2Known Problem
By sbextra3
Splitter works great! There is a known problem with a leak in the tank near the tire (company admitted this and see previous reviews). The tank needs to be welded which can be a challenge to find someone local to do the warranty work. Worse yet, in my case, it leaked so quickly that the fluid ran low during the first few hour work session and the hydraulic pump seized. The welding took one day to get done. Now I wait (almost four weeks!) and Troy CAN NOT GET A REPLACEMENT PUMP. I've been told that they have NO PUMPS IN THE SYSTEM to get my equipment back up and working. Just be aware that, if you count on this as part of your business, you will be losing money waiting for the company to come through with warranty parts. NO PUMPS IN THE INVENTORY WITH NO IDEA WHEN THEY WILL BE ABLE TO GET ME ONE. Again, worked great for the few hours I used it....now it sits because the company cannot get parts for their own products that failed because of a known problem with the unit. If you purchase this unit, plan on heading to the repair shop for the weld fix right away. Otherwise, stay away until they resolve this problem.UPDATE:::After nearly 8 weeks dealing with MTD/Troy with many unreturned calls from their support staff (to both me and my repair shop), with what seemed like an unlimited supply of excuses from one particularly lazy employee, I went to the Amazon Seller(Outdoor Store). I IMMEDIATELY found success. The rep told me that one of MTD's largest distributors had 25!!!! pumps in stock and would have no problem getting me a pump. This after the rep from MTD told me and my repair shop that there were absolutely no pumps available anywhere in their supply chain and I'd have to wait until they were manufactured. The pump was shipped w/in the following couple of days and my unit repaired. When I asked the tech at MTD to help coordinate the warranty issues, he again was unresponsive to providing such support and had no answer as to why their largest distributor had 25 pumps on their shelves for nearly two months while he repeatedly told me there were no pumps to be found. Amazon(Outdoor Store) gets 5 stars. MTD/Troy would get 0 stars. The equipment still gets 2 stars because, while it works well, there's a high likelihood you'll be dealing with this issue. The reviewer that posted the great deal from Lowe's that suggested the first operator didn't put oil in the unit, I suspect, is a pump seize issue because of the leak. The MTD guy at one point told me that if I bought it at Lowe's (because they're very aware of the leak issue) I should take it back to them, they'll exchange it right away and repair and resell. I didn't purchase from Lowe's so this wasn't an option. The rep I dealt with at Outdoor Store is representative of exactly what you'd want in a customer service person and represents her company exceptionally well. The rep I dealt with at MTD, unfortunately, typifies what we've come to expect from customer service and does a great disservice to MTD/Troy and their reputation. Good Luck.

4Not as advertised
By Micheal Turgeon
Very pleased overall. But! As advertised, comes w/ 1-7/8" hitch coupler. Purchased a replacement hitch copler (for 2" ball). Wrong! Came w/ a 2" coupler, now I've got an extra. Hub caps did not fit the wheels and had to be modified by bending the inner portion of the cap so I could get them to seat. The light kit that comes with the machine has holes that do not line up with the fender mounting holes. My solution was to weld the brackets to the reservoir tank. Of course the inevitable, missing bolts required a trip to the hardware store. Two bolts missing fron the jack stand mounting plate. The engine started on the first pull, and there was a little chatter as the ram made its first trip down the beam. Then a trip to the wood pile for a test on some especially knarlly pinion pine. Split all of the test pieces only dogging the engine down on one piece and it was a really bad chunk. I'm satisfied with the machine and will make two modifications to it in the near future. 1) A whip flag on it for hauling, I can't see it behind my truck. 2) Cut the fender back on the operators side so its not a sharp shin knocker.

5Professional grade at an excellent price
By CJ
I have used a homemade splitter for years that performed admirably, considering its age. But one of the gang move to the Carolina's and so did our splitter. We needed a new one, and fast. I researched splitters for several days on the net and saw dozens of great testimonials for the Troybilt 5.5hp but none for the 8hp version. I was a little concerned over the "assembly required" note in the product description. I looked at comparable splitters from Cub Cadet, Northern Tool, etc, even some of the custom units, but I only looked at units made in the USA. All said and done, the 8 hp Troybilt looked to be the best bargain. [...] It arrived in a crate, but had some simple assembly instructions. It took about 3 hours to build the unit, and takes an extra set of hands to lift the I-beam/Ram on end to attach it to the trailer frame. Other than that I'd say that it is much easier to assemble than a gas grill. It took about $60 of hydraulic fluid (need 8 gallons, not 7 like it describes) to fill the reservoir. The Honda motor started on the first pull. We ran it through the bleed off cycles to remove the air and then tried to find a challenge for this beast. We had some relatively easy white ash lying around, but found a couple of twisted crotches to split. The 2-stage pump rammed through all the other wood, but kicks into low and crawls through the knots. It worked like a dream!! I have only split one cord with it so far, but it cycles fast, and the auto return will makes working alone much more efficient. The unit is solidly built and can be adjusted from horizontal to vertical in about 10 second with one hand. I really like that it came with a front trailer-jack and wheel assembly. Makes it easy to move around the barn. The diamond plate fenders are a nice touch. However, the proof is in the performance, and, so far, this appears to be an excellent performer and bargain. Highly recommended.
