5Perfect Rice!
By Frugally Yours
The Zojirushi cooker (both our old and this new one) does a splendid job cooking white and brown rice to the right consistency if properly prepared. The stay warm feature is great! We can cook a full pot of rice and leave it in the cooker for a couple of days and it stays warm and fresh. [Of course, you need to be careful to use common sense precautions to make sure you don't cause an environment where bacteria breed (i.e., like using unclean serving utensils).] The price may seem a little steep, but since we will use it nearly every day for years (like to old one), it's well worth the price. We had used a 10 cup Zojirushi rice cooker/warmer for about four years until I damaged the nonstick liner by rinsing rice in it (oops!). When I contacted the company to see about getting a replacement liner, I was told it was $50 plus shipping! After an internet search, I found this 5.5 cup Zojirushi for a nominal amount more money. We eat a lot of rice - almost daily, but honestly, a 5.5 cup cooker is just the right size for a family of 4 to 6. (We had never made 10 full cups of uncooked rice in the old cooker.) My mom's the connoisseur of rice brands - her rice always comes out perfect each time. Also over the many years she's cooked rice - what use to take some time and constant watching on the stove to get the perfect rice, the cooker/warmer does very efficiently without the worry of burning the rice.As additional info for those who don't cook much rice, we use to cook white rice but now we cook brown rice. Took getting use to the switch to brown rice, but now we prefer it. We soak the brown rice for about 1/2 to 2 hours in water before cooking it and add a little more water than for white rice. (I believe the recipe that comes with the cooker says this.) It's not as difficult as I'm probably making it out. And, finally, you want to make sure you don't use metal utensils, abrasive cleaners, or abrasive scouring pads in the non-stick liner (or wash your rice in it!) to prolong its life.

5Excellent Rice Cooker
By Jag
This rice cooker has spoiled me.I have used different rice cookers, they just spilled starchy water all over my kitchen counter and rice always stuck to the pan.The lid locks tightly to hold in moisture, there is also a condensation cup to collect the water,so no mess to clean up after the rice is done. The best part is the rice never sticks to the pan and is perfect every time.It stays warm for a longer time, doesnt burn the rice or make it too dry.It works well of any kind of rice.cleaning the pan is a breeze.Clean it just as the manual says,it will last long. The retractable cord is an added convenience. If you have a family of up to 5,this serves well. This is a keeper.

1poor quality interior non-stick pot
By TJL
The non-stick interior pot started bubbling after a few months and chipping after 9 months. I do not know the consequences of ingesting the chipped metals. And the replacement interior pot costs over $56 (including shipping), with only 3 month warranty. From that, you can see how much confidence the company has on its products. I regret buying this rice cooker. Buy from a different manufacture!!!

5I never gave much thought to cooking rice...
By The Honourable Husband
I never gave much thouht to cooking rice until I moved to Japan--and acquired a Japanese spouse! But we're fussy about our rice here, and nobody would dream of being without a rice cooker. Rice cookers are actually pressure cookers, so the rice is always plump and perfect.I have the equivalent Japanese model (the same but with a different faceplate). I've had it for almost fou years and it's a real workhorse. Zoji is a value-brand here in Japan, specialising in small appiances, and known for being simple and sturdy. I would choose them over some of the big Japanese names, given the quality problems I've had with some of the other well-known electrical brands that make everything from TVs to elevators. The rice? Can't fault it. Nor can the other half, who's ultra-critical. Makes great oatmeal, too, but I can't get the other half interested in such exotic foreign foods.

4Really, really good rice.
By Aaron Contorer
I've made rice regularly for many years, using a steamer or using the stove. I thought I knew what well-cooked rice was. But when I eventually bought this machine, I learned what I had been missing. We are talking about wonderful texture and flavor. Yum.

The machine is very simple to operate (basically you push one button), and it'll keep your rice warm for many hours with no change in the texture, which seems remarkable to me. You can just leave it on, almost indefinitely, rather than putting your rice away and reheating it later. This is surprisingly convenient if you eat rice more than once a day.

However, you have to rinse the rice quite well or it will come out sticky. In addition, the machine doesn't come with instructions for brown rice, so I'm still figuring out the right method for that.

Also, the controls are confusing and hard to use -- an amazing achievement for such a simple machine. I could not make it any more confusing if I tried!!

My Taiwanese friend tells me that in most of her friends' households there, a machine like this is in use all day, every day. It's that useful -- assuming you eat rice all the time.

However, if you eat rice only occasionally, this machine is overkill. For a small fraction of the price you can get a Black & Decker Handy Steamer, which makes good rice (though not as good as this) and is just as easy to use and more versatile. So do you really, honestly, want a single-purpose rice machine, considering the cost and the space to store it? If you really do, this one's a nice choice.

5Miracles in Technology - Perfect Rice
By Raymond Dobbs
I purchased this machine from a local cooking supply shop, after doing some online research. The person who sold it to me told me that it was useful for little more than making really good rice. As I found out from research - that is simply not true. 'The Ultimate Rice Cooker Cookbook' by Beth Hensperger and Julie Kaufmann (ISBN 1-55832-202-7) gives you excellent recipes that are wonderfullly suited to this device. It's the manual you wish you would have gotten with this device.

5Fabulous German Portable Stove!!
By G. Green
I love this stove. This stove cleans easily, & heats & boils fast. Also, it cools down pretty fast. There are two heating zones, one for small diameter pots and a larger area for big pans, etc. This range is light weight thus easily portable. Easy to use, yet incorporates the latest modern technology. Comes with two year manufacturer's warranty. I know it's expensive, but it's so nice looking...

1PHR Glass Ceramic Range by BroilKing
By Q. Wagner
Apparently I now need a new thermostadt control for my PHR-1. However, Broilking won't sell me the part. They only sell to distributors. They gave me the number to a distributor who I called (1-800-243-1290) but the distributor said they don't sell to the end user. Lovely. I then called back BroilKing and they were so suprised I couldn't buy the part I needed from ICS. Now I am some kind of unreasonable customer because I actually need a part for my portable cooktop. How terrible of me to need a replacement part. They said I can ship it back to them, but my warranty is finished. And it would cost me around $80 out of pocket to do this. Now, I am looking on the Internet to find this part. However, that is quite impossible since BroilKing has a name very similar to a BBQ company called Broil King. So, all I get is BBQ parts. I can buy a new stove for the price this will cost me to fix. I am refused parts by the manufacturer. I then looked into a Cadco cooktop, however, they are a BroilKing company (or vice versa). I will never buy from them again since I cannot get parts. Is this thing made in China??? They have the part I need and I'm sure it cost them around $2 for the part (or less). Enough said.

5Best Popcorn Cooker in the World
By WinstonLamber
Bought for TV room and accidentally learned secret for best Popcorn that PHR-1 does automatically. We'd built dream home with Granite counters and built in Microware/Convection Oven in TV room; we thought we could do without a stovetop by TV, but Microwave Popcorn is 3rd rate, so I regretted not having at least one burner, so while considering having granite craftsman cut hole in counter, I found PHR-1.It is beautiful. The Stainless steel is thick and solid. The glass looks like custom stove. I didn't know it was made in Germany until tonight (after 7 years), but why am I not surprised; it is like the Mercedes or BMW of Stove tops.Love the simplicity, PHR-1 just has one dial; it goes from 0 to 1000 watts and then jumps to 1500 watts. I tried to cook popcorn at 1500 watts but corn was chewy and while waiting for last kernels to pop the first ones would burn. I tried to cook at 1000 watts and Corn would start to pop, but poop out and first ones would burn and I'd have bowl of kernels. So by accident, I learned to put in oil and popcorn, turn it to 1000 watts and let PHR-1 warm corn up, then when they start to pop, crank PHR-1 to Full Blast. I am trying to teach relatives this trick, but how do you explain 1000 watts and 1500 watts on a gas stove on the phone?I have never cooked anything but popcorn on PHR-1 for 7 years, but it is one of my favorite things. It may cost more than cheaper models from China, but it is built to last and looks great. If a stove can't hit 1500 it won't perfectly pop corn.P.S. After the corn is popped microware it for 1 minute and it is extra crispy.

4Good news bad news....
By Sherry M. Lyles
It works as stated and the kids loved the Tigger and Pooh on the waffles. The only down side I found was, that the side that is Tigger was hard to fill without it over loading it. It dripped out the front and made a small mess. It was easy to use and every waffle did turn out nice and brown and ready to eat!!!

4Great for family, good for food
By Kerry
The iron arrived quickly. Our children were so excited. I was worried that more would want Tigger on their waffle instead of Pooh, or vice versa, but the makers are so clever that each square has one on one side and the other on the other, so that every person getting a square can choose which one they want, and feel like they have both. Our kids love it.The waffle iron works well. It cooks just a little slow, but evenly. The waffles are thin, which is good for kids. They end up being a little tough to cut. But they are so fun that none of us mind. This is a great waffle iron.

4BEST for sandwiches
By Manya
I had lusted after this little baby for some time and finally bought it when I found a great deal on it. It makes the most amazing sandwiches, which you can custom-tailor to your tastes. I also used it for a rolled flank steak, stuffed with mushrooms and cut into thick slices. Each slice cooked perfectly at medium heat, although like all steaks, it requires a watchful eye to prevent overcooking.

My experience with vegetables was similarly good. Peppers, onions, eggplant slices all cook in minutes with good result. I have not tried chicken breasts, but from reading the other reviews, imagine that the results will be similar.

One negative: fish can be a tricky business on this grill. I cooked an ahi steak for only a few minutes and it was overdone. I bought a stovetop grill pan specifically for fish after that (well, I confess I do throw a little bacon on it too from time to time).

I am quite satisfied with this panini grill, and love my homemade paninis. I found that a sliced kaiser or hoagie roll works well, as well as thickly sliced Italian or sourdough bread. My favorite sandwich?: thickly sliced bread, olive tapenade, roasted red pepper slices and sliced fontina. Who said heaven isn't right here?

4Grate Grill
By Cow
I've had this panini press for 6 months now, and use it at least twice a week. Works extremely well, as advertised. Easy to clean, and stores well, too. It gets verry hot unlike some countertop grills on the market steam the meat. Crispy well marked dinner and lunch entree's. Non-stick coating still shows no indication of wear. This grill looks snazzy too! Makes super panini; the recipes enclosed, (of which I've used 2) are a great guide to the world of hot pressed sandwiches. Next purchase, is a panini and bruschetta cookbook. Overall, very happy with this purchase

5Best Countertop Appliance I've EVER Purchased!!!!!!!!!
By A Customer
I love, love, love, love, love this Panini Grill!!! We just bought it two weeks ago and used it nearly every day last week and probably every other day this week and look forward to using it much, much more.

We paid the full price for it through Crate and Barrel (that was a mistake - I know better to check Amazon.com first) and it was well worth the full price, but the price it's offered for here is a great bargain.

I agree with another reviewer in that I think this is a much better quality grill than the George Foreman (which I don't own, but have used at my in-laws). It's sturdy, very easy to clean with the included tool, has a grease catch that can be thrown in the dishwasher, and to top it all off it's great looking and has a latch that allows it to be stored standing on end - I keep mine on my counter top for easy access.

Again, can't say enough good things about this great grill.

Doesn't matter if you're a serious cook, a weekend griller or a microwaver; this appliance is easy to use and with a little imagination you can make the greatest appetizers and meals.

This is one small appliance that won't be collecting dust in our home and I bet it won't in yours either.

P.S. Two great cookbooks I'd recommend to use with this grill:**Nancy Silverton's Sandwich Book: The Best Sandwiches Ever...****Panini, Bruschetta, Crostini: Sandwiches Italian Style**They are both available through Amazon at a competitive price.

By Joshua T. Miller
I have this sub in my Jeep, and it sounds amazing... there are better subs out there, but for the money, you just can't beat it. A word of warning, however, make sure you have enough wattage to push it, it is a 1200 watt peak sub, if you don't have enough power, it will sound bad, plain and simple.

4Pretty good, but not perfect
By Robert Wales
I received a new iPod 30GB for Father's day (Thanks Sweetie!). I've used about a dozen or so prior mp3 devices, and I have noted some issues that haven't been represented in any other review, which I wanted to point out to folks considering buying an iPod.

First off, it's a great device overall. 30 GB is a lot of space and fits my 500+ CD music collection fine. I think the battery life of 8-10 hours is great (my previous device, the Nomad Jukebox, had 40GB, but got 2 hours battery life if I was lucky!) and I like it's looks and size a lot. There are some mildly annoying UI issues but nothing I can't live with. The case, and most importantly the screen, scratch really easily, so you have to be careful how you handle it (it's small enough to put in your pocket--just don't keep anything else in that pocket!).

I'm a Windows user, and I'll add my report that the MusicMatch software that ships with the iPod is disgraceful. I loaded it on three different computers, (moving the firewire card around each time) and it never would transfer music to the device. Finally I downloaded an *older* version of MMJB and got music to transfer. Its own user interface is awful and I really hate that it makes you IMPORT all of your music into ITS library. It's clearly designed for the novice user, with no expert-mode features that accommodate folks like me.

But the biggest criticism I have of the iPod is something that Apple just plain got wrong. There is no support for building [persistent] playlists on the device. This really bothers me. It's apparent that iPod's designers had a built-in assumption that people wouldn't mind being tethered to their computers for playlist management and other things, but not everyone works this way. I tend to not hook my device up to a computer unless I have new music to download, which can be weeks. I really want the device to be usable indefinitely without a computer.

But there's one important thing you can't do very well on the iPod without a computer: Create playlists. Yes, you can add songs and albums to the "on the go" playlist, but there are some serious flaws with that feature's implementation: a) there is only one on-the-go playlist b) this playlist is temporary. It is blown away the instant you dock your device (why, WHY? This is such a brain-dead design choice it boggles the mind.) c) when adding entire albums to this playlist, the album order is not respected. They seem to go in either alpha or random order, I haven't figured it out yet.

This makes it tougher to use the device the way I want. I'd like to be able to string together either a list of individual songs or, more often, entire albums and listen to them. But the albums go into the playlist with the song order wrecked, which is annoying. And having to abandon a list I've already created to be able to create a new one is truly annoying. And it's heartbreaking that, after I've put together a really good mix on the device, it will be summarily discarded the instant I dock. I truly can't understand the rationale behind this one.

So on the whole, it's a good device, the best out there for its combination of size, capacity, and battery life. There are some annoying problems that might detract from your enjoyment a bit if you, like me, find album order important and like to create custom playlists anywhere you are. But even with those flaws I'm glad to own mine.

5Less battery time than older model but so well worth it! I
By A Customer
The new Apple 30 gig iPod rocks! I had a 20 gig but had to return it because it wouldn't recognize my laptop computer on a regular basis. The 20 gig is the exact same price as the new 30 gig model and the 30 gig comes with a new docking cradle and new touch sensitive design buttons that enable you to truly operate the ipod one handed. No moving parts anymore, the famous scroll wheel is still there and works very well enabling you to browse thru your music quickly. The new model also enables you to cue up songs on the go, unlike the older model which you had to make your playlists on the computer. The design is sleek and sexycrazycool. Plus 10 more gig of storage for programs or tunes compared to the old 20 gig model. They had to sacrifice a little battery life to make it lighter and smaller,(weighs less than 2 CDs) but you still get 8 hours of music on a full charge and 2 weeks standby. The warranty is one year on defects, after 180 days of ownership you are responsible for shipping costs. You do not want to drop this - it's basically a hard drive that buffers about 25 minutes of music so you don't experience skips when walking or moving. If you run or jog longer than 25 minutes, you don't want to use your iPod for that. I recommend throwing away the earbuds, though they did improve them noticeably and getting Sony's Fontopia earplug type for $ on Amazon. They are noise cancelling and extremely awesome with the iPod. I love the packaging of the iPod and now you don't have to select Mac or Win, whatever you plug it into it recognizes. You get the software for both OS, Music match for win and ITunes for macs. You need a firewire port or a USB 2 port for the fastest transfer. A lot of people have knocked the Musicmatch software but if you take the time to go through the tutorial it works fantastic and I have xPlay which everyone touts as the best as well, but prefer the Musicmatch to xPlay or ephpod, which is buggy (the beta is the only one you can download at present). Learn the Musicmatch if you have a Win pc and you will be able to do everything. The supertagging feature in Musicmatch saves time and comes in handy. By the way Apple's new music store charges only 99 cents a song, and though you have to have a Mac to use it, it will be available for us Windows users soon. the iPod is the cadillac of any digital music player, and don't let anyone tell you different - it's the gold standard that other companies are trying to beat, but they have a long way to go. The iPod sounds and works excellently and stores 7500 songs on the new 30 gig model. I quickly became addicted and it's well worth the investment if you like music and portability. I also recommend the Creature speakers by JBL (cool looking) and the Transpod automobile adapter and FM transmitter in one, if you dont have an automobile CD player, this is a great option for CD quality sound, and cheaper than a lot of CD players in luxury cars. I also like that you can hook up the iPod to your stereo as well, get one you wont regret it. The iPod may be expensive but for some of us it becomes a necessity very quickly, and if I lost mine I would immediately replace it without batting an eyelash - its that addictive and superior to other players. It's truly an awesome gadget and an excellent gift idea - anyone would be delighted to open this!

3Awesome product, if you can get it to work
By A Customer
I purchased the 30 gig Windows iPod the day it hit the market, blissfully unaware of all the problems encountered by owners of previous versions. My experience getting the thing working was a moderate hassle, but I'm happy to say that it's working great now, and it's simply the most incredible little machine! However, I can understand and sympathize with those who have had difficulty getting the software and hardware to interact. Apple definitely is not terribly interested in the concerns of Windows users.

As many iPod owners have experienced, the Musicmatch software for Windows is terrible. The software simply won't work with my Gateway PC (later I learned from an Apple drone, as others have pointed out, that the software is only confirmed compatible with Dell and Sony PCs sporting a specific Firewire card). That's unacceptible to advertise a product for the PC without making it crystal clear that it will only work with a limited number of specific machines. Apple should rethink their marketing strategy for Windows users, or figure out how to refine the iPod so it works cleanly with any Windows-based system.

However, the freeware product Ephpod came to the rescue. This is a simple to use, easily installed program that interfaces beautifully with the iPod on Windows, and does the job of Musicmatch perfectly. I've now uninstalled Musicmatch, and I've had no problems since. Ephpod manages the transfer of your music library effortlessly and cleanly.

Now that the iPod is up and running, I can't imagine how I've lived without it. I have around 700 CDs, and it's incredible to be able to carry around the bulk of my collection on such a small, inconspicuous device. The user interface is nice, it's easy to catalog and access your songs, and it fits right inside your shirt pocket. Simply awesome.

I have a few additional nits. First, the earbuds that come with the iPod aren't the greatest soundwise, so other headphones are recommended. Second, the advertised battery life is up to 8 hours, but I find the iPod drains the battery much more quickly. I'm hoping the Belkin battery pack will fix this problem. Third, the iPod consistently requires resetting for various reasons. The manual states that this resets everything to factory settings, but that's never happened to me, every time I reset, all my previous settings remain. Perhaps that's a function of using Ephpod, I'm not sure, but restting has never created issues for me (besides irritation). Finally, the touch pads for scrolling the menus, while nice, are a tad sensitive, and take some time to get used to. However, this is just a small annoyance, and, on balance, the touchpads are pretty slick.

I feel the pain of those Windows users that have struggled with iPod, but there is hope, perhaps, for those who persevere. Because of the issues that exist, I've rated iPod only 3 stars, there is lots of room for improvement. But now that I'm up and running, the resultant music-listening experience is definitely 5 stars.
