2Very disappointing
By Stephanie L. Thaw
I was very excited when I found this item as I work with over sized papers so the 18" size was very attractive. Low and behold however, you can not trim to anything larger than 9" as there is no swing out arm that extends beyond the 9" platform. The paper holder also does not lift and the finger guard is 2" so there is no way to cut anything smaller than 2.5"It is interesting to note that the 12" PERSONAL model has a swing out arm that extends the measuring and thus cutting size to 18" -- but none of the PROFESSIONAL models do. I tried to give Carl feedbak on this but the email address they provide is invalid. The Fiskars is a much better deal for the money!

4Works fine

I'm not really sure which trimmer the previous reviewer was referring to but the Carl RT-218 cuts 18". I use it to cut regular printing paper, card stock, multiple sheets and I haven't had a problem. Some of the components such as the handle on the glide blade and the edges of the trimmer feel a little cheap and plasticy but the trimmer does the job that it was intended to do with no problem. The base is made of metal and feels quite solid. I like the fact that on the base no matter what paper size you use, whether, legal, letter, 4x6 photo, etc., there are diagrams that guide you on how to line up the paper on the trimmer so that you can cut the specific size properly. The trimmer is very light and easy to store away. Though the trimmer cuts 18" vertically, I wish the base had more width horizontally. The base is only about 9" across. All and all, I'm happy with this product.I'm glad that I decided to get this trimmer despite of the negative review.

5Able to cut 1/2" slices...
By sedona artist
It's true there is no swing arm for wider paper. I would have preferred to have the extended cutting guide. But I able to achieve everything I want with this cutter. If what I'm working on is to long for the ruled board I mark my cut line with a ruler and pencil then slide it into the cutter and zip it's cut where I want it to be cut.For really thin cuts I slide the paper under the cutting bar measure from the edge of the see through cutting guide and zip the little blade cuts 1/4", 1/2" you measure it and you can cut it. This does require that you have enough paper on the opposite side of the cutter so that you can steady the paper squarely on the guide as you cut off thin strips.Yes! It's a little more work but the 18" capacity and the great price make up for the extra step for me.I also bought Carl's scoring, perforating and Victoria blades to go along with the straight blade. They all give a clean pro look and changing out the blades is literally a snap.I'm inclined to build a template that will accommodate the Carl and extend it's cutting board for wider papers.
