5I bought this printer after giving up on HP
By Firebright
I went through a slew of hp printers. I experienced lousy, "outsourced" technical support, and had two printers fail in the same year. This on the heels of my friends brand new color laser fiasco, which was three failures in one year (also HP). They used to be the best, with printers like the 4050n and other tireless workhorses, but I think other vendors are now making significant inroads, especially in this middle ground space. You'll find HP laser printers to be profoundly expensive for what they buy, with high print costs, and low ram. The 1300 is a fine example of where HP has gone wrong.

So, we took the plunge on this 8420 (we got the "one up" D model, which includes duplexing -- works like a charm, and at about 1c a page (as the cost of paper) it will pay for itself quickly).

The upsides:

1) Very cheap toner. Especially the high yield. 6k pages for 90 bucks, which is more than any other cartridge we could find (and you get get those cheaper than 90 some places)2) Very convenient. You've no idea how awesome a 50 page sheetfed scanner with OCR actually is until you need it. ;-)3) Comes with a full toner cartridge. My hp's came with 1/2 full "intro" ones.4) Best-of-breed. For it's downsides (below), it really is the best you can buy for the money.5) It doesn't jam.

The downsides are:

1) It's a little slow to copy2) High end color scans are not that hot. A little flat. If you want high end color scans, drop 60 bucks and buy a Scanjet 5300c. The scanner is really designed for document processing, at which it excels.3) It's a little pricey to buy in. The high end models are overpriced for what they buy (duplexing for ~100 bucks, network for another 100-150). Yikes.4) The software is a little "clunky", but it works5) The warranty pretty much stinks (1 year). If you can get an extended warranty, it's a [really] good idea. With so many components, all-in-ones have that much more of a chance to fail, and they do. ;-)

Remember, inkjet printers are sold practically at a loss by their manufacturers (especially cheaper ones). They are designed to make up their money in ink cartridges. This is important when you are comparing all-in-ones.

Despite it's minor downsides, I'd highly reccomend this ot a friend. If you need something to get your business off the ground like we did, and don't want to spend a fortune or worry about being in constant IT mode keeping everything configured and working smoothly, this is the way to go. Faxing is a breeze, scanning is easy (50 docs at a time is a LOT btw), and printing is very high quality.

We combined this with a cheap bubblejet, and now we have the best of all possible worlds. We reccomend this route!!!

5This office machine is perfect for small offices
By Albert
For our small office of 6 people, we have been looking for an office machine that is easy to operate, reliable, and cost-effective. The four contenders are HP 3330 MFP, Canon D680 imageClass, Brother MFC 9700, Brother MFC 8820D. They are all 4-in-1/5-in-1 machines(Fax, Laser printer, Scanner, Copier, Data/Fax modem) priced below US$800. Brother MFC 9700 is cheaper but comes with a 14.4k modem and only 8MB memory and a smaller flatbed; as the result it faxes and prints slower than MFC 8820D. The remaining three candidates all have excellent "pedigrees" and are well designed and built. However Brother MFC 8820D won at the end for the following outstanding reasons:

1. The 'D' in 8820D stands for Automatic duplex copying and printing: It prints on both sides of papers seamlessly and effortlessly. It is not necessary to remove the paper tray manually (a really tedious process in other machines). Duplex "fax receive" saves 30% to 50% in papers by printing faxes on both sides automatically. Now one can have some break from the cost of receiving junk faxes. This feature can be disabled if one-sided printing is desired

2. 32MB memory: This is more than enough for holding a lot of copies and faxes. Very good for large unattended jobs. The best part about this is again about cost. No immediate need to spend more money for upgrading the memory as is required for Canon D680 (measly 2 MB).

3. PC fax software for computer data/fax needs.

4. Expandability for network interface.

5. Digital paper count to indicate the no. of copies made and faxes received: good for cost management and safe guard against potential abuse of the machine by employees for personal uses.

6. Excellent ADF (automatic document feeder): we have not had any paper jam so far.

7. Very easy to program and operate: simple to use for beginners and sophisticated features for users who demand more advanced functions.

8. Last but not the least is the cheaper cost for its toner on a per page basis.

There are only two minor drawbacks for us:

1. MFC 8820D's ADF/scanner does not scan a page from edge to edge. However this is true of all machines in this price range. Canon D680 omits the least at both margins. HP 3330 is the worst.

2. Large footprint. We had to relocate it to a different room in the office where there is enough space instead of putting it at a more convenient place where there is easier access. Nevertheless it's not too bad considering that it replaces 4 separate machines all at once. Besides it forces us to walk down the hallway and get some exercies!! ;--]

5great for small doctor's office
By A Customer
I played with the similar models from HP (3330), Canon, and Samsung at my local store. Brother seems most solid. Plus definitely has the best engineering pedigree. I think each model/year brother has gotten more robust. Don't trust the first efforts of the other companies.

In the office it's great. No jams, efficient ADF, fast and flawless laser printing, fast ADF copies too! Hope to get good toner performance based on others experience. Certainly they seem to be more fairly priced than the competetors drum/toner cartridges that all and unstated or mediocre capacities.

Very satisfied so far.

5Bosch Tool
By Quin
I bought my first Bosch hand drill many years ago. I still have it and the original batteries are still working fine. Based on that history I have bought only Bosch products and have been very satisfied with every one. This hammer drill did everything I needed it to placing anchors in red brick and concrete. I also like the interchangeability on the battery packs and chargers with the systems I own now. Solid tools!

5Tough, versatile, accurate.
By wormdrive
I bought the 500DV about 3 years ago and have used it everywhere for everything. I made tapes. I listened to Books on Tape. I used it with headphones; I listened to the integrated speakers. I played it in hotel rooms, airplanes, the desert, the snow, on long drives, while doing carpentry, while changing my oil. It's been dropped, sprayed with water, subjected to sawdust, dirt, and hundreds (yes, hundreds) of public library cassettes. It finally gave up the ghost after being dropped for about the fifteenth time (snapped one of the wires going to the drive motor--it's actually repairable, with a teensy soldering iron).Total maintenance performed: dabbed the playback head with isopropyl alcohol twice; blew on cassette bay to remove sawdust several dozen times. Dismantled once to put auto-reverse drive belt back on (it slipped off after I dropped the device onto a driveway, I think). It's got a speed control knob on the back, which is big fun to play with but eventually gets a strip of electrical tape so it doesn't keep moving when it's in my tool belt. The speakers deliver crisp sound audible from across a room and give your ears a rest from that unpleasant sensation that can occur from wearing headphones all day. I listen to my 500DV about 40 hrs. a week (I am a carpenter) and have become spoiled with its surprising ruggedness, reliability, and steady delivery of clear sound.Cons: Musical instruments sound tinny on playback, as the 500DV is designed for the human voice. It is a tad heavy when compared to its cheaper Walkman-like counterparts. It is more expensive than most voice recorders due to the external speakers, speed control knob, and overall ruggedness. The "PLAY" button kind of looks like the other buttons (dab some bright pink nail polish on it) and can be hard to find.

4Misconception of Reviewer "An Electronics Fan"
By A Customer
The only review of this recorder (Sony TCM-500DV) says that the recorder and appropriate adaptor "have been discontinued." According to Sony, neither is the case. The recorder is still available as is the appropriate Sony Worldwide AC Power Adaptor, their model number AC-E30A.

5Neat little mic system!
By Daniel Haworth
I got one of these mics in a lot of DJ equipment. I've used it for everything from live bands to school assemblies. The mic sounds OK. It's nothing fancy, and certainly doesn't feel as sturdy as some of Audio Technica's higher end products. But, for what it is, it's fine.I have two mics and one receiver, and I've found that the receiver isn't very happy if more than one mic is used at a time. I'm wondering if my set has been mixed&matched a little since the listing on Amazon here shows only one microphone.Overall, for a cheap mic, it's a good one. Audio Technica is a good brand and even on their lower end products like this, it shines through. The range seems quite good, being able to span a full sized gymnasium with ease, and just running on store brand 9volt batteries. In assemblies, I'm able to sit off to the side of the gym near the seating areas with the receiver sitting on top of my mixer, and the people on the floor being able to run around, talk quietly, SCREAM, sing, and even blow whistles and megaphones near the mic without any issues, just a quick finger on the volume slider. The mic its self is also very easy to use. There's a switch on the bottom with three positions: off, standby, and on.With no instruction, the leadership students have been able to take the mic from me, go out on the stage, turn it on themselves, do their piece, and turn it off when they stop talking. The output on the receiver does seem to be unbalanced. I've not seen any evidence otherwise. Which, is fine with me since it's usually sitting on top of the mixer anyway. It's a little plastic box, so a thick Monster cable can pull it to the ground pretty easily. All in all, for sorta non-professional stuff, it's perfectly fine, and I've been perfectly happy with it. I would recommend this product for use in small gigs, DJs, and schools.

5Perfect For Lead Singer in a Band
By F. J. Procaccini
I have been the lead singer in a band for about 6 years and I bought this wireless system about 5 years ago, it has yet to fail me. On stage it can become an annoyance to have mic cables all over the place, especially when you're a singer who likes to jump around or get the crowd into it. I have performed with the receiver about 50 yards away and didn't have any delay. For under $100 I would highly recommend this system. Although I go through great lengths to take care of my equipment, this mic has been dropped and beaten up yet performs like a pro. Also pretty good for recording too. No question, buy one.

4Great portable player -- but a little flimsy
By Jessica R. Costello
This is a great portable cd player -- one of the best I've tested -- but I think that it is a little flimsy. I abuse my electronics, and I like them to be durable. (Read: I drop my nice things quite often.) But the sound quality on this product is top notch -- and the headphones are very very nice. I also like the red rim (also available in blue). The button configuration is easy to use; all of them are in the right places. But I think the best thing about this player is the fact that you can use two different types of batteries! You can insert two AA or two AAA. There are different battery covers provided to accomodate these different configurations. What an awesome feature!

I highly recommend this product.

4Good-looking. Inexpensive. Intriguing operating method.
By Bob Zeidler
After some 15 years of use, my Sony Discman (of an early vintage, to be sure) bit the dust. While it was expensive when new (the price of my perpetually being an "early adapter"), by now it owed me nothing. So it was well past the time for me to find a replacement. It didn't take me long to decide on the Philips AX5210/5211 CD player (satin chrome with dark blue trim [AX5210] or dark red trim [AX5211]). I happened to choose the blue to match some of my other computer peripherals, but the models are otherwise identical. The player is especially attractive and slim, taking up little more than the diameter of a CD and the thickness of a CD jewel box on my desktop. The player works flawlessly and provides excellent sound to these modestly critical ears: I feed the output into both my Cambridge MegaWorks 210D self-powered speakers and my Bose TriPort headphones (both reviewed elsewhere at Amazon). The player has some functional and ergonomic strengths and as well a few minor weaknesses. The controls for starting, indexing, pausing and stopping the player are conveniently located on the top surface, which also includes a full display for indicating running time (something the old Discman did not have). Volume adjustment for headphones is conveniently placed at the front of the player, as is the output jack for headphones and/or speakers. But the latch for opening the cover is somewhat inconvenient, and there is only one output jack, requiring a "Y" connector if one is to feed the output to both headphones and speakers. "As packaged" (in one of the more infernal blister packs I've ever encountered), the player does not include a power supply, requiring the additional expenditure of about seven or eight bucks for a "universal" power supply. But it does include two battery covers, permitting one to use either AA or AAA batteries (in pairs) if one is so inclined. The operating principle-new to me and no doubt a consequence of the player being designed and constructed for wearing during activity-loads the signal into a memory buffer. The player will spin the CD for about 30 seconds, and then will let the CD coast to a stop while, for about 20 seconds, the buffered signal is fed to the output. This "start and stop" motion no doubt adds to battery life (not an issue for me) at the same time that it eliminates mistracking due to body motion while the player is being worn. Intriguing, to say the least.I consider this player to be excellent in performance (and style and small "footprint"), even though it was necessary for me to add to it the additional expense of a "Y" connector and a power supply to account for the use to which I put the player. Others who use only headphones and batteries will have no such problems.Red? Blue? It's up to you.Pick one. :-)Bob Zeidler

Just got it today this thing is awsome its really thin and lightweight the sound quality is exelent and the headphones it comes with are great they are the kind that go behind your head.I really like the design the buttons are in all the right places.Im only dissapointed about the durability the cover is a little loose and I dont think it has the repeat option and thats why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 stars.I also like how it looks and its some of it is red so thats pretty cool.

5Fantastic portable DVD player!
By David A. Tiangco
I just got this item and it works great. Sharp picture, good quality sound, and ultra slim design. Here's some additional info that may not be readily apparent from the item's description:

- The remote has a volume control, which I understand was not available on the previous 9" model.

- The unit DOES have built-in stereo speakers, but the sound is noticeably weaker compared with the included mini-tower speakers.

- The mini-tower speakers will only operate with the docking cradle and they are not magnetically shielded. Built-in speakers go null when unit is docked.

- Both the built-in speakers and the mini-tower speakers can distort when the volume is cranked (~85% of maximum), or if the scene has a lot of bass, but otherwise the sound is fairly good.

- The docking cradle has discreet RCA-type outs for left, right, center, left surround, right surround, and subwoofer. So it can do its own 5.1 and DTS decoding, or you can go digital optical out from the unit itself into a receiver with a decoder (optical cable not included). You can also go stereo analog out from the unit (cable for this is included).

- Video outs from the cradle include component video, S-video, and composite video. Video outs from the unit are composite video only and a special cable for this is included (mini-jack plug on one end and RCA plug on the other).

- This unit works great as a monitor for other equipment like camcorders. In fact, you can use the specialized cables as mentioned above and the unit's outputs instantly become the inputs when you hit the AUX button. Pretty cool!

- There is a spring loaded jog dial on the unit for fast-forward and rewind.

- The unit's main "joystick" pulses and glows neon blue making you feel like the proud owner of something super-tech and expensive. It is the only button on the unit that lights up. The buttons on the remote do not light up either.

- The screen tends to clop shut when closing it, so be careful with that. It does have some glued on rubber bumpers to soften the blow though.

- No case is included, but I understand Panasonic sells one for 9" portables. A sturdy custom piece of bubble-wrap is included that can act as a temporary case so you can take the unit on the go until you find a real one.

5A product finally worth it's price!
By Leon D Hughes
I owned a Panasonic DVD-LA95 Portable DVD Player and was very happy with it, with the exception of the screen resolution (432x234 DPI). I've passed it along to a family member. There were times when it was like watching a movie through a wire mesh screen. Needless to say, I monitored the internet for the next update. The Panasonic DVD-LX9 Portable DVD Player has a screen resolution of 800x480. The display on this model is EXCELLENT... after minor adjustments of the default settings. DVD movies displayed on this model are comparable to the progressive scan picture on a HDTV. Movies are now a joy to watch. The built-in progressive scan feature of this model is only available at the component video output terminal on the multi cradle/docking station. The optional battery pack (CGP-H501) used with the DVD-LA95 also works with the DVD-LX9. The DVD-LX9 remote control includes the ability to adjust the player's built-in speaker volume. A definite plus. The multi cradle/docking station makes it more practical to use the DVD-LX9 with a television at home while also ensuring that it is quickly available for unexpected road trips and/or travel... no wires to disconnect and wrap-up to take along. The DVD-LX9 has numerious features and capabilities that I will not address. The main purpose of the DVD-LX9 is to watch movies on the go, utilizing the built-in display... and it does a very good job at that and has an excellant display. I highly recommend this unit for home and mobile use.

4Wow!
By J. T Bourke
Awesome unit! I just purchased the Panasonic DVD-LX9 for myself for use while traveling (if you purchase one before March 26 of 2005, Panasonic has a rebate form at their website for a free carrying case and car/airplane adapter)....It is a great unit! I work in the television industry, and I like to have video that looks gooood! This unit does not disappoint!! The picture is incredible, and the colors are brilliant. With 3 weeks of ownership under my belt, the only complaint I have is that the battery supplied with the unit only holds a 2 - 2.5 hour charge. A bit frustrating when using it this past weekend to help keep our 16 month old occupied (with Baby Einstein DVDs) during a 9 hour car ride. A quick stop to my favorite chain electronics store, and $13 later I had a cigarette lighter power adapter, and we were good to go! The docking station that comes with the unit is nice but not really a necessitity...I have no complaints with that either, I didn't really even need it, but I was able to get the model with the docking station for less than the DVD-LX8. I'd give the unit 4.5 stars, but that isn't an otion.

5Great product
By Mary Ullman
I have always used Orange Glo Wood Cleaner & Polish for my stainless steel refrigerator front - as it takes off all the fingerprints and spots and is easy to just wipe clean for days afterwards. I could not find it anywhere in the local stores recently, - supermarkets, Home Depot, Target, etc., and was worried it was no longer available but when I looked on Amazon, there it was and it arrived within a few days!
