4Superb, with some reservations
By R. Marotz
Let me start by saying I'm not a hardcore fan of any particular brand. I like to gauge lenses by their individual merits, rather than discussing them as a brand. The Sigma 28mm f/1.8 EX is an excellent lens from an optical standpoint. On digital and film SLRs from Nikon, I was always quite impressed with the optical quality. Even wide-open at f/1.8, it is roughly as good as the Nikkor 50mm f/1.8, which is somewhat low in contrast, but still resolves quite a bit of detail on the focal plane. Stopping down a stop or two, like with most lenses, really brings out the contrast and sharpness, and this lens delivered quite wonderfully, matching the famous 28/2.8 AIS Nikkor for sharpness both up-close and at infinity. Further, this lens allows closer focusing than the Nikkor, and possesses less apparent geometric distortion. As much as I love the AIS28, the Sigma is quite brilliant too. While very good at infinity, the lens shines for moderate closeups of objects like flowers. Although it says "macro" in the name, it only approaches 1:2.9 magnification, and the distance from the front element is quite small, so live insect photography will likely not be its forte. At this range, the lens also has a much smoother out-of-focus rendering wide-open than much of its competition (such as the 28/2 AIS Nikkor). If you like smooth boke (not everyone does, but many do), this can be a good lens for that effect. The biggest downsides are the size and the autofocus. Although it is high quality, the lens was simply too big for my taste. Compared to my 28/2.8 AIS, the Sigma is simply massive. In fact, it is about the same size as a 28/1.4 Nikkor, and uses larger (77mm) filters! This is a concern for people who like using filters like polarizers, which get much more expensive at large sizes. The second major issue is that the autofocus mechanism has proven unreliable, particularly on Canon versions of the lens. My Nikon experienced some focus inconsistency at midrange distances (better consistency up close). As I tend to manually focus, this was not too much of a problem, but for those who do depend on it heavily...this lens might cause frustration. Bear in mind, this is not the case for EVERY lens of this make; it is likely an issue with sample variation which has been pointed out for some time. Some people have great luck, some are not so lucky. As I prefer to manually focus and personally prefer smaller lenses, I opted instead for my AIS Nikkor, which has roughly equal optical quality in a much smaller package with inexpensive 52mm filters. However, I do miss my 28/1.8 Sigma and, were it a smaller, manual focus lens, I would likely be using it today. If you can get over the gargantuan size and if you can circumnavigate the sample-variation-related AF quirks, this lens is quite beautiful. I must give the designers kudos, even if it's not the perfect lens for me personally.

2Wonderful optics, but everything else falls short
By Herman Au
I am a working professional who uses my camera and lens on a daily basis and unlike most who only care about the optics, everything else matters to me, and I'm going to explain to you why I'm rating it only 2 out of 5 in details. The 28mm F/1.8 is a niche lens. Most people who shoot this wide never even need a large aperture to begin with. Event photographers don't shoot this wide very often, average photography enthusiasts would be better off with a ultra wide zoom lens instead of a prime, and landscape photographers who might treasure this the most often times prefers more in focus and thus rarely use large aperture like this on a wide. I shoot weddings, and every now and then I do rely on niche lens to create special images. And that's where this lens really shines. This lens is sharp, and actually much sharper than I expected even at F/1.8 where it's supposed to be soft, it performs really well. The only complain in terms of optics is that the color is a little cool and feels a little off comparing to every other Nikkor glass I own.Using this lens under well-lit scenarios is generally a pleasure. The very shallow depth of field at F/1.8 along with the macro capabilities of this lens will allow you to do a lot of things you wouldn't be able to do with a regular bag of lens. Even comparing to my Nikon 17-35mm f/2.8, this lens have a special place 'cause you can really still use the shallow depth of field to identify your subject shooting so wide, whereas the 17-35 at F/2.8 is probably at best good for low-light purposes. Distortion of this lens is very well controlled as well, which is a pleasant surprise to find on a 28mm wide angle lens.Unfortunately this is where the praises end. Below are my major complaints:1. Focusing mechanism is awful. I current own more than a dozen Nikon glass and this is the 2nd Sigma lens I own. Unfortunately they both behave similarly when they focus: it starts focusing from one end to the other, and if it cannot lock in the focus on the first try, it goes all the way back, and stop. I know it's hard to understand but in comparison, a Nikon lens would also start focusing from one end to the other, but somewhere along the line it has an idea where to lock in the focus and it tries hard to stop there; and if it misses the first time, it will go back and forth around that focus distance and try to lock in without having to go all the way from one end to another again.2. Focus accuracy is way low... it's simply unreliable. Unless you're focusing on something with a clear edge, or something contrasty and easily identifiable, the lens falls way short. This becomes more apparent when you're trying to shoot against the light and try to autofocus - typically I can get about 50-60% successful rate on a D700 with a 50 F/1.4G or a 17-35mm F/2.8, but on a Sigma it will probably lock in about 15% of the time, and half the time it's actually wrong even when it locks in.3. Focusing speed is way slow... but that probably has something to do with the macro capabilities.4. Construction - Generally speaking the lens construction is pretty good, but Just like the Sigma 105mm F/2.8 macro, the lens barrel rolls in and out when you focus. This isn't as serious as the 105mm but then the lens hood is attached to the inner barrel, which doesn't exactly protect the lens very well. That being said, will I still keep my lens? The short answer is YES, I will. There really isn't a much better option there at this price point unless Nikon makes a full frame fast and wide prime at F/1.8 below $1,000. I have a hard time justifying spending about $2k for a lens that I don't use more often, or won't find a permanent spot in my camera/lens case. Will it work for you? YMMV. It depends on what you do with it, and how you use it.

5One of the best lenses for Canon I have ever used
By A. Rabun
From precise macro to wide-angle shots, this lens performs very, very well. The images it produces are tack-sharp. I have all but abandoned my 50mm f/1.8 on my 50D...this lens is closer to "normal" on the crop sensor. The bokeh is marvelous: creamy, smooth, and dreamy. The colors are typically Sigma: that is to say a little warm and not overly saturated but not exactly subdued. The build quality is far better than most Canon lenses in this price range, which is also typical of Sigma. The auto-focus performs well, occasionally seeking at very close macro distances, but that is normal for the small DOF of macro lenses, plus I do not have a ring- or macro-light.As I said, I use this lens as "normal" on my crop bodies but on the 5D (I have the original not the Mark ii) it really shines as a wide angle lens. 28mm is the perfect indoor angle offering enough field of view to capture everyone in your scene but still allowing use of flash to fill the dark spots using my 580 EX II. I have essentially stopped using the 24-105 f/4L for wide angle work because this lens is so sharp. Now, the obvious strong point of this lens is the f/1.8 aperture which is sharp, sharp, sharp even wide open with virtually no falloff and almost no CA. I never hesitate to just leave it wide and shoot in TV mode to stop action or to create action trails. Using it indoors at 400 ISO I get perfect images every time without the harshness of flash.I have used this lens on these bodies with excellent results:50D5DRebel XTi (400D)Elan 7 (35mm film)Elan IIe (35mm film)EOS 3 (35mm film)So for crop or full frame, this is a great walk around, macro, and wide angle lens.

5AMAZINGLY SHARP AND FAST SUPER-WIDE ANGLE
By Canon
I have used this lens extensively with the 1D and the Rebel XT. Results have been excellent. My suspicion is that the previous reviewer got a defective or damaged copy of the lens. It is incredibly sharp, even at f1.8, which I did not expect - generally you expect a lens to be a bit soft wide open, especially 1.8. The degree of sharpness of this lens is quite surprising.I have used, for example, both the Canon 50mm f1.8 and the Canon 35mm f2.0, both of which are deservedly renowned for their sharpness and contrast. I find this lens to be sharper than either of them wide open. The lens provides images which have excellent color saturation and contrast. Of course, at f1.8, depth of field is razor thin, by design, which is great for bokeh or out of focus background, but which also requires care concerning the desired focal point being in focus. Speaking of bokeh, I find it to be very attractive compared to any other lens I have used. Its minimum distance focusing is also quite remarkable. I think it is rated at just under 8 inches, but I routinely focus at distances which seem a good bit closer than that. The lens works well as a macro for many applications, with a relatively strong multiplication factor.Of course, given the inherent light-gathering of a 20mm focal length lens, combined with a huge aperture of f1.8, this lens is outstanding for shooting indoors or in other low-light situations with natural light and no flash.Canon's nearest competitor to this lens is the 20mm f2.8, which is a full stop slower in terms of light collection. I consider this lens to be an extremely good value at the retail price, new. If you can get a good copy used on-line, it will be an incredible value. You may find that you never want to take the lens off the camera because of its versatility as a walkaround lens. This lens has been extremely well-reviewed, by and large, on lens forum sites. I encourage you to check those out. Most people rate the lens 5 out of 5. A distinct minority give it 1 out of 5. I suspect that they either have defective copies which may need repair, or they have inaccurate perceptions of the lens. Also, popular photography magazine online reviewed this lens, as well as the 24 f1.8 and the 28 f1.8, very highly.I would highly recommend this lens to anyone who wants a fast, sharp superwide angle lens.

5Wonderful!!!
By Micah
This is one of my all time favorite lenses. I usually just leave it mounted. It's fast max aperture and close focusing make it indispensable to me. Check it out--it focuses to within an inch of the front lens element! [edit: re-checked and it's actually about 3" from the front element. For reference the Nikon 20/2.8 focuses about 9" and the 28/1.4 focuses about 11" from the end of the lens.]I've had one issue-it recently self destructed. The iris folded over itself. It's inside the four year warranty (and damn near the end I might add) so it's been fixed and is currently on the way back to me from sigma as I type this. I'm disappointed it failed, but considering the frame count and price, I can't really complain. [edit: ok, maybe I can complain. It took them no less than five (5) tries to repair it properly. But in the end they did and I only had to pay the cost of shipping the first time. Works at least as good as new.]I paid not much more than $300 for this lens new almost 4 years ago, and I'd gladly pay twice that for the shots this lens has gotten me. I've taken it out in the rain and snow and hail and the fact that it failed only recently attests to the build of this fine lens.Buy it while they still make it! I may buy a backup soon for this reason.[edit: falling in love all over again! This thing rocks on my new d700!]

5Ultra-wide lens with sharpest optics!
By Denzil Thakur
Sigma 20mm EX is an exceptionally well made lens. Performance is extremely satisfactory. It is almost indispensable for me to go without it when I am outdoors. Takes very good wide angle shots of buildings, parks and friends and family picnicking in the park. Shots have come very sharp and crisp with edge to edge brightness and sharpness. 20mm wide angle focal length gives you a very large depth of field which is essential for taking shots of wide open outdoors, filling your frame with a large expanse of ground/sky. Fast f1.8 aperture will let you take snaps indoors in natural light and hand-held shots of lighted buildings etc. in night time. Rear focusing feature of this lens results in fast AF and also the length of the lens remains same. Macro shots of subjects will give you convex mirror type of fascinating images and one can produce far more interesting effects depending on one's creativity.

Indoor flash photography may give rise to vignetting due to ultra wide nature of the lens as most flashes cover only 28mm span. This may probably be solved by using a wide angle attachment on the flash which to my disappointment was not available for my flash (Pentax AF-280T). Also 82mm filters may prove to be expensive. But I think a filter is essential for this lens as the front element glass is very near to the filter area.

All said this is an extremely satisfying buy (most bang for bucks) which gives you great results.

5Even an idiot can use the SmartCast!
By Doug
I really enjoy my Smartcast. I use rechargeable batteries and always keep extras in the trunk. I get about 25 to 40 hours of run time, the lesser if kept on all day or when using at night.I've used this deal about twice a month for the past two years. So when the original sonar unit goes out, and it will, no way will I buy a replacement. I'll just crack it open with an electric exacto-knife, change the batteries, and seal it back up with my plastic welding kit. Anyway, why toss a perfectly good unit if it can be renewed.I've used this thing often at the Oregon dam, that's in Illinois on the Rock River, often after dusk. Man, some nights this thing is lit big time with flatheads and walleye. The biggest flat I've found using this thing was about 25 pounds, and the biggest walleye was about 9 pounds - both released.I used it last May on the Wisconsin River in the Dells, and it was very handy for honing in on migrating schools of stripped and white bass. And at night in the Dells? Well, if you can't catch a fish at night in the Dells, then there's something wrong with you.In Dubuque on the 'Sippi this summer, I was using it around pilings and stuff. I plotted a lot of bar structure and the like, too. All of which was ultimately usefull in getting good numbers of smallmouth, striper, sauger, and walleye. The base section has a number of good features, and seems rather technologically efficient. And I toss the sonar about on a big surf casting rig with 20 lb. test Fireline - no problem. There are some limitations of ghosting or incomplete readings at times, but it's all mostly minor or transient stuff. In use, I generally get some depth and structure readings to figure out a section to work. Then I'll turn on the 'fish alarm' and idle the sonar in some slack water. Then as I'm working that other section and the alarm goes off, I'll quickly toss in a kamikaze leech, "Bonsai!", no wait that's, "Banzai!", right on top of that slack water fish. I always keep a rig set aside for just such a tactic as it so often yields success. So, if you shore fish and want to detect movement, structure, and depth - get this deal and keep a log book of your activity. I've located and mapped out many new 'sweet spots' using my SmartCast, and now it often never makes it out of the box - because it's already done its job.

5Love this thing!
By Asblank
I was skeptical of how well a wireless fish finder could be. I received on as a gift so I figured there was nothing to lose. I took it out to a couple of different places and sure enough it works like a charm. The depth and temperature reading are pretty accurate, the gray scale leaves some room for improvement but for what I use it for it's great.

5Another excellent product
By Amalfi Coast Girl
It is important to note that this is not a stand-alone phone. It requires another Siemen's base phone in order to be operational. The phone is extremely small, think small cell phone small. I do not find the buttons too tight to use. However, my husband (and his larger fingers) does have a little difficulty with the size of the buttons. The voice quality is very clear and the headset is very useful. I also appreciate how lightweight the phone is when I am using the headset and have the phone in my pocket or clipped to my belt. The phone seems to be well made as it has been dropped on the floor from a table several times and suffered no damage. If you are like me and use only cordless phones in your home get an UPS (uninterruptible power supply) to hook up to the base system. I was surprised when my power went out and I didn't have a working phone system a few years back. The UPS system took care of the problem with the next power outage.I strongly recommend this product. It functions as advertised. Be certain to look at the dimensions before you purchase. It is a very small phone, probably smaller than you expect it to be.

1Siemens GigaVoice SL30 Micro
By CKK
We purchased the two of the larger Siemens GigaVoice phones (SL3500 series) and needed another extension. Because the larger version was no longer available, we bought this phone. The sound quality, both incoming and outgoing, is terrible. The handset is difficult to remove from the base. This phone sits in the study and is rarely used. The SL3500 series is wonderful...going on 12 years!

4SL30 to replace the Siemens 4200 Series Handset
By Bobby Paragon
I purchased the SL30 two reasons .. 1) because it's fully compatible with my Siemens 2415 GigaVoice system AND 2) It has provisions for an earpiece/mike attachment. I'm keeping the 4200 Handsets for the rest of my home, but for my personal use when I must handle a LOT of telecons I use the SL30. It works quite well. It's a bit small for my hands as are most other cell phones but it's GREAT for the reasons I mentioned. It's about 1/2 the size of the 4200 series but it's sound remains pretty good; not quite as good as the 4200 but quite acceptable. So if you have the 4215 Series wireless AND you want the capability of earpiece/mike operations. BUY IT!

5Most awesome!
By Noah D. Sachs
Seriously this is the best kite I've ever had and when I fly it at the beach little kids come over and stand in awe. It's like a stunt kite, but really it's beyond a typical kite, it doesn't just hang in the air, you really have to fly it, trimming left and right for changes in the wind. I love is that you can't break this kite, there are no stays or bits to break, crash it all you want.

5Fun kite for any skill level
By Doug H
Nice kite, well made, flies very nicely and is stable in varying wind conditions. Being able to stuff everything into the included stuff sack and clip it to your belt makes it a very handy kite that you can have with you at all times.Kids and grandkids loved flying this. It can even be relaunched without help, a big plus when you are first learning.

2Not impressed...
By B. Soper
This kite was kind of a dud for me. I own several other parafoil kites of the same size and they are much more enjoyable to fly. This kite has very little pull and was hard to keep in the air. The HQ Symphony Series are great kites if you go bigger (1.8 or 2.2). I would recommend the 2.2 if you are going to by a HQ Symphony Kite. I would rate the 2.2 as 4.5 stars.

5Great TV stand
By Joshua York
I've had this stand for ~4 years and I've been very happy with it. I have a very heavy 35" CRT on it and it holds up very well. Very sturdy. Aside from that, it looks great and assembly was easy.I was going to give this stand a 4 star rating, because the cord management system is a little difficult to use, but I gave it 5 stars because some other moron gave it a 1 star rating because the seller screwed up his order.... IDIOT.Hope this was helpful,Josh

5Nice stand - Easy setup
By Bean
I put this stand together in about 1/2 hr. Directions were fairly good and assembly was easy with very few parts to assemble. The stand looks great with the simple design and is very stable. I used the cord management system (tube at back of stand)to stuff extra cables and power cords into. Only complaint is that the manufacturer does not specify the weight limit, instead giving a max TV size. The table is pretty heavy, with 90% of the weight being the three glass shelves. I am happy with this purchase from Amazon.

5Very attractive and functional.
By P. Stein
I purchased this 2 years ago for my 37 inch LCD HDTV.Easy to assemble. Looks fantastic.Very stable.Con. The manual didn't give a max weight for a TV. It said accomodates most. What does that mean? I have my TV on top; my Wii, Direct TV DVR, and my combo VCR/DVD player on the middle shelf. I have a large Sony receiver on the bottom shelf, along with the Wii Fit board. Holds a lot of weight. I'd feel comfortable with an LCD of any size. Not sure about Plasma TV sizes.

5EXCELLENT VALUE FOR HD TV
By Peter Previte
What attracted me to this particular receiver was it's ability to handle Component Video and High Definition TV, in particular. I recently bought an HD-ready TV and have an HD Cable TV Converter as well as a DVD player with Progressive Scan. I needed a new receiver that could handle the switching duties between the various components. The 895 does the job handily. A necessary feature was the 80Mhz pass-thru between the Converter box and the Monitor. (No other A/V receivers in this price range have this high a quality of spec.) This allows ample bandwidth for the High Definition signal to pass thru the receiver and onto the Monitor with no degradation to the signal. In addition to a dedicated Component Video input for the DVD Player, the receiver boasts a coaxial digital audio input. The Progressive Scan video and CD quality sound that the 895 allows to pass through is extraordinary. Then there is the 895's 6.1 surround sound.... fantastic! I have a unique situation in that I have 2 CD Players with digital outputs that needed to be hooked up to the receiver. No problem due to the assignable fibre optic digital inputs. You can even re-label how you want the input description to show up on the front panel of the 895. Cool! (So was the color option - I opted for the silver to match my TV ;-) I have been extremely satisfied with this Sony receiver and rate it a solid 5 STARS.

3THIS IS A GOOD ENTRY-LEVEL RECEIVER
By David B. Bennett
First of all I want to describe the positive points about this receiver, and then I will point out its weak points. This receiver is extremely easy to hook-up and set-up, although if one is going to use this receiver as the heart of a surround sound home theater system, then there are a lot of parameters that must be set up prior to the first listening. These parameter adjustments may take up to 8 to 10 hours, but they are easy and straight forward, and the manual is very well written to allow a first time user the ability to sort through all of the various features and adjustments with minimal frustration. If one is using this as the heart of a surround sound home theatre system, this receiver does provide ample connections and features to assure forward compatability with various componets and encoding, decoding of digital material. With its fiber optic inputs (which I highly recommend using) and onboard DACs, this receiver provides the flexibility that one needs to control a variety of home theatre products. The best feature of this product is the musicallity of the onboard amplifiers. With low distortion, high power, and quick response times, this receiver is an able bodied amplifier for even the most demanding musical numbers. The only reason why I bought this receiver was for the six channel discreet amplifier section coupled to a six channel analog input option. This feature was neccasary for my set-up as I have a SACD player. It is here that the receiver earns its low rateing of only three stars. The tone controls, which are pretty cheap to begin with, having no loudness compensation circuit, do not even work with a multi-channel input. The tone controls only operate on the front two channels, so any time a person wants to enjoy surround sound, it is relatively flat WITH NO POSSIBLE WAY TO ADJUST THE FREQUENCY. This is a real weakness for a receiver that was intended to be the heart of a surround sound system, but the engineers must have felt that they could save enough money by not including any tone controls that it warrented this obvious lack of crucial adjustment. Every musical piece, and most movie playback, would benifit from the ability for a user to adjust the frequency response slightly, tweek the sound so to speak. I can understand that adding tone controls to a receiver my cost a little bit of money, but the exclusion of tone controls seems to me to be a shame that SONY should rectify ASAP. But it must be remebered that this is an entry level receiver, so I guess one can't be to critical. All in all, if you are in the market for a low-cost, entry level receiver for a home theatre system, consider this model. If you have a little more money, I would highly recommend skipping this model and moving up to a genuine high fidelity receiver.

5Great receiver for the price
By A Customer
Love this receiver. Price is way low and it's packed with tons of features. Plenty of power to drive all my speakers. An user here complained about the lack of tone control but I disagree. There are just a lot of settings you can tweek on this machine. You can set your bass/treb levels, speaker sizes, speaker distances, speaker heights, and a few more. Haven't found anything bad about this receiver. I was comparing this with other brands such as Yamaha and Onkyo. They lacked some of the crucial features I was looking for (assignable digital audio inputs, video switching, etc) and the Sony looks great. Definitely recommend.
