5Great printer for home or students
By M. Ryan
I recently purchased the Canon i560s printer in September of 2003. The Canon uses 4 ink tanks. As the inks are used up you only need to replace the color that is empty. This is much nicer than many other manufactures' setup where the cyan, magenta, and yellow tanks are combined into one print cartridge. The Canon replacement cartridges are also about half to a third (list price) as expensive as other brands. This could lead to a significant savings over the years and was, in fact, the primary reason I chose this printer.

While the specifications on Canon's web site for this printer list it as having no USB cable included, my particular model did come with a 5 foot USB 2.0 cable. Perhaps that is what distinguishes the "i560" from the "i560s". At any rate, the inclusion of the cable saved me a few dollars and the trouble of getting another cable.

The setup of this printer was a no-brainer. Just had to remove the packing material, install the print head and ink tanks, then install the driver. There is a "quick start" sheet that guides you through all this. I'd expect the average user to be up and printing in about 15 minutes.

The print quality is very good for text and excellent for photographs. Especially good photographs can be produced on the included sample pack (5 sheets) of 4" x 6" Photo Paper Plus Glossy. I would rate the quality of a photo print on par with the pictures you get back with regular film developing. The Photo Paper Plus even has about the same thickness and consistency as that from a film developer. If you take the output from this printer and drop it on the floor a few times, bend it, and wrinkle it slightly, it will be just like pictures coming back from bulk developers. It takes less than a minute (50 seconds in high quality mode) to print a 4x6 print. The colors are as good as I've seen on a 4-color printer and nearly as good as high-end 6-color inkjets. You have the option of borderless printing on any size stock, up to 8.5" x 11"

For day to day printing, back off the printer setting from high quality to either standard or draft. The latter modes print much faster. The draft mode quality is certainly decent enough for printing out email and the like. You'll want to switch to at least "standard" mode for printing out your resume or term papers. I tested a 30 page draft mode gray scale (black only) document and printed it with the following results: Time to start printing first page, 20 seconds. Time to print all 30 pages: 10 minutes, about 20 seconds per page. NOTE: the source for this document included only scanned 8.5" x 11" B/W images on each page, total file size 253MB.

There is a status indicator (in the printer queue status) that shows about how much ink is available for each color, so you'll know in advance when you'll need more. In the print driver you have the ability to set the printer to automatically shut off after several minutes of inactivity (user settable) and auto power on when you print again. There is a USB port on the front of the printer to directly print from supported digital cameras - Canon Bubble Jet Direct compatibles only. This would be handy if you want to print out a quick snapshot without bothering to boot your computer first.

I've seen comments in other reviews that the paper trays seem flimsy. I believe they will hold up fine if not subjected to undo abuse.

This printer was just released so it remains to be seen how it hold up long term. However, it basically is the same as the Canon i550, but faster. I would expect it to hold up as well as the i550. From what I've seen, the i560 is about 30% more expensive than the i550. For that relatively small amount, the i560 is a good investment considering its faster print speed.

************************

Update:

After a few weeks of use, I have the following comments to add:

Printing a test document that is about half text, half color screen shots, 102 letter size pages took 16 minutes 20 seconds in draft mode. Average speed: 9.6 seconds / page. Text looked fine, graphics are quite readable, but solid colors have a noticeable screen pattern to them. Same document in standard mode took 32 minutes. Average speed: 18.8 seconds / page. Text was very good and somewhat better than draft mode. Graphics were noticeably much sharper. Printing a 8 x 10 inch color photo on plain paper gave the following results: Draft mode 18 seconds, output looks a bit fuzzy (comparable to inkjet's best modes a couple of years ago) also some slight banding. Color is a bit weak, but plenty good for school projects for example. Standard mode took 35 seconds, and was again much better than draft mode. Standard mode skin tones are a bit pink. High Quality mode takes 1 minute 34 seconds per 8 x 10 print. Again, this Canon excels at printing photographs and even on plain paper the output is quite good. By printing on special glossy photo paper, it is as good as I've seen from a four-color printer. Plain paper tends to curl when using it to print photographs.

Overall I'm still very pleased with this printer. Though (as with virtually all printers) the average print speed is much slower than claimed on the box, it's pretty fast for an inkjet. (I was able to get about 20 b/w pages per minute in "custom 5" mode, but the print quality suffers greatly.) For day-to-day printing, I leave the printer in draft mode for speed and ink savings. The above-mentioned 102-page document looked good enough in draft mode for use and as a bonus, draft mode is basically twice as fast as standard mode. I've currently printed a bit over 500 pages (about 20 were large 8x10 inch photographs). When printing photographs, the special photo paper is expensive, but well worth it. The three ink tanks for color are still about half full, the black is just about ready to be replaced. Also, I mentioned above that Canon includes a printer monitor that has a graphic display of the remaining ink for each color. Unfortunately, I believed this was how it worked. In reality, it shows all the inks full until one of the ink tanks is nearly spent, then displays that ink as low level. Upon more closely checking the documentation, it is mentioned that the display will only show when the ink is at a low level.

5Economical to use
By citan-uzuki
I bought this printer back in October of 2003. So far, this Canon has proven itself to be very fast, reliable, and economical. There is an option to use "draft" mode for the purpose of conserving ink. This is a great feature to have if you print a lot of text, like I do. The black ink cartridge is also relatively inexpensive. I bought this particular printer because I print a lot of text. My main criteria was keeping the cost per page as low as possible. I rarely print photos, but the few that I have printed on Canon's paper looked very nice.

I like the design of the printer. You can fold the paper holder in the back forward and it will act as a dust cover to keep the inside of the printer clean. You can also close the front of the printer as an added measure to keep the inside free of dust. The i560 is a little bit more expensive than comparable printers from other brands. However, I believe that the lower cost per page will more than make up for it in the long run. There are individual ink cartridges. And the ink cartridges do not have a smart chip built into them. It might be possible, although I have not tried it, to refill the cartridges yourself if you can find the right ink. However, I think the cost of the ink cartridges for this particular printer is low enough that I would recommend buying only the genuine Canon ink, that way you can eliminate most of the problems that people experience with generic or refilled ink cartridges. I was told that a lot of problems that people have with their ink jets are due to using generic or refilled ink cartridges.

5BEST FULL-FEATURED COLOR INKJET. PERIOD.
By Shashank Tripathi
If you are looking for a desktop printer (not the portable ones such as Canon's i70) then you just cannot get better than this. I include Epson's PhotoPlus 2200 and HP's PhotoSmart 7960, both of which are great printers but Canon wins hands-down in terms of ink longevity, photo quality (on professional photo paper,) and price (you can get deals for 85 USD for instance.)

The printer flies with B&W text, e.g., while printing websites off the web browser. The setup is breezy and hassle-free. With PictBridge built in, will connect directly to your digicam for printing on paper -- no need to transfer the file to your computer, then print from Adobe Photoshop etc.

For a home printer, given that the Epson, the HP and Canon are more or less the same in picture quality, the most important thing I have realized is that I need to keep ink cartidge replacements in check. Canon blows its competition out of the water in this respect.

And that's for the maintenance costs. Even for the upfront costs, this printer is unmatched either by Epson's 2200 or HP's 7960.

Highly recommended if you are looking for a full-featured home printer.

4makes excellent ice cream
By J. Rossi
I was so excited to finally receive this ice cream maker in the mail that I did it all: I make sorbet, frozen yogurt and ice cream. All came out very well. Note: eat the frozen yogurt immediately as it becomes very hard in the freezer and looses the smoothness commonly associated with frozen yogurt. I really enjoy having the two bowls. I've made two separate batches of desserts as well as a double batch. My freezer is stocked and I've never had so many wonderful choices of frozen dessert!

5Best ice cream maker on the market!
By Andy
This machine is PERFECT, it makes ice cream perfectly. I've tried other brands of ice cream machines, but this by far is the best. Right out of the box it made perfect ice cream, I am impressed. The quality of Cuisinart is superb. The cost of this ice cream maker is quite a value. Thank you for producing a quality product that does EXACTLY as you state that it will. I will try making yogurt and sorbet next. Thank you

5Very Pleased-Great Appliance
By Karen K. Pugh
This appliance was larger than I visualized but it has worked great, is easy to use. I wish I had more recipes to try for the holidays! It has a sleek attractive look and is very well made. The concept of freezing the tubs compared to the old crank and salt method is so convenient. Don't touch the tubs with bare hands or you will get freezer burn!

4Overall a nice laptop for around $1100
By A Customer
... did not really review Model 2681CU1 as shown on this website. This models comes with Pentium 4 -Mobile 1.8 Ghz, 256MB Ram, 20GB Harddrive, CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive.

Like the first reviewer said, the 20GB drive should really be called 16GB drive, and in reality, because IBM reserves about 4GB to store recovery info, leaving you with about 10-11GB of hard disk space you can use, so if you really need a lot of hard disk space, beware that instead of 18.6GB, you'll only be getting about 10GB.

Boot up on my machine takes about 1 minute with PC cillin Antivirus running, (booting to Win XP Home) so if you are used to 20 sec bootups, this machine will be slow to you on a bootup. However, once all of the programs are loaded, the computer performs pretty fast. Also, please note that the Hardrive is about 4200 RPM, so replacing the Disk for a higher RPM's will shorten the boot up time.

IBM does not provide a lot of software, I believe I only had Norton AV 2003, PC Doctor and Adobe (among others). You can type the Model number in IBM's website and get the exact detailed specs of what exactly comes (and does not come) with this laptop.

What I like is that the Norton AV and all other applications do NOT load automatically. You have to go to START--> Programs --->Norton AV 2003 and it will start installing Norton AV 2003. My previous laptop had all of the software already preloaded, which made it a little more painful, because you ended up uninstalling a bunch of useless programs you did not need.

The laptop's case is relatively sturdy and appears like it can take the ocasional bruising without major impact.

Also, the BIOS on this laptops comes configured to MAX BATTERY mode, which means that if you are booting from the battery (i.e the AC adapter is not plugged in) your CPU Speed Step will keep the CPU cycles to 1.2Ghz maximum even if your power options says "Always ON". Setting the power setting to AUTOMATIC (in BIOS) will fix this.

BEFORE YOU ADJUST BIOS, call IBM tech support to make minimize your chance for errors.

I was impressed with the quality of IBM tech support. I 'd say that I got a live person within 2 minutes and the tech support was somewhere in the US, as opposed to overseas.

Battery life seems to be close to 2.5-3hrs, though I have not had a chance to test it out fully. When fully charges, the battery indicator says that 3 hours is left.

Beware that this laptop does not come with a floppy drive.

I think that the reason this Laptop costs $1100 is that there are Pentium M chips that are out, replacing P4M's.

Oh, and last thing, I have IBM T23 at work and found that the ultrabay drives used with T23 are compatible with R40's (all except R40e) drives. Check IBM's website for verification. ...

5Nothing cheap about this
By scott_from_dallas
Sorry to break the news to the previous reviewer (please -- you really have to use a product more than one day to give a competent review), but there is nothing cheap about this laptop. Perhaps he had it configured with a little less power, but mine works as well as any laptop I've ever used.

This is my second laptop, but the first one was a small 486 I bought because the size was cool. Now, THAT one was cheap. IBM has made the best laptops and have the best service. The only question for me was initially, whether I wanted to pay for it, and then, which one do I get. Mine is configured with a 2 gig chip, a 40 gig HD, and 512 Meg of RAM. Please don't skimp on the RAM or you will wonder whether your system is slow.

It came complete with Windows XP (which I don't care for) and I had to reconfigure everything so it looks more like Windows 2000, which I have on my other desktops. I use the laptop for surfing on wireless internet connections -- both home and away, writing letters and other documents, doing some financial spreadsheets, and will soon be doing some film editing work. The trackhead (whatever its called) works MUCH better for me than the simple trackpad. But the pad is there, and you don't have to use the eraser shaped head in the middle of the keyboard if you don't want to. I don't remember hitting the head and moving the mouse when I typed the letters "h" and "g" (or whatever two keys it is between) so if you don't like it, it should never interfere with your work.

The screen is great! Big enough to have your desktop arranged like you like and plenty big to watch DVDs. The CD/DVD tray comes out, and feels somewhat flimsy, but you shouldn't have a problem taking care of it. On the left side are the various inputs, including (at least on mine) USB, firewire, and s-video. For you multimedia types who want a PowerBook for creative tasks but need a PC to do real work on, don't worry -- the Thinkpad has what you need. I considered a PowerBook and might have actually bought one (even though I'm firmly grounded in the Windows camp), but the prices were just way too much, and I would need a boatload of additional software for the Mac. While your emotional side might miss a PB (Apple does have a knack for appealing to the emotion), the logical beast in you will realize the TP has what you need.

The unit will, like every other high powered laptop, get hot on bottom. Mine doesn't create much of a problem. When I'm using it on my recliner, I put a pillow under it and I am fine. When using it on a table or desk, there is no issue.

Battery life on every portable unit is always disappointing. I've had my TP since March and have used it some, but not a great deal (once or twice a week on average, but lately increasing). I'm at a little more than three hours, and there is an indicator that clearly gives you an idea how much time you have left. If you fly cross country or longer than 3 hours and need all that time to work, you will need multiple batteries.

Finally, I haven't noticed any pixel loss on my screen. The unit is solid enough to take most anywhere. While I treat all my equipment well and don't dropkick anything, if you are a bit rougher on your stuff than I am, I don't think you will need to worry. But don't take this review for any advice on how the IBM will work if mistreated.

3All or nothing
By A concerned customer
I bought this for our office as a way to give our folks the ability to cook various things for lunch. It has met that goal, and it has been great to have around. I was worried that it wouldn't produce the kind of heat that a regular stove would, but it does just fine!My one complaint and it is a significant one, is that it doesn't really have a medium heat setting. The dial covers the range but the heat it actually produces is either very, very hot, or hardly anything at all. I don't know if that is a quirk of just my unit or if that's a typical problem people face. That is a big enough flaw, to me, however, that if I bought another one, I would try a different brand.

5Best One Out There
By Jon Jasper
I can't say I've literally tried or tested every counter-top buffet range there is, but this one's construction is clearly superior to all competitor's products. I hesitated - Broil King? Who are they? - sounds like some cheap, discount store brand, but I bought due to the all-steel construction because all the others, made largely out of plastic, seemed seriously cheesy to me. This unit is genuinely solidly built out of all metal, nicely chrome plated with nice quality controls. It works well to boot - like a good quality stove-top. You really get a full range heat control. I use mine at holiday time when my gas range is suffering from no vacancy. This will gently warm things without burning when set at low - a true test of the quality of the unit. Cheaper units "look" like they have full range controls but in fact, you get off and screech. Thanksgiving can be ruined if your mashed potatoes "warming" on your extra burner burst into flames because the "low" setting was mostly wishful thinking on the manufacturer's part. An excellent unit - a bit of an investment, but definitely worthwhile. I only use it twice a year, but will never regret it.

3Quick, hot as heck, and came with broken temperature dial
By Mateo
Keep in mind I am comparing this with a Rival brand (the actual brand, not just the word) solid hot-plate double burner that recently broke, one that sells on this site in fact. This thing is basically a two-up of the the hot-coil electric ranges I grew up with in the 70's when gas ranges weren't used as much. The coils get red-hot, when I first got it I tried boiling some water (uncovered pots) just as a test. The smaller saucepan (clad-copper, Revereware) w/ 2 cups water (we're talking Top Ramen here, folks) boiled so fast I was amazed; it really wasn't that much slower than straight gas at med-high. The larger pasta pan took longer, obviously, but it's a heavy Calphalon aluminum pot so it takes a while to heat up anyway. It's also bigger than the coils so that takes longer, but even so, the thing came to a roiling boil pretty quickly. Cooking pasta at a really rolling boil, I'd probably half-place a lid on the pot to keep it really going, but nothing like dealing with the Rival brand.I'm sorry I didn't actually time them, but suffice to say, with the Rival brand appliance I had to use pot lids half-cocked to get water to boil, which would then boil over when the water hit the covers. Here's the BAD: The next day, I was cooking some eggs and using just the left burner. I noticed the other (right) burner was warm. Not hot, just warm. The temperature dial was definitely turned to "off". I tried turning it to "off" again, and guess what, it heated up to a red-hot glow as if it were on "high." I turned it to "off" yet again and it just went warm. However, I burned my thumb badly when I reached to grab the egg pan, not noting the other burner had gone red-hot again. The dial was STILL at "off" on the right-hand offending burner. My thumb has blistered and already popped, it's pretty nasty. So I unplug the unit, do a few tests, and find the right temp. dial does not give the usual "click" that thermostat-controlled temperature dials like that do when they turn off and on (for instance, when a working one is set at "medium" and the thermostat determines the temp has fallen about 25 degrees, it makes a clicking noise when it kicks back up to medium. They're not exact, these electric appliances, just like a toaster oven does the same clicking thing. For a final test, I simply plug in the unit w/ both switches definitely set at "off." Mr. Left is cool as a cucumber, Mr. Right is warm or red hot, depending on mood I guess. My point is it's a problem that replicates over and over, not a one-time or "stuck" thing. The unit is spotless, BTW, it is only 4 days old.Have patience, I'm finishing up. Like I said, I've only had this for 4 days. I would LOVE it if not for the devil-influenced right-hand burner. I of course called customer service at BroilKing (NOT toll-free, BTW, and the same phone # for all of their departments)(which on the recording you'll find was formally "something-something" and maybe even another "something else"). The first two days it's past 2 pm my time and they're closed on the east coast, what can I say, I was working and couldn't be on hold for an explanation, RMA, whatever. Today, Fri. May 28th, they're CLOSED for Memorial Day. That's cool, I expect that on Monday the 31st, but I guess they decided Fri. would be good to take off too.So I have this great piece that works with a terrible flaw. I'm sure it'll be fixed one way or another, the only thing I pause at is the warranty states that it's my duty to pay for cost of shipping and return freight as well as shipping insurance. THAT SUCKS. The thing arrived broken (it came from the CHEF site, BTW, though they have nothing to do with the manufacture). Hopefully when I can actually talk to a live body almost a week after I got it they will take care of the shipping costs as I really want this thing to work as advertised, it's good if it's not broken, if you know what I mean!

5You get what you pay for-but beware of limitations
By Telstar
I bought the Toastmaster Eclipse burner and replaced it every year since something always went wrong. This burner is a marvel. The heat control is incredibly precise, from just keeping something tepid or warm to full-blown raging heat.Do not hesitate.===========Update on April 22:I am now far less enthusiastic:1. The cast iron top is NOT (reapeat NOT) easy to clean. It is so abrasive it will eat up sponges, paper towels and every thing else.2. The cast iron top stains very easily...with no hope of reducing the stain.3. Do not expect to change temperatures cooking on this top. The cast iron retains heat for a VERY long time. Trying to move from one temperature to another takes very many minutes...from high to low as much as 45 minutes.

3Not so hot range
By Tom
I bought the PCR-1B from Amazon a few years back for use outside in the back patio. At this price, I was hoping for rugged and high performance range that can equal a single cooking surface of the indoor range. I was a little disappointed in both expectations. The PCR-1B is durable but after a year of use, the knob already loosen and can pop out easily. The power indicator lamp cover crumbled but the light still work although slightly dimmed. The case and foots are sturdy and strong and support a large cooking pot with no problem. The 1500 Watts power ratting does not give out heat like that of a similarly rated indoor range. Also the temperature control often cuts off power too early so that it is hard to have constant high heat level. This problem prevents the PCR-1B from being used for stir fry job. It does work fine for soup, small quick fry, deep fry or pressure cooking.Overall, the PCR-1B is better than the low price portable electric burner but not as much as the price would suggest.

5Good quality and gets the job done
By M. Ingersoll
Received a pair of these kits for a lower end rebuild. Had pretty much everything I needed, except for some of the special tools that makes lower end rebuilds easier. I wouldn't hesitate buying aftermarket kits for Yamahas from Sierra again. They haven't let me down yet in 6 years.

5Best Purifier I Have Ever Used
By Shawn LoCascio
I have tried many types of purifiers over the years. My allergies would always lay me out and severely impact my quality of life. After becoming disillusioned by the Honeywell HEPAs and the Orek (eegads never buy the Orek!!!!!) I started a very detailed research project.Consistently, the BlueAir purifiers were at the top of every review and recommendation list. The only things beating them out were either attached to a house (I live in an apartment) or over $800. While the BlueAir itself is not cheap, I decided that my health was not worth saving the few hundred dollars another Honeywell would save me.It was the best $500 I ever spent. It runs quiet, it moves huge volumes of air and the filters are obviously doing their job. My allergies have subsided to a point where I no longer take meds! The unit has 4 speed settings, the lowest being called "HEPASilent" which is barely audible, and the highest being much too loud to use during sleep. I find the 3rd setting to be the best performance to noise ratio. I can sleep perfectly fine at this level and I am a fairly light sleeper. The unit can be heavy for lifting purposes, but comes on casters so you can easily wheel it around to different rooms. If I had any gripes about this purifier, it would be the lack of a pre-filter. The unit essentially sucks air from the bottom and shoots it out the top, front, and back. Dust accumulates on the metal housing frame and must be cleaned during each filter change. Cleaning the housing can be a tad difficult unless you have a very slender vacuum hose. The other potentially annoying thing is the fairly bright blue power light on the side. I hardly even notice it after over a year of use.

5Works Really Well!
By Jennifer N. Blanchard
I bought three of these for our townhouse - 1 for each level. We have 27 windows in this house (at least) and the dust is unbelievable! At first when I plugged in these purifiers I wasn't sure I noticed any difference so I did a test. I dusted in the master bedroom which gets the most dust (8 windows alone)and let this puppy go. Oh there was still dust after a two week period but then I dusted again and turned it off....the room was caked in dust so this purifier is definitely doing some heavy duty work. We've had these now for about 2 years and I think they're great! I'm glad we went with this model. After 6 months just look at your filters - it's amazing how much dirt this machine takes in.

4Good Unit
By Photoman
I bought this unit last year. It does a good job of eliminating the dust. The owners manual says to replace the filters every six months. When I first read that, I thought that was just a tactic to make more money. After six months I checked them, and they needed to be replaced. With new filters, I turned it up to the next higher speed, and within three months they were dirty. The filters are not cheap (other brands aren't either), but that's the price I have to pay for cleaner air. This unit has four speeds. On one and two, it's almost silent. On speed three you can hear it, but it's not objectionable. I leave it on that one all the time. The highest setting is too loud. The unit uses electostatic technology, and at first the air seemed to have an unusual quality, like being at a high altitude. But after about a month I got used to it, and now I would never turn it off.The only objection I have to this and most of the low to moderate priced home air purifiers is they don't adequately eliminate gases and/or odors. But as far as overall performance, this does a good job.

3Good for Movies
By Sam
NOTE: a large amount of reviews fall under the "Bose Bashing" category. While I don't particularly like Bose products, this review was written from an objective viewpoint based off experience with this product. These speakers are great for watching movies- especially "special effects" heavy movies, where surround sound is particularly important (such as "transformers"). The subwoofer is amazing. I have heard many woofers that sound "sloppy", only good for music with a heavy, and distinct bass part (such as hip-hop, or techno). The Bose "Lower Frequency Effects" module is different, in that it is controlled and smooth, not overbearing. The "surround sound" effect is greatly enhanced by the small satellites- because of their size they don't "overcrowd" the room with sound. Watching movies is a pleasure with this system.Unfortunately, I cannot say the same about listening to music. The main problem is that there is no substitute for diaphragm size. Sound is produced by moving air. Small speakers simply aren't able to move enough air to accurately produce instrumental music. Listening to a Santana CD, the sound seems distant, not immersive: The sound is not rich. So, if you want a minimally intrusive speaker system for you home theater, this is the product for you. If you enjoy listening to music, I would suggest looking at tower speakers. If you have any questions, I would be happy to answer them.UPDATEIt seems that dialogue doesn't come through very well. Turning up the level on the center channel helps a little, but there's always this lack of clarity and depth (especially with male voices). In general, listening through these speakers leaves one with the feeling that there's "something missing." It's not about volume either, since a good speaker should sound good even at low listening levels.

5In my opinion...
By Manny
I don't own one of these Bose systems, but as a sound engineer of 30 years plus, I have to defend Bose, when I see some of the terrible reviews they sometimes get. It seems that people either love 'em or hate 'em... After hearing these at a friend's house, (a guy who has good ear's, and can set up a system), I was very impressed. He does "concert night" at his home, and we listen to great music video concerts, (mostly jazz rock), such as Steely Dan,Sting,Lee Ritenour, Jeff Beck,etc...These videos have great sound, and they sound wonderful on his system! They also sound wonderful on my own huge JBL system, but in some ways, I actually like his better! My system will go louder,(and we like full scale concert volume),but his is loud enough to hurt,in his moderately sized 15x15 living room, and that's with very clean, full, sound...One reviewer mentioned that his bass module produced "farting" sounds. I never heard anything like that on my friend's system, and we like concert level bass. I have to wonder what size room it would take to cause these things to sound like that, and at what volume levels. Our listening levels are well above anything you would hear at a movie theater, and louder than most rock concerts we have been to! It makes me wonder if the reviewers are setting these things up properly. One reviewer mentioned that his ears were drawn to the bass unit, due to a high crossover point. I do not hear anything like that at my friend's house, nor did I hear that at any of the demos that you can see at BJ's and other places. In fact, I marveled at the stereo sound field, and how articulate and spacious these things sounded.(I might suggest that keeping the bass mod near the center of the stereo field, with the satellites slightly out in front should cure this problem)..Nor were any of these systems lacking in voice articulation, if anything, just the opposite. One thing that is great about these sytems is their size, (or lack of it), which enables many men to have a good, loud system without being served divorce papers. Also, I do not hear a lack of mids, as some reviewers have stated. If anything, to my ears, the upper mids, say 2 to 7khz, are forcefully but pleasantly stated, while the lower mids are just a bit understated (250 to 500 hz). This type of sound does give a very clean, crisp, clear perception, though. To my ears, Bose gets away with small bass drivers by emphasising 50 to 90 hz in its bass mods, with increasingly less sound at the lower freqs.(I think they also use processing that synthesizes low freq information by turning very low freqs into a combination of two or more higher freqs, which the human ear combines, and perceives to be the original lower freq, but don't quote me on that one.)However, there isn't that much musical information down lower than 40hz anyway, (contrary to popular opinion), and I can still feel the kick drum punching me pleasantly in the chest, and hear very well defined bass guitar notes. On my friends system, I love the way the kick and bass combine smoothly, and yet you can hear each instrument clearly in it's own space... Now, I'm not going to tell you that these are the absolute ultimate sound, (in fact, I don't care at all for the Bose wave radios, for the price),but I will say, that, especially for their size, many of these Bose systems are really nice. If they were sold at a lower price point, I think almost everyone would have them, at least in one room of their home. Like most people, I feel that price is their biggest downfall. But I don't hear BIG sound coming from anyone else's tiny speakers, so they kind of have the market cornered,if you need loud, full, and clean without taking up hardly any space. If these things are set up properly in a moderately sized, (say a maximum 15x20 foot room), and they don't sound good, then probably nothing else will either, and the next step would be to acoustically treat the room, by deadening hard surfaces with rugs, furniture, curtains, etc, or installing bass traps, (which actually increase bass, by not allowing low freqs to bounce around the room),causing room modes (dead and hot spots.)If you have the money but not the space, these will make you happy. If they don't, get some help setting them up before you send them back. I like 'em!

5Excellent value and quality
By Dr. James
I had a passive subwoofer previously on a patched together system. I was surprised how dramatic an improvement an actively powered subwoofer (at least one this big) can make. When the Rohan horses go thundering through in Lord of the Rings, I couldn't believe the difference. The satellites provide really crisp sound and are quite unobtrusive (makes the wife happy). I think you have to be more careful about placing the speakers, though, to make a seamless sound field since they are so small.Hook up was the easiest I've ever had, with all speaker cables factory labeled. One big cord runs to the amp outputs from the bass module, and simple plugs run from the bass module to your speakers. One caution- you'll need Bose wall brackets to hang these from your walls since the back of the satellites are threaded for a screw. I used to hang my previous speakers from heavy-duty picture hangers!

4Great speakers, price could be better
By Vanessa
Lets face it, you want to spend your hard earned money on something that will sound great and last for a long time. I agree with most reviewer that the price is too high, but I think the quality is great. I actually have a 6.1 receiver that hooks these speakers up and the additional Bose center speaker. I've had these for 3 years and they worked great, even after 3 different moves across the country. I have almost everything hooked up by fiber optics to my receiver for the best possible quality. Trust me their is a difference between, optical and analog quality and it obvious whenever I listen or play something on TV. Even still to this day when I watch a movie or play a video game I swear I'm hearing something outside or in the house, but its just the sound from the speakers. Also if you know someone in the military, they sell Bose at the PX/BX(Post/Base Exchange). I got mine there and it was cheaper and tax free.

5i love it, but know why people bash bose.
By jason
i bought this the other week because i wanted a system that not only sounded great but gave depth and a better experience when watching movies or sporting events. bose definatly delivers. UFC 58 was intense! the living room in my place is about 20 feet by 15 feet so these 5 speakers jammed into that area makes everything sound awesome. i ended up finding out why a lot of people dont like it though. one, because of the price and two, because of the space they put the system into. my friend purchased the same system after i told him to. hes a rich dude so he has a huge living room(about 30 by 25) the system didnt sound as good (obviously) due to how much space is in his living room. so i told him to pack it up, take it back, and get a custom system.you really have to put into account the size of the room that you are going to be putting your surround system into. they ARE small speakers(which is a great feature for most) but they wont deliver the way you might want if you have a huge living room. purchase them, if you dont like it....take it back, amazing concept, i know. but most shouldnt be disappointed though.

5music to ears
By A. Dalvi
Like what the other guy said if your room is around 20x15 and you want to keep speakers 'virtually invisible' this is for you. You buy it, try it if don't like it return it.I have been trying it and so far it's delivered upto my high expectations. Not only does it sound sweet and I feel like sitting in a live concert, or movie theater it cost me less than here also;) In B Js the package (AM15 series 1 silver+samsung HT DS610B receiver+5cd/dvd changer) for 950.I earlier thought samsung receiver/dvd player must be trashy but it's working okay and I could wait till HDMI-adaptive Onkyo (TX SR604 in particular) comes down to 200s (its right now 400).In one word I'd describe my HT as incredible.bose delivers! (for what it is known)
