pretty good. But do what I do- I run it on NIMH AA's and it lasts for weeks. I never pay for batteries but I never have to crank it either. (unless the batteries die)And a final thought on durability which some people discuss.I've dropped mine several times even once from about 6 feet up while I was painting. I have one scratch on it but other than that, it really does look much like the day I bought it. The case is still tight and the controls firm. I give it to my 6 year old nephew and he cranks for hours with no ill effect. I'd say durability is quite good.I hope this review helps you get a feel for the radio. If your needs come even close to matching what this radio was designed to do, then I feel confident it will exceed your expectations in the long run.=====Update=======Well, 2 years -and Hurricane Katrina later- I'll never be without this radio. We left town 2 days before the storm and I brought it with me. At night I could pick up WWL radio (50,000 watt clear channel) from Memphis. My nephew (who I mentioned above) broke the antenna off for me so no shortwave for me any more but AM/FM works fine... That was homicide, don't blame the radio. It's now approaching 4 years old, I still use it weekly and it is still in good shape otherwise.BTW- I came back in town just a few days after the storm to rescue some friends' pets and help get some people out of town. I brought extra gas, extra water, 5 days of food and this radio. That probably say it all.

3Flawed Shortwave & FM but overall a very useful product

On newsgroups and message boards, this handy and compact little radio is being touted as a good choice for beginning shortwave listeners: but I would disagree. As usual for the current line of low-end Grundig products, the "single conversion" intermediate frequency design has resulted in serious image problems: in other words, you pick up a single strong station at two, or sometimes three, places on the dial: in the correct location at the intended frequency, plus one or two spurious images above and below it. In the crowded shortwave bands, this makes listening extremely difficult, as the images cause wobbling whistles and lots of interference (and make it hard to even know WHERE the radio is tuned.) In addition, the planetary tuning mechanism has really dreadful backlash: to tune in a shortwave station, you have to go past it, then back up and tune around until you *finally* get it centered. Then, the radio drifts and a few minutes later you are forced to do it all over again: maddening.AM (called mediumwave in Europe and much of the world) is more satisfying as the stations are not crowded together as much as shortwave, and the band is shorter so there is more spread from one end to the other: the tuning isn't nearly as critical. Selectivity is pretty good, and sensitivity is excellent. I have not noticed image problems that are as troublesome as in the SW bands.FM reception was disappointing; selectivity seems poor, and sensitivity rather low. Stations "mush" together -- if they can be picked up at all. Expect only the strongest signals in your reception area. The generator system works very well though a trio of new AA cells gives more output and slightly better sensitivity.I tried six units and found that performance varied slightly. One brand new radio had a weak set of batteries that would not charge correctly; another had extremely tinny sound that lacked fullness (surprising to me but probably due to a poor speaker or bad audio capacitor.) A couple of the sets weren't as sensitive as others. So quality control apparently varies somewhat. The unit I purchased is very satisfactory as a simple emergency and/or AM broadcast receiver, though not much useful for FM or shortwave. But it sounds a bit better than pocket sets, and definitely outperforms most of them in terms of AM sensitivity. (I am a retired broadcast station chief engineer in the SF bay area, with fifty years experience as a shortwave listener.)

    5Surprisingly good.

I bought this little radio as an emergency and camping radio a couple of months ago and let it sit. It is now the a couple of minutes to the Saddam's deadline (20h00EST 19 Mar 03) and I am listening to the BBC news. The state of current events inspired me get it out and put it through its paces with the results being pleasantly surprising. I picked up Madrid and BBC World Service on the short wave among other stations (lots of Spanish broadcasts). In fact, the amount of stations picked up in the 5800-6200Mhz range and recption is pretty good. While the performance isn't the same as my Satellit 400, the sound is pretty good. The reception is excellent on the FM band as well.

I like this radio's reception and perfomrance better than the Coleman generator radio. Also, the size is much more convenient than the Coleman radio.

I wish it were easier to find the AC adapter.
