4Not Perfect, But A Terrific Replica
By Davidp.
This diecast metal replica of the Monkeemobile is a very nice representation of one of the two original cars as it exists today. There are some inaccuracies when compared to the actual cars as seen on the Monkees T.V. series, but considering the currently restored conditions of the original vehicles, this is not totally unexpected. There were two Monkeemobiles created for the show, one of which was primarily used for promotions and traveled around the country and parts of the world. This was the vehicle upon which this model is based. When the Monkees toured Australia, the car was shipped with them, and unbelievably, it was left behind. Since the series was over by this time, apparently the studio did not care enough to track it down. Through some incredible series of events, the car ended up in Puerto Rico, where it was being used as a hotel courtesy car! It was purchased for a modest sum by a private collector who had restoration work done on it.One unfortunate consequence of this restoration is that the "guitar logos" as currently seen on the doors of the car ( and this replica ) are inaccurate, as the original logo is copyrighted, and the owner of the car would have had to pay license fees to use it. A somewhat distorted looking substitute was created, and a reversed version ( which is totally wrong ) was applied to the passenger side of the car. It depends on how much of a purist you are whether this logo is a dealbreaker or not. There are other minor inaccuracies on the model, such as the extended fenders beside the headlights being slightly shorter than those on the actual auto, but overall it is a very nice pre-built and pre-painted replica. The hardtop is removable, allowing the car to be displayed as a convertible ( as it was sometimes seen on the show ). The interior and top are molded in tan plastic, which is close to ( but perhaps slightly darker than ) the color the upholstery was during the filming of the series. Since the various restorations have been done, one of the original cars now sports a white top and upholstery, but this is not 'historically' accurate.Besides the details mentioned above, there were minor changes to the car during the two years that the show was on the air. For example, during the first season, there were thin white pinstripes down the sides of the car. These were removed for the second year when the gold "guitar logos" were applied to the doors. No individual replica can claim to be the "definitive" version of the original, but this one comes fairly close and makes a very nice display model.
