a nice end-tab organization solution
By Ryuichi Takahashi
You can download a trial version of the software from Smead, so I won't go into too much detail; the full version works pretty much the same, except the printouts don't have "SAMPLE" over them (of course). There's a nice variety of different label brands you can choose from and you can format six different lines of text (3 front, 3 back), among other things. It's disappointing that you can't add any images of your own - that means no custom barcodes, logos, &c. Apparently, they have another product that provides more customization options and prints on forms with labels in a 6-up configuration, but it doesn't appear to be widely available. The software requires an activation (like Microsoft Office), which is a minor nuisance. What's strange, however, is that you can only print out labels by entering a code that comes in the label package. It comes with a pack of 50 labels; you enter the code, and you can print out 50 times. It gives you an additional 10 times to account for testing. I found this feature a little disturbing - I guess it's there to prevent you from using labels not made by Smead... though this is such an obscure product, I doubt any exist. I can't think of any other reason they'd do this. I just hope I never get a faulty code in a pack of labels or something; they provide a customer service number, but I'm not sure how good they are.Overall, I really like the product. I bought it for myself because my workplace uses end-tab folders, but doesn't provide labels for them. Individual labels are really expensive (and probably a pain to apply), but this allows me to just type in information from my docket and print out one pretty label I can easily slap on - it makes organizing my end-tab folders much easier.
