Good prodcut

I've owned this fixture for two months and I'm enjoying it. I use it mainly for photography, but I'm sure I could use it for video as well. I chose this it after comparing it to the DeSisti 1K RC-100 (aka red-head) and the Lowel DP on price (mainly). I'll start with some of the cons. My fixture arrived with a broken safety glass so I was reluctant to use it until the replacement arrived. I ordered the scrim and barndoors (separately) and the former can be used in place of the glass. There is a clip that holds the barndoors, scrim, and safety glass in place, but things sit in place somewhat loosely. This is no big deal for me since i don't use it overhead, but I use the included safety wire at all times. Third party accessories are virtually non-existent. So if you plan on using it softboxes you'll have to use Smith Victor gear. Chimera makes an adjustable speed ring that would work, but it costs more than the fixture. There's only a 1-stop scrim for this fixture so that saps some creative possibilities. It's a light fixture and can be mounted on everything from light duty to Century stands if desired. It's focusable so you have control of the beam spread. Add the bardoors and this thing puts the light only where you tell it. I own umbrella bracket and I use blacked out and shoot through umbrellas when I want to take some bite from it. Though it's not as powerful as most strobe units, I get decent exposures from it. Using the DXW lamp I'm able to get 1/100 sec @ f/8.0 using ISO 100 with the light 60 inches from the subject. That won't stop a speeding bullet or eclipse the sun; it works for me though. The best thing is the clean beautiful light it produces. "Yes" it's hot, but not as hot as you may think. The body gets hotter than the subjects! I own its little brother the SG-710 and together these things can make some incredible images. For me the pros just far outweigh the cons.Update: 4 August 2008Smith Victor states this fixture doesn't work with 220-240 volts. I did some research and had an electrician take a look and I took a chance. I bought an Arri P235 1000 watt globe (it runs on 230 volts) and it worked without a hitch. Since I live overseas dual voltage gear is a must. I'll be upgrading my Interfit Stellartungsten lights soon.Update: 2 September 2012I now own three of these lights and consider them the workhorses in my lighting kit. I have a 650watt fresnel and two Westcott TD-5s, but one of these comes with me on every shoot. I bought Smith Victor's speedring and can confirm that Interfit soft and strip boxes fit. I sent two of these to Smith Victor (Promark) to have the focusing mechanisms oiled for smoothness (a common occurrence with focusing flood lights). No other issues for me.

Blown-out bulb...

Thought I'd let you folks know that one of the replacement bulbs for this light is a Ushio Lighting Halogen Lamp (DXW 120V-1000WC5). Had to replace mine, but couldn't find the information online. Samy's Camera in LA had it.
