5An Amazing Commercial Grade Panasonic VCR!
By Mr Doug Gordon
Back in 2003, I was in the market for a "less is more" VCR that was solid and built to last. The cost to convert my VHS over to DVD was too time and money consuming. The only feature I was looking for was to have a heavy duty tape transport mechanism & heads that wouldn't damage tapes, cause mechanical issues and have excellent picture quality. The consumer models around this time were fully loaded with a lot of features that I wouldn't use and the quality was getting cheaper, due to the popularity of DVD players. So I found the AG-1350 VCR-(Made In Malaysia) in Panasonic's Professional Products section of their website. There was also a Hi-Fi model shown, but I can't remember the model #. The stereo model was made in China, but double the price of the AG-1350. From the overall reviews I read at the time for the AG-1350, this model was very reliable and a "workhorse" in the world of VHS. I just playback store bought tapes, so this unit was exactly what I was looking for. Found that I didn't use the Hi-Fi playback, due to buzzing and added noise occurring with some tapes, so would end up switching from Hi-Fi to normal anyway. Not having a machine with Hi-Fi sound reproduction was no issue. None of the mainstream or specialty audio/video stores carried this model, since it was mostly used for commercial applications. To my surprise, I found it at a camera and video store. They didn't have the unit on display, but took special orders for it. Back then, it was $330(Cdn) new, plus taxes. Although this VCR isn't Hi-Fi, or have VCR Plus and all the added bells & whistles the consumer models had back then, it's still a great machine with cool features, which include; One Touch Recording, Jet Search, Timer Recording, Jet Navigation, Time Stamping, Indexing & Editing. Most importantly, it will handle your tapes with respect. You just have to lightly push the tape in and it inserts smoothly, then starts playing. Due to the build quality of the outer-cabinet, it's not noisy during playback, with that constant grinding noise, like the consumer VCR models had. The picture quality is top notch and rock solid! There is a feature where you can adjust the picture playback-"Standard" crystal clear, "Dynamic"-gives the picture more contrast and a little added color, "Soft"-takes away some graininess and "Cartoon"-makes colors vibrant for animated features. This unit also has "Jet Rewind", which is the fastest rewind function that I've ever seen or heard on a VCR. It really does sound like a Jet taking off when in operation! Although the manual says it plays & records in SP & EP speeds, it also plays LP tapes excellent. Haven't played S-VHS, since I don't have any tapes recorded in this mode, but this unit has quasi playback for these tapes too. If you are looking for a basic, solidly built VCR that will present your VHS tapes in their best possible picture quality, then this unit is definitely an A1 choice.
