Outstanding for Astronomy
By Gary Wingerd
I settled on the Nikon 7x50 Prostar Binoculars after researching recommendations for astronomy use. The optics are crisp, gather a lot of light, and offer a wide view versus high magnification. Even though they are not considered high power, I have difficulty holding them still enough to prevent stars from "jiggling" around. So, I purchased the optional tripod adapter which helps a lot. I used to have Canon 18x50 binoculars with image stabilization. They did a fantastic job with the "jiggling" aspect, but the image stabilization feature sacrificed clarity more than I liked. The Nikons are much sharper in my opinion. I thought the Nikons might double as general use binoculars, but buyer beware. It is not convenient to change the distance focus as there is no center focusing wheel commonly found on binoculars. This is not an issue for astronomy since once each eyepiece is focused on infinity, you are essentially done focusing. For birding or other activities the optics would be great, but the constant adjustment of both eyepieces for different distances would get old pretty fast. They also came with tapered rubber eyepieces that shield ambient light from around your eyes. Great for night viewing. For the intended purpose of astronomy, these work quite well.
