5Wish I had this years ago!
By Richard G. Amirault
Great product. I wish I had discovered minidisc technology years ago. I purchase this for one reason (descrete, portable recording), but ended up using it mostly for another reason (music playback)

It's not perfect. I wish it had the AM/FM turer, but I was not willing to pay the $70 extra for the model with the tuner. I would also have been nice to record off a mike, but it has a line input and you can run your mike(s) thru a mixer if you really need to record "live".

Recordings made thru the line-input cannot be uploaded to your computer either.

But what it does it does very, very well. A single 80 min disc can hold (at maximum compression) well over 5 hours of music! It only needs a single AA cell, and that lasts for over 50 hours on playback. Well worth the money.

2I love it and I hate it
By Toomuchnoise
TWO YEAR UPDATE:After two years of use, I love it more and hate it less.It is worked WIHOUT FAIL on daily use. I can't say this about most of my electronic gear. I use it mostly for "time shifting" of my favorite radio programs. I also use it to listen to books on tape (which I've dubbed over)... again it is a great product for this. The bookmarking feature is wonderful for keeping track where you're at in the book.I now have the SonicStage version 2 and it is much better. Still not great... but much more useable.--------------I use my MD player every day so, obviously, something is right about it. I actually own two!But I also want to write a cranky email to this engineer at Sony signed off on the software! It is AMAZINGLY bad! SonicStage (1.5 is my version) is SO counter-intuitive that I just can't use it... and I'm pretty savvy with computer stuff. LITERALLY -- I can't use it.I can't figure out any way to just drag-and-drop songs to the player in the SonicStage software. Why in the world not? It's baffling.Instead Sony makes you go through this ridiculous "check in check out" process. (or is it "check out - check in"?) It makes no sense to me. Maybe if you grew up on right-brained computer games like Mario Brothers, you could just let go of the need for logic.FORTUNATELY, you can get a plug-in for RealAudio which is better but still not that great. The SimpleBurner isn't too bad either -- it's just limited to copying your CDs.The Sony MD player is terrific at recording stuff off the radio for time-shifting. However, Sony won't let you transfer it back on to your computer for safe-keeping. The only way to do this is real time dubbing through your sound card. How FRUSThttps://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKlTcxregH7wz9aILhBCJEQ1jWoQHl8xtfySawez32Ug94mLFGCnoD7Rve2LmGQieIGue2MWISctZbWsufGgqaSig-2lmSJWmjZNRO7VIopwAN8_nB8NWkRMKzMvbHdjxKAVseXwYNz1Y/s1600/rating+4.png! The MD could be one terrific tool for ripping your old LPs, or whatever, but Sony has made this impractical. This crippling of functions by Sony makes it useless for lots of people, I'm sure. The compression and audio quality are terrific and it sounds great to my ears, even at the highest compression rates. One terrific thing you can do with the MD is record off you favorite radio stations and then edit out the commercials and even move the songs around. This is so easy to do, that I do this while on my evening walks! You end up with a custom "best of" tape. But, then it's a pain-in-the-neck if you want to get that back on your computer. The price is a deal for such a great piece of hardware and the MD disks are cheap, sturdy and hold a lot. I take mine on trips all over the world and even 5 MDs is plenty. I take my MD places that I would be nervous to take an IPod or some other higher-priced MP3 player. Also, battery life is great and it uses just normal AA's which you can buy anywhere -- a big advantage for travel.Even though it is marketed as "speedy" it doesn't seem that fast to me. I haven't' actually timed it, but I think you could burn an MP3 CD quite a bit faster. So, if you want to time-shift NPR or Rush, it's a great little machine. I havne't seen anything around that can beat it. But I wouldn't recommend it for listening to MP3s.If Sony had just written better software and hadn't crippled it, the MD player would be killer. But, it's good for some functions like time shifting.

4Walkman is great
By Sameep Tandon
This is a great MiniDisc Recorder/Player, but I highly discourage people from running with it. It's quite big, and a little bulky, even though it does fit in a palm of somebody older than 13. It's pros definetly outweigh the cons. So heres my list of pros and cons.

ProsGreat Software- I dont see what the complaining is about. If you follow the directions you'll be done in less than 2 minutes!Recording Speeds- Really nice if your in a hurry. You can burn approximately 20 songs a minute and 100 songs in 6 minutes.Memory/Data in a MiniDisc- Although the minidisc claims to be 74 minutes, you can alter the quality of the song (Lp4, Lp2) modes and gets incredible amounts of songs. In LP4 mode (66k) you can get nearly 5 hours of music (4 hours 59 minutes to be precise) and in Lp2 (132k) you can get approx. half of that. Although I said "Alter the quality) there is really no way you can tell the difference between standard and LP4. The only difference I have picked up is that you have to raise the volume a little bit.Battery Life- 1AA battery can run for 56 hours continually (but its more if you turn it on and off) I've had my MiniDisc Player for 2 weeks now and I listen to it atleast 3/4 hours a day and still is at FULL battery.

ConsSearching for songs- Searching for songs often can be a pain, especially if you don't figure it out (READ THE MANUAL! IT REALLY WORKS)

There aren't many cons to this player.

Overall I would give this player a high rating of 4.5/5 stars. It's really good and I don't see what the complaining is about.

Factory-Reconditioned Cuisinart DCC-1200FR Brew Central 12-Cup Coffeemaker, Brushed Stainless SteelBuy Factory-Reconditioned Cuisinart DCC-1200FR Brew Central 12-Cup Coffeemaker, Brushed Stainless Steel

Factory-Reconditioned Cuisinart DCC-1200FR Brew Central 12-Cup Coffeemaker, Brushed Stainless Steel Product Description:

  • Retro-style, brushed stainless-steel coffeemaker brews 12 5-ounce cups
  • 24-hour clock/timer for wake-up coffee; brew-pause; programmable shut-off
  • 1-to-4- or 5-to-12-cup brewing options provide maximum flavor
  • Charcoal water filter; decalcification indicator; heat-adjustable warming plate
  • Measures 14-1/4 by 8 by 10-3/4 inches

Product Description

Modern brewing technology with a retro design and stainless steel finish let Cuisinart's Brew Central coffee maker blend with vintage kitchens and ones equipped with fashionable stainless modern appliances, too. The Brew Central makes up to twelve 5-ounce cups of coffee, with two settings for serving either one to four coffee drinkers or five to twelve--just the right amount of joe for a small gathering or a thermos-size day's supply for the whole crew.

The Brew Central lets you go from pillow to pot with a digital clock/timer that programs for automatic "wake-up" coffee, setting up to 24 hours in advance. The coffee maker can also be set to turn off automatically up to four hours in advance. If you can't wait for the brewing to finish, removing the glass carafe from the warming plate automatically pauses the brewing process for a quick pour. The hotplate temperature adjusts for hot, steamy sipping coffee with newspaper in hand, or for cup just warm enough for a swift swill on the way to work.

Cuisinart also equipped this coffee maker with a swing-out basket, so you don't have to pull the whole unit out from under the kitchen cabinet to pour in the grounds. A charcoal water filter ensures optimal taste, and a permanent Gold Tone filter eliminates messy paper filters. An indicator-light shows when decalcification is needed for years of reliable use. The coffeemaker measures 14-1/4 inches high, 8 inches wide, and 10-3/4 inches deep (including carafe handle).

4Minor design flaws keep this good coffeemaker from greatness
By S. Williams
Would I buy this coffee maker for the full price of the new model? Probably not. But the reconditioned one is a great value.

It looks great, as is apparent from the photo. Keep in mind, though, that as a reconditioned unit, it may have some minor blemishes to its appearance. Mine, for example, has a very small dent in the stainless steel on its left side. It's not noticable unless you're looking for it, and that alone wouldn't keep me from recommending this coffee maker. (Also, as previous reviewers have noted, this model does NOT come with a permanent filter like the new model does.)

What's a little iffier about it, though, are a couple strange design issues that affect usability.

Every coffee maker I've ever owned has had a flip-top carafe--but not this one. You have to physically remove the lid to pour water into the carafe--a minor inconvenience, but an inconvenience nonetheless.

You need the carafe to measure water, because there's no water-level indicator on the coffee maker itself. Additionally, the water filter takes up a lot of the space under the lid, meaning that there's a relatively small space to pour the water into from the carafe. It's enough room that someone without any mobility problems shouldn't have any issues getting the water in, but it takes a little getting used to.

Overall, I'd recommend the reconditioned model of the Brew Central. It's not so great that I'd replace it with another one of the same model if it became unusable, but good enough that I'm glad to have it on the counter.

5So far, so good!
By Katy Lake
This is my second attempt into the "higher end" coffeemaker ranks, and I can honestly say the Cuisinart Brew Central has fulfilled all my expectations.

The coffee is just marvelous! It works fast and quick, and it's H-O-T, which is fine by me since the previous Krups disaster absolutely blew big time and produced marginally warm coffee at best.

I'm no coffee diva, but I grind my own beans and have for years. Of course it takes a little fine-tuning to get the right measure of coffee vs. water, but I hit the mark on the second pot.

My local tap water is actually very good, so I didn't think the charcoal filter would do much. But actually, the coffee tastes even better - so who knows? I think I'd try brewing coffee without the filter once this one wears out, just to see if there's much of a difference.

I purposely bought a reconditioned machine, since I spent $100 on the previous Krups horror, and I didn't want another repeat of a waste of money. My Cuisinart arrived without the gold filter (which is fine by me; I don't like permanent filters anyway), but the machine itself looked absolutely unused. No dents or dings. As to the "seeing inside to pour the water" thing, my machine has white marks with numbers on it, so it's easy to get the right water level. (I'm also tall, so that probably didn't hurt. I can see where a shortie would need a stepladder to look inside - this is a tall, imposing machine!)

My only complaint, if you can even call it one, is that the price of the filters can add up. I've been looking around on ebay and on amazon, and the average price per filter is about $3. Now that doesn't sound like much, since you replace it every 60 pots, but we're BIG coffee drinkers here, so that filter isn't going to last a month.

Oh well. It's probably a small price to pay for a machine that so far (knock wood!) has exceeded all my expectations.

But if anyone does know of a good place to buy DISCOUNT charcoal filters, lemme know! Between air purifiers and hypoallergenic vaccum cleaners, filter replacement can chew your wallet up!

5I now own two.
By Michael Casey
I bought one full price and one refurbished (for the office) and I love both. Very easy to use, the self cleaning function is what I really appreciate. I run the simple cleaning process every week and the coffee maker always brews fresh, clean coffee without that dirty bitter flavor found in most cups of office coffee. My only caution is to be careful pouring the water into the maker -- the drain opening is rather small so be careful. Otherwise, a dependable coffee maker (I've had my first one for over a year) that looks great on the counter.

4Great toy
By S. Batista
I purchased this for my 15 month old son a month ago, after finding him playing in his clothes hamper several times. (The hamper is made by the same materials and mode as this playland). It was a lot larger than i expected, it took up half my dining room since it wouldn't fit in the kids bedroom.Set up took about 15 minutes, but that's only because I couldn't keep the kids to stop crawling through the tunnels while I velcrowed everything together. As soon as the first tent was out of the box and popped open the kids were crawling though and playing with the basket ball and other balls. They loved it.Since then my older son has gotten over the initial trill and doesn't play in the tents anymore, but my toddler still loves to crawl in there and hide to play with other toys, I think his imagination is expanding and this is the perfect hidding place. Now we are moving houses and I am taking the tent down... i lost the instructions and I cant figure it out, the e-z twist & fold technology is not very user friendly, I'm sure once it will be set up new home for good I dont want to ever fold this again.

By Nancy E. Unger
I had bought this for my 2 year old nephew but his 6 year old brother loves it as well. It is great for rainy days and they have fun moving the rooms around. They camp, play and take naps in it. If they haven't destroyed it by now, it must be pretty durable!

5GOOD CHOICE
By Mom of Two
I bought this product for my four nieces and nephews and it could not of been a better buy. It is longer than I expected and the kids have lot of space to play. It does have a carrying bag for the smaller pieces and the tunnels are easy to put up or take down.

5A Great Stylish Computer
By A Customer
The Apple iMac is a great computer that has been nothing but an easy transition from the PC world. Its design is much more than a statement it actually has a very useful application, the swiviling screen allows you to move the scren anywhere and the small footprint of the base makes putting it on a cluttered desk easy. Having only one power cord even greatly limits the amount of desk clutter that is added by the computer itself. The imac is speedy and more than capable of performing any task I give it. Mac OS X is beautiful and speedy. Everything works like a charm. Even an after market MP3 player I bought worked fine with it right out of the box.

5Good bye PC's
By J. Fitzpatrick
For years I have dealt with PC's. The freezing up at inappropriate moments, the noise, how they often lag. With some nudging from my girl friend and mother who both have used Macs extensively, I looked into them, and purchased the iMac,, and I have never been so happy using a computer. It used to be a major headache just to open attachments on an e-mail, often times ending in a colorful proliferation of four letter words being bandied about. But with the iMac, the most simple things are just that simple. Sure there may be some drawbacks such as a couple of web sites have glitches when viewing, but the bottom line is that does not matter.

If you're tired of a non user friendly computer which is always crashing. A system to use at home which won't make you want to trash it, this is your answer.

5The GrandDaddy of Hand Blenders!
By Stephanie Lamphere
June 25, 2004: I have had a Braun handblender for many years (10 years?), and was pleased with its performance, until it finally lost its spunk last week. I bought this product yesterday as a replacement, and I must say I am very pleasantly surprised! This was a HUGE step up! I would even say that this is a professional quality gadget! (It is certainly styled to look the part!)My favorite thing to make with my handblender is hummus - a mediterranean chick pea dip - and last night I made some the smooooothest hummus I ever made! This is in part because of the 9 speeds available on this model. I started out with lower speeds and then worked my way up to the top one. This is a large handblender, but it was comfortable and easy to use - lightweight even, and sure has a LOT of power. As with most of these products, it was a little difficult to clean the blades, but not a problem. (Really, the best way to clean it is to "blend" a cup of soapy water!)There other models of this that come with attachments - that might be nice in the future, if I want to whip or chop using the attachments - but this basic model with the blender and the cup are all I need for most anything, and worth the price tag for the POWER you get from this brand! It's true what they say - KitchenAid ROCKS!UPDATE: yikes! I was blending bread into breadcrumbs (not toasted, silly me) and it got doughy and really thick and blew the fuse. If anyone knows how to fix that, please comment. I stand by my earlier glowing review - this incident was my fault!

5Quite useful, seems well made
By Matthew Leo
For those of you have have never had one, these immersion blenders are quite handy. They are easy to clean, and convenient to use. They also don't take up much space; I keep my KitchenAid unit on the counter, and store the beaker in the cupboard where I keep glasses, with the blender attachment inside. It's no fuss at all if you want to mix just a single drink. While a traditional blender is more versatile, if I had a choice of only one I'd go with the hand blender as being the most useful on a day to day basis. This is the second immersion blender I have owned. I like this one quite a bit; it is powerful, but quiet. I'm not sure whether having 9 speeds is so important, I find I either use speed setting 1 or 9. Maybe they should make custom units that go all the way to 11. ;-)One concern with a device like this is marrying a powerful motor to a removeable attachment. My first device (an Oster) chewed itself to bits, leaving metal shavings in my food (good thing I checked). The KitchenAid unit's attachment has a good positive lock design which makes this improbable. A safety interock would have been better. The metal shaft of the blending attachment is driven by a hard plastic socket with slim splines. This means in the unlikely event of anything ending up in your food, you'll have tiny bits of fractured plastic, not desirable of course, but preferable to long, razor sharp metal shavings. The socket looks like it could be replaced if necessary, but given the price most people would opt for replacing the entire unit over having it serviced. One thing would be nice is if the guard around the actual blades was plastic instead of metal. Then it could be used directly inside nonstick saucepans for pureeing soup. Conclusion: a safety interlock and plastic blender shield would improve this product, but overall it is well made, quiet and safe. Few things are made to last these days, but given how useful this device is, its a safe bet you will get your money's worth.

3Great blender but DO NOT USE WITH ICE OR FROZEN FRUIT!
By chileheadcraig
This has been a great blender up until earlier this week. You can read all the great positive reviews here on Amazon to get a feel for the versatility of this blender. My purpose for writing this review is to warn others not to use this with ice or frozen fruits. I'd say that my blender is about a few years old and about a year ago I began making protein shakes for breakfast, sometimes using ice or frozen strawberries & bananas. I'd say I made 3-4 a week. The other day when cleaning out my sports bottle, I found one of the BLADES at the bottom. It broke clean off! (I uploaded a picture) I can't imagine the pain I would have been in if I actually drank that thing. If this hadn't happened, I'd just be as happy as a clam like everyone else with this thing. I recommend that if you get it, only use it for "soft" blending. NO ICE OR FROZEN FRUIT! If you treat it gently, I'm sure it will last you quite a bit longer than mine did. Maybe it was my fault for assuming that I could use it this way. I did look back in the manual and the only indication given that it can't handle this is where they give some recipes and then say "frozen xyz fruit, partially thawed" by one of the ingredients. Buyer beware!UPDATE: I emailed customer service and they offered to replace it even though its out of warranty. Nice! I will give them credit for standing behind their product when they technically didn't have to. Just FYI for all those thinking about purchasing this, read the representatives response below and keep it in mind when you are thinking of ways you will use this. I was anticipating the response about the fruit, but that still doesn't explain why their Mocha Frappé recipe calls for 1 - 1 1/2 cups of ice.Rep's response: "For future reference, we do not recommend any ice be processed with the immersion blender. Although it is not expressly stated in the manual, the two smoothie recipes included recommend to use only thawed, canned, or fresh fruit, not frozen."
